Please explain how to weatherize windows with plastic film insulation.. and why

seems to me that fall is here and winter is just around the corner today I'm going to prepare some windows at a house for the winter and I'm sure a lot of you have seen these products before but I thought I would talk about why I use these on some windows and why I really don't see a benefit in other windows so come along let's go take a look at the windows and let's install this thing so this is a type of window you're gonna want to use a kit on and this is called a slider window and these windows are not very efficient at all and let me just show you why so basically to open it it just slides open like that and you can see here is just a little piece of felt that creates the seal on the window photos that's it right that's it and you think that would be good enough but I open it you can see here you go here's that felt all right here's that phone's off my boat I just take this little piece of cardboard it slides right through there yeah so there's no pressure on there the cold air is gonna right through that it's gonna slide right through there and you know it's not gonna be very efficient so this is the window that I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna sell that plastic thing on but before we do that we kind of talked about the steps let's go take a look at another window this window it's called a cranked window not a slider window and basically you know it gets its name how it operates but it's got a crank and it opens up right what's the difference between this window and the other window well it still has felt it still has felt to create the weatherstripping right there yeah but unlike the other window it has a rubber seal actually it has two rubber seals the sort of seals a little damaged this is the exterior one but the interior one is really good and this is going to create this is gonna create a really airtight window so as I close this window here I crank it closed I can put pressure on it and I can close those rubber seals in and then of course when I lock it it creates that extra pressure on the other window that we looked at it didn't have that pressure it didn't have it so you know airs gonna see through it's gonna be much harder for air to come through this rubber seal and through the other one right because there's two so in these windows these type of windows I really don't see the benefit of adding that plastic wrap but if you do you know if you have a bad seal obviously you have to respect each window and know what's gonna be the right choice what I do notice though is these were these cranks are you can get a tremendous amount of cold air from there but even that plastic wrap is gonna be really hard to get over this crank so you kind of have to live with that alright let's go install that plastic wrap okay let's take a look I don't suspect this to be very complicated I think all the tools you're gonna need to do something like this is obviously this kit from kiko or wherever you like to buy your building supplies a hairdryer and a knife so what it comes with is just some double-sided tape and we're gonna have to go all the way around the window with some double-sided tape let's do that so all I've done is installed the double-sided tape all the way around no big deal well really easy have a real big plastic sheet but all we need to do now is a fix this plastic to the teeth so I don't know if it shows up on the camera there but you can definitely see that I had a lot of extra plastic I just have to cut it away with a razor blade nice and carefully and then we're going to shrink it with a hairdryer so that took me about ten minutes of using the blow-dryer to just tighten this up see it's nice and tight now so that's the idea behind it and it will save a ton and this window definitely needed it no doubt I hope this helps you guys decide whether or not you want to use this plastic wrap on your window and if it's even necessary like I say I only do them for the sliders anyway subscribe if you like this video
