hi everybody now I made a video a while ago about a rivet gun it was related more to my work as a window cleaner and I was just showing how we'd rather use a rivet than a self-tapping screw as you see here and a lot of people said he didn't give enough information but I wasn't actually showing how to use a rivet gun but you've given me an idea because I'm so passionate about this tool the rivet gun I wish I'd have bought one years ago because they're absolutely brilliant and I'm a really versatile this is the one I got it's not an expensive one I might get a better one actually but for now this is absolutely brilliant it's how they come like that sprung loaded as you can see got a little tool here a few rivets I've used most of them up as you can see I'll put that to one side and what I've done is I've bought a box full of rivets is loads different sizes here for different jobs big jobs small jobs tiny jobs whatever totally brilliant very cheap again I can't go wrong for that one side now what I'm going to do is show you a few examples in a minute but first let's have a look at the rivet gun spring loaded as you can see nice sturdy piece of kit you'll see you look closely here there's different holes now these are for the different sizes of rivets what you need to do before you actually try and put a rivet in is find which one the rivet you're going to use actually fits into now this is the way it goes into the rivet gun now the one I'm going to show you the example is this frying pan this is a really good example because it had rivets in originally and I'm going to fix it because the handle fell off so I've put it in the work mate here firmly I've clamped it together because it's such a fiddly job so that's setup ready for me to rivet and I've drilled out the old rivet I'll show you how to do that in a bit on a different piece of work now you'll notice that this one doesn't go into this head so what you do is you usually it'll to here undo it the spanner take that one out find out which one it fits now typically that okay it's the largest one then you just screw that into the top there compress the spring there otherwise it won't go in tighten it up with your spanner doesn't have to be that tight put the old one back in where it's held just a holder for these three might be different systems with different rivet guns that's the way it is on this one now all you do see the rivet there goes into the rivet gun this way that headpiece like that so it doesn't fall out you could hold the rivet in place while you put it into the work or you can just put the rivet into the work like that make sure it comes out underneath and it's got a long enough rivet to go through both pieces of work now this is metal to metal perhaps you can see that there now what I'm going to do put the rivet gun in place slide it on there right to the bottom grasp the rivet gun with both hands try and keep it as level as you can squeeze down don't be afraid of it most rivets will require two compressions make sure that if gun goes right down to the bottom for the second one squeeze again just one is going to require three by the looks of it then you'll hear snap all that is you can see there is the rivet shank has actually snapped off that should come away cleanly like that and you can dispose of that now let's have a look at the work take the clamp off now of course I'll be doing - not too close you can see it's nicely firmly fixed brilliant can use that again so they're throwing it away now I'd need to do the next rivet there of course it's the same procedure so I put that to one side something I can use again now right next piece of work we're going to look at again is metal to metal here much flying' a job so what you need to do because it's a much smaller rivet just test it in the hole the right size this change the head again quickly unscrew that so that one's too big now right find out which one fits the best yeah it's the middle one there don't do that a bit again squash the handle together screw that in tighten it up it's really easy put the old one back into its hold of this you don't lose it now in this example it's metal to metal again but let's say you had a total 500 car like this nice shiny piece of kit you don't want to lose it looks great in there put that there pretend that bit is this bit better exhaust slides on it's just a little bit loose but not too much so rather than use one of these self-tapping screws which I would have done originally it might work loose we're much more secure fit more permanent solution user rivet again you can either put it into the work or put it into the rivet gun we'll do it this way around slide the rivet gun into place squeeze with both hands put both hands together like that keep your thumbs out the way squeeze pull up again going to take two or three again squeeze again till you hear it snap there you go snapped perfect absolutely brilliant nice and strong now I put two in there if that was this tailpipe one at the top and one at the bottom if you can another example okay finally if you want to take a rivet out this is quite important this example will show you metal to plastic even works get a drill right size not too big correct diameter if you can whenever using power tools be careful of course safety first really into the rivet right it'll just come out usually it comes out and ends up on the shank of the drill here actually can see that careful with drills are a bit sharp sometimes I can be disposed off your rivet is just dropped out and these are two separate pieces again now once again choose a rivet the appropriate size now that's too short that one so what we're going to have to do go for another rivet there's much longer ones here that looks good see if that's long enough sometimes you won't be able to tell you might have to read drill it out this hasn't worked hmm maybe even longer so now looks a bit thin that one and that one's too fat to fit in there this one looks good see there okay let's put that one side they don't numb all over the ground they old rivet out with you can the old shank sometimes it was just fall out the back there you go put your rivet in again and see that stead simple something falling out with your finger onto the work firmly grasp both hands what you don't trap your fingers on this piece here squeeze together same thing and it snaps again job done brilliant so if you want a rivet gun there's nothing like it it's my favorite tool in fact I couldn't be without this do you want to buy these just go to the link at the bottom of this site bottom of this video do yourself a favor get one of these job done
