Please explain how to plumb with no leaks

hello this is rick patterson with the handyman toolbox talking to you today about how to replace hardware in the shower okay the first thing you're going to need to do is to pick out the hardware that's going to be replaced and what i've done here is let's see if you can get a good picture of this what i've done here is just gotten a pegasus luxury and pan and it's the tub and shower set and i got this at the local hardware store just pick up whatever brand you want whatever colors and finishes that you want to be replaced and go ahead and do that the items you're going to need for this job are a pair of pliers crescent wrench straight edge screwdriver phillips screwdriver joint compound plumber's putty teflon tape and clear or white silicone what we're going to do here is remove the tailpiece coming out of the wall so i'm going to go ahead and do what i need to do here in order for that to happen now this particular connection is soldered on and it's safe to disconnect there's a lot of corrosion inside here and so we're going to take a little bit a second just to disconnect this from the wall i'm gonna do here just take this now of course i have to go counterclockwise so i've got a tool here that will actually open up like so and it'll bear down on this so you have to be very slow and deliberate when you make this disconnection don't force anything so i've got that disconnected right there now i can just remove this by hand and there you have it i'm going to show you a shot what it looks like on the inside here now as you can tell that's my connection there and so i'm going to go ahead and put the new piece on here and then connect everything out since i have taken out the whole section of the tail pot plus the shower head what i'm going to do is go ahead and assemble all everything and then just put up the tail piece into the wall so i don't have to do all the work up in the air okay so what i've done here is i've already applied the teflon tape and the compound on this end so i'm going to do the same thing here i'm going to show you how to do this i always apply both and what i do here is just take it like so and run it into the threads get off any of the excess that i don't need then i take the teflon tape now what i do with the teflon tape is i look at what's going on right here with the tape and i know facing me i'm going to go clockwise around just like so and just run this tape and i kind of pull a little bit as i'm applying this and then when i get finished i just pull it real tight and so it snaps now i'm ready to put the head on what i've done is a good idea before you even start this to go ahead and put the flashing up against or on the unit as well put it at the end that's going to go in the wall so i start there and now what i do is just turn this either way i can turn both or either one and i just keep turning until it's tight and then just to set it i'll take the crescent wrench open it up what i'll do there is just open it up take it and turn it a few times until it's completely tight then we're ready to go what i did earlier was go ahead and put some joint compound inside where the threads will be received and this is just to ensure that it does not leak and the reason i use both compound and tape i don't have any leaks whatsoever and so i prefer to use it this way some people say it's overkill you don't need it but in my head the worst thing i can have the water leak i just don't want one so what i do here i have to be very patient and get it in there correctly and once everything's threaded and starts like so i'll just do this by hand you don't want to overdo it and break the solder joint well that looks pretty good right there now once i'm finished then i can just push the cover back on and then i'm complete this has been rick patterson with the handyman toolbox thanks for listening you
