hey guys it's Jamie Rae with Jamie Rae vintage hair I am live on Facebook to talk to you guys about my most recent upcoming project I don't know what I got going on I'm working with a DI in Riverton for their grand opening with the clash of the DIY toons I don't know if you guys have heard me say a few things about that but I wanted to introduce my piece and show you what I'm gonna be working on and also tell you a little bit more about what we're doing so it's me Brooke from starting at home Sasha from sweet pickins we're all going head-to-head in the clash of the DIY toons and what that is is we each picked a piece of furniture @di I got this armoire it was $60 solid with sorry the door is like a little janky we need to fix it but it's amazing and then Sasha and Brooke also picked up their pieces at di and that we're each doing live videos showing you how we're flipping them and then next week October 26 through the 28th you can come into the Riverton di location in Riverton Utah and you can vote for your favorites so if you're local to Utah and you're in the area I really need you to go and vote for my piece because that way my charity will get the most money my charity is that my charity is the Shriners Hospital of Utah so whoever gets the most votes gets the most money for their journeys also it will be going up for auction so if you watch what I'm doing and you love this piece and you want to take it home go do the silent auction and you have an opportunity to get the winning bid to win my piece as well as the piece from Sasha and the piece from Brooks that's filming are there any questions or anything I can't see questions but I did mess with the lighting for a second ruined it but it's better now good job Sam all right anyways I want to show you kind of go over what I'm gonna do with the piece far as the paint job I'm probably gonna do like a really boho chippy kind of finish with a dark place one of the new finishes that I'm doing I think would look amazing with all this flat surface to really get in there I'm thinking that I'm probably gonna call it my girl Dion she's kind of like my ace in my back pocket and get some invites from her and ask her what she would do on this piece because she's the one that kind of taught me how to do that drippy chippy boho finish but it's got so can you come close it's got like this flower detail here it's kind of I don't know what would you say ugly I don't know some people might like it it's not my favorite so I've got one of our jrv application you can pick up on our website and I'm just gonna cover that completely up so I have no idea what I'm painting on this but I do know that that has to go dub is that centered yep pretty good surprise it's jacking on that video okay Jack I do I will be there in a minute don't make a mess of Liza's room I gotta finish doing this live video okay okay so I'm using e6000 that's how I apply all my applications I went around the edge did it nice and liberally can you tell I've been painting with these hands I get asked all the time vertical surfaces you could just plan your application or you can lay your piece flat and put something heavy on it this piece is a piece so I had no anyone a lay it flat but these are holding it here in place in about two hours it will be dry and then next week I'm going to be live on my Facebook page showing you how I finish this piece and if you have any questions about the clash of the DIY tens or Desura industries in riverton comment below since I couldn't answer any questions live I will be responding to everybody and don't forget October 26 through 28 stop by the Riverton di and vote for my piece bye guys I am finally getting started on my plush the DIY tens piece if you watched me the other day saw that we glued on this applique but I have done nothing else it's Monday night and it needs to be delivered to the Riverton DI on Wednesday night so I figured I'd probably better get started and wanted to show you what I'm working on first off this is like if you're gonna bid on a piece and you want to bid on like the heaviest dirtiest piece this is it it's a serious beast let's see oh hey Sasha Sasha from sweet Pickens is one of my competitors and the clash of the DIY tunes so follow her Paige sweet pickings on Facebook also from start at home I can't talk Brooke from start at home and Burke is already done so Brooke is already done no Sasha Sasha how far are you on your piece I know I saw you mixing paint so you probably already got your base coat on I have like nothing done so I felt like I needed to get started in case you're wondering what this is it's me Sasha and Brooke all bought pieces that di we're going to be refurbishing them and flipping them and then bring them to the Riverton sorry it's late the Riverton DI grand opening which is October 26 through 28 where if you're local to Utah you can come vote for your favorite piece which is gonna be mine and put your bid in for the silent auction there'll be a first second and third prize as well as the silent auction money everything goes to charity my charity is this Shriners Hospital of Utah let's see Sasha says I love fourth baby lots to do good I'm glad I'm not the other one and my sister Lamar says she's excited did you see me get started well I don't really have a plan other than I do know I want to do a bow hold finish and I'm praying that when I go to the shop tomorrow there's some mint chip at the shop because I really want to accent with mint chip and you see that piece right there I listed it it's already sold I used the last of my mint chip on that piece so if there's no mint chip in the shop I'm going to have to figure out what else to do so I'm getting started I'm using two colors for my base coat I got oh thanks Bill on the rug okay I've got DIY blue Bohemia and DIY hey sailor so blue Bohemia I don't know if you can even see this it's kind of like a rich bohemian blue and then hey sailors like a bright Navy if you're familiar with very choc mother I would say hey say is pretty close to starry night like my dining chairs but not quite as bright so I'm gonna get started I'm down here don't worry I didn't yeah I'm gonna just brush this on here I'm just gonna do a door for you you can see that there's a little bit of another color on here and that's okay I've cleaned my piece really well and they gave it a light but because it was pretty sand like shiny and I'm gonna go ahead and do all the edges with the blue Bohemia and yes I'm leaving this hardware on I'm gonna be doing a wet distress and bringing back the metal but yes I'm leaving and now I'm not taking the doors off the hinges sorry Sasha when you're doing this boho finish you really want to leave sorry I'm down here you really want to leave the doors on and the drawers in so when you do the drippy part it's an organic drip this is just the base coat I'm gonna let the base coat dry completely before I start layering on more colors okay so the base coat is on of the blue Bohemia I'm gonna switch over to my hey sailor I'm using DIY paint that you can buy on my website I don't know if you can even see the difference between these two colors but there is a difference anyways I'm this DIY paint is all natural no BOC it's made with nine ingredients and it's a clay based paint so it's heavily pigmented which makes it really good for the technique I'm doing because there's a lots and lots of color in it very saturated paint if you're interested in buying these colors go to Jamie or a vintage calm and there's a bunch of awesome DIY paint I also carry stock shows paint she has sweet pickin and very chocolate so one place you can buy lots of paint alright getting this on here so what I'm gonna do to this whole piece is I'm going to be taking the outside and I'm gonna paint it with blue Bohemia and the inside is getting painted with hey Cellular and I'm just painting the outside okay yeah you could kind of see that how it's the different shades I'm just painting the outside the inside of this hutch is not getting painted at all because I'm doing like this really drippy finish so to paint the inside would be kind of a pain in the butt plus it's kind of a utilitarian useful like inside I'll show you it's got a big shelf and you can hang clothes and then I have these two cubbies here so you could put baskets in it so this is really just to use kind of like a wardrobe or whatever so I'm not going to be finishing inside just the outsides of nice and pretty so this is a base coat there's going to be paint over the top of this so don't be scared but I wanted to add some kissing booth and I'm hoping that when I layer some stuff I'll get some pretty purple colors and I'm just taking kissing booth and I'm just adding that to the details and then when I put my other coats on there and I spray my water this will come through so I'm just this is not something I usually do I usually stick to like very safe beachy two or three colors but I want this piece to have a lot of depth so I'm adding this kissing this which is like this really pretty reddish pink this armoire is giant and I painted this entire armoire I did a base coat with bohemian blue and the hey sailor and I used about a third of a quart of paint to get the whole base coat down so it really doesn't take much my favorite colors i buy imports and I swear they last forever and then my accent colors I buy in samples and I can do a lot of pieces with them so when I start layering on my other colors tomorrow when I do the drippy finish I'll probably take and make a blended color I'll probably take this boho blue and the kissing booth and make a purple and that's the color I'm going to come in and highlight and make all trippy and then it'll blend most alright I'm gonna come down here hopefully you guys can you still see me well my other screen okay I'm just coming through and highlighting this the funny thing is I have my glasses off so that way they don't glare in the camera and I can't see super good without my glasses so painting without my glasses it's more like I'm feeling the pain as opposed seeing it okay I'm gonna keep adding this kissing booth on here and then tomorrow when I go live we're going to be adding all the highlight colors hopefully hopefully mint chip if I have some and then I'm thinking because I'm going really dramatic with the colors that I'm going to do white wax to tone it down last time I left you I didn't have the coral added but if you follow me on social media I added a cowgirl coral I'm here and I'm gonna bring you to this side here oops sorry you can kind of see what is going on here it's kind of like a jerky finish and it's kind of wild I know that that may not be for everybody but don't worry so let me show you how I achieved this look it involves using a squirt bottle and I'm using sea glass and mint chip I did have some at the shop so I'm gonna go ahead and show you how I did that on here and then yeah and then once that's dry the very next step is going to be to sand it after it dries I'm going to sand it and then it's gonna get a white wax so don't worry it's not gonna be at I mean it's gonna be crazy because I want it to be boho crazy but it's not gonna be as crazy as it looks right now once it dries and gets the white wax so let me hit the DIY C gloss and before I paint on there I want to kind of reactivate the panes at underneath thanks John for putting that up there I'm gonna reactivate this paint that's underneath so nice thing about the clay based paint that I use is if I get it wet it'll reactivate it and then I can mix my colors I like doing a base coat instead of painting all the colors at once so that way I have just not a big blur it gives it a little bit of structure come on water bottle I just need to squirt right it's wet all right iliza curricula okay so I'm using my DIY paint that you can get at Jamie Rae vintage calm hi Patricia and I'm using sea glass and so sea glass is kind of my picture frame colors what I'm going to call it and it's going to picture frame my piece so it's gonna go around the edge and the midship is gonna be the inside of my picture the nice thing about it already being wet is it just kind of blends it together while I'm painting all right li but can you put that on my chair yeah I'm just gonna do this little area so you can see how it goes together I know it looks kind of like a big goopy mess and it kind of is but that's the fun it's fun to paint like this picture frame color is done and I've got this DIY paint and mint chip this is the one I was hoping that my shop had and I did I've got one more sample of it in case you need some it's at Molly's in Lehi or you can buy it online look at this paint look at the color it's like the viscosity and it's just thick and creamy and heavily pigmented it's great stuff it's perfect for the finish that I'm doing alright so now that I've painted everything in C gloss I'm coming in with a mint chip and painting the inside of this piece so I'm painting in the picture frame that's kind of the biggest way - the best way to describe it is that you're gonna cut colors that go outside the picture frame and colors that go inside the picture frame so we've got a little bit of the inside here and you got a kind of a ladder to get it on these applicants because they're sick I'm gonna even out my brush strokes and I can see some of the colors are blending from underneath which is exactly what I want hey now that I've done that I'm gonna come through with my squirt bottle this one's seen better days it's just water you can put vinegar in your water if you want it to separate and get crackling but I didn't want to this piece was pretty shiny so I was worried if I did too much vinegar that it would separate too much so alright so a squirt bottle and I do it in sections so that way it doesn't dry too much and so it's not all exactly the same you don't want it to look uniform oh you know what let me get this see glass if your girls or any of anybody in your families into boho or unicorns this is like the boho unicorn finish lots of colors how to reminds me of like I don't know bright Mexican blanket or cotton candy this mint chip totally reminds me of cotton candy I love it son this hosing it down and you can use the water to really get a direction like if I want the tape to move that way on my piece I must work at that angle and if you have one that you can adjust the nozzle that's cool too but there's only one is what I'm fine all right I'm gonna bring in and this cool thing is it kind of takes it back down in a few spots to the wood underneath okay you guys want to see an up-close picture of this all right we're coming in so here it is now when it's it's on the tripod so it's kinda hard to move when it's dry it's not gonna be this glassy it's like a real matte finish and then I'll sand it all with my orbital sander and then seal it and then when I seal it it's gonna get a little bit glossy again but not quite as glossy as that but before I seal I'm gonna use the white wax over the whole piece and I'm thinking I don't know if I will or not but I'm thinking that I'm gonna use possibly I'm gonna spray it down with like watered-down white paint because I love the bright colors but I kind of want to make it look like muted and aged and not quite so much like whoa unicorn just threw up on it so I'm not tone it down a little bit I don't know if you can tell but on this side over here there's a lot more white going on okay so I've got my water down white DIY paint in here I used white swan' and I'm just gonna come through while this is still a little bit less and sprayed you this white paint oh this is just gonna give me a whitewashed effect I know you're like Jamie you just got that perfect and now you're painting again spraying don't worry you'll see in the end I'm a little scared but I'm pretending not to be okay okay so I'm actually gonna light this other side down to fit after you spray them with white then you come back through with the water you kind of got to spray it fast you're just trying it generally so it's not like so bright carnival I could have just brushed a whitewash on but this is a lot faster to shake it and now I'm gonna go run real fast and put want regular water in here to hose this down I'm back I just have water in this so now that I've hosed the whole thing down with my water down white paint ideally you'd have two water bottles but finding two water bottles around here is not easy hold on let me get the white out so there's still a little bit of white in the hose okay so now I'm just blending the white washed spray down water and you're coming from the top and working my way down all right I was gonna hold the camera well can you talk to people see if there's any comments or questions yeah doesn't look like any questions mostly just comments people are excited to see how it's going and how it's gonna turn out I'm not scared I'm not scared yep you got me I'm not scared just a little bit I do recommend if you're doing in the house my drop cloths that I have underneath this has like a plastic back underneath it and that keeps the water from soaking through the drop cloth to the rug and I have a rug and then I have my carpet underneath and my white rug is kind of colored now so it's alright it's gonna be a boho right here pretty soon because all the pain that I got and it's okay if you still have a little bit of a splattered effect cuz that's just cool alright so do you want to talk to them I'm escorting sure want me to say how much this thing weighs and how excited I am to have to move it sorry I would stop and talk to you guys but this is kind of time something she doesn't like to talk when she's paint she gets all breathy cuz she gets so into it it's like a full workout some people do cardio I do the squirt bottle it works pretty good I can move heavy furniture you can also like if you don't think that some things too like splattery she's your finger you can finger paint if you want to I didn't know you were gonna put white on there I thought I was just gonna be like this bright blue it's definitely evolved since I went outside it's a couple things well and then when it's all done I might even do white wax I was gonna do just white wax when I was like oh then I could do a whitewash and then I was like damn that's gonna take forever so then I came up with this so we'll see you I'm gonna sand it before I decide if I put wax on it I'm trying to like lighten it a little because my whole design thing right now hold on I got a sport that is boho farmhouse so I kind of wanted it washed out so it's kind of a farmhouse but the kind of boho same time anyway so we're gonna let this dry we're ready to sand I may be out of breath just unloaded this beast out of the house it is so heavy I'm dying but I'm just using my orbital sander with 220 sandpaper and I'm just gonna go over it and smooth it out as well as take some paint off the edges just kind of wanted to show you what that looks like it's gonna get loud okay so I'm going to that's a whole thing and then Zeb's gonna seal it and then I'll decide whether I'm going to do white wax or black wax and then for the most part it's gonna be done we're gonna be putting a new back on the back and maybe some new tops thanks for watching so the last thing I'm gonna do is I've already sealed this and I get asked this a lot why do I seal and then locks and sometimes I wax and then I seal I've sealed it with poly acrylic but and I don't want like a really dirty wax I just wanted to go like down into the cracks so if I feel it first it allows it me to manipulate it easier without getting it into the actual colors on my paint if that makes sense because clay and chalk based paint and even milk paint they're really absorbent so if you put black wax directly on that paint you're gonna get kind of a smear a dirty effect which is fine if that's what you want but I want more of a clean more managed glaze or not glaze on black wax and this is the DIY black wax you can pick it up on my website Jamie rate vintage calm and I'm just gonna black wax really I wanna black wax this applique because it won't show up is not well without it so I'm just making sure I'm getting it down in all the cracks I'm using my stubby wax brush it's a good way to get it down in there okay once I've got that on I'm using a damp rag and they're just coming in and taking off the excess wax it's already been sealed so it's not gonna take any of the paint off when I do this it's just gonna take off that excess black wax I don't want any lines to show like where the black box ends so I'm just smearing about all right you can definitely see that that black wax brings out the detail of this applique so if you want to see the full project finished have to come to the Riverton di I will be sharing photos of this after the event but if you're local to Utah come and see me hopefully if the weather cooperates I'll be doing a live paint demonstration too I will be there tomorrow Sasha will be there on Friday and then Sasha and I will both be there Saturday at 1 o'clock when they announce the lair there
