okay people let's build a roof I think it looks just so it's coming along pretty good we obviously changed the pitch of the roof so we had to get all new rafters which was kind of a pain in the butt but it was kind of the only choice we had I was trying to figure out if we could use our old rafters and they were too short and like if we use them they would maybe make it right from the corner plate to the top no overhang plus there's the ugly notch out of it so I didn't want to use those I wanted a sturdy solid roof so let's go up and take a look at how I did it all alrighty so is it it's pretty sweet you can actually stand up up here which is nice I'll be yeah just perfect so anyways what I did got my logs up high enough just a few high I didn't want to start having this thing get out of proportion because the walls here are already pretty tall and it started starts to look kind of silly so anyways you just want a few high and I spent a good couple days just getting these two double top plates around the whole thing just to make it square and as level as I could so that would give me a solid base to work off of so I could have solid rafters and have them all cut the same and have them work so the problem with the old cabin is we didn't use a dimensional lumber ridge beam we used the log and we had to custom cut every single rafter and it was a pain in the butt and it did not work well so I spent a lot of time just making this top these top plates so we'd figure out one rafter what you can see there's my template right there I just that was the last one I just stuck in figured out my top what I wanted to do was figure out how I could do this all mathematically with line lengths and all that because I just finished my third year carpentry so like I know how to layout rafters and do it all by the math but the thing is I didn't have a total rise to work off of you know I didn't know that I had my span but like I said the rise total rise was my preference you know I got a these are a ten-foot rafters here we're gonna have a projection coming off of this that's why the overhang is so small but it was pretty much just a matter of holding it up and figuring out what I thought looked best and what would give me the most amount of room you know to get a door in the front here and be able to stand up up here so yeah I know it worked out pretty well we just like I said laid out one the bird's mouth cut at the top I just laminated two-ply 2x6 all the way across and then we notched the top pretty cool I've never done that before but it worked out well and it's nice because it's just another kind of piece that helps hold this thing together that extra little notch which is and it looked pretty sweet as well so just some temporary bracing at the back here just you know keeping this thing from rocking back and forth at the back here as you can see my rafters are coming out past the end so what I did I mean look out that's what it's called anyways so all I did here was not a couple two by fours into my last two rafters so I have a projection coming out the end and it's still all supported temporarily I put this cross brace just to hold this whole end solid you know as it it's a triangle right nice and strong right now so I'm gonna eventually take that out but won't do that and tell i frame this end gable here which will give it that support um but yeah that's pretty much it so far looks pretty awesome pretty stellar view it's gonna be sweet just got my first little role sheathing on the bottom here just to again help give me some rockin support keep this whole ridge from going back and forth so that's pretty much all I've got to say for now I'm just gonna keep working away the next two days I'm gonna be up here pretty much all day so I'll have a lot done for you guys hopefully another video beginning you next week so yeah thanks for watching let me know what you think and I will see you in my next video see you later
