this week's tutorial is how to make a kid's beach towel pull over the first step is obviously to buy a towel my favorite towels are at Target their room essentials line is just a solid towel it doesn't have it's all terrycloth it doesn't have any border at the bottom so if you want to use it to applique it's perfect the first thing to do is to find the center of the towel and I like to use a CD for my template it's the perfect size neck hole for a toddler or even younger so find the center point and trace all the way around and then you're going to and then you're going to cut out this hole after you cut the neck hole in the towel you need to cut the ribbing for the neck band so I think two and a half inches is the perfect height because you're going to fold it in half so it will only really be half that tall so I cut two and a half inches of cotton ribbing I do cotton because the towel is made of cotton if you had something polyester or whatever you just want to match the fiber content so cotton towel ring then you cut you need a piece about 12 inches long you want it to be pretty snug over their head so that it's not falling off once they have it on and a good idea I know this works for my son's head but if you don't just cut a piece sew it together and then try it on make sure it fits snugly over their head so now I have a piece that's two and a half inches wide by 12 inches long now I'm going to sew this these two well the strip of ribbing into a tube right sides together backs it at the beginning and at the end okay so now what you have is a tube and you're going to fold it open up the seam and then fold it in half so the raw edges match up now we need to divide this neck band into into four peep into quarters so right where the seam is put your first pin and then folding it right on the seam line you're going to this opposite end will be one of your marks I like to clip I like to use clips to mark so just if you're going to clip make just a very shallow clip into the raw edge you can mark with pins or however you like so now I'm going to match up that little clip I made with this seam and I'm going to clip these other two edges okay so now I have four marks dividing this piece into fourths so we're going to do the same thing on the towel that we just did on the ribbing to mark this neck hole into quarters so I folded the towel in half so I know these are two halfway points again clip really shallow on both sides and I'm going to fold the towel again the opposite way right here the next step will be to match up the clips on the towel with the clips on the ribbing so choose what's going to be the back I'm going to do mine so the tag is in the back so this is the back this is the front I'm going to put the seam of my ribbing in the back of the towel so I'm going to line up my seam with this back clip pin then I'm just going to go around matching up the clips in the towel with the clips in the ribbing okay so I've pinned now I just need to surge or so please do together or do you want to surge with the towel on the bottom and if you need to pin more that's fine I my first few I pinned a ton and I found that it was just more trouble because you have to stretch as you sew so I think it's easier to not have a bunch of pins in there so you just start going and stretch it all the way stretch the ribbing out all the way as you go get to the beginning keep stretching and then just tie a knot so I've surged the two layers together and now I just want to go around the inside since the towel was on the bottom and make sure that the towel got caught in this in the surging and on the outside it just looks like a t-shirt it should be stretchy enough to fit over your child's head and you'll keep it tight around their neck and on their shoulders and that is how you make a beach towel pullover
