Please explain how to graft pecan trees

>> Lenny Wells: Make sure these
flaps are covering the cambium. Pull these and pass them around. >> Narrator: Pecan grafting is
the art of producing a tree of a specific variety by grafting or
joining the buds or shoots from a particular tree into
a seedling rootstock. University of Georgia Extension
pecan specialist Lenny Wells will show you how this is done. >> Wells: The first time
you try it... >> Narrator: Necessary materials
for four-layered or banana grafting
technique include: Rootstock Scion or graft wood A knife Hair bands or rubber bands Wrapping tape Film-like material First, cut several inches from
the top along with any excess vegetation growing
from the rootstock. >> Wells: Start out making that
cut there, just kind of cut the top of it off. >> Narrator: Next, cut an X on top
at the wood stock - not too deep but make sure you go
down into the bark. Next, wrap hair bands around
the wood stock just below where the cutting takes place. Then peel back the cut
part of the wood. >> Wells: And where you
made those cuts, just kind of divide
it into sections. >> Narrator: Cut the exposed piece
of wood out of the peeled layers >> Wells: When you
make that cut, you want to be fairly
flat and even. >> Narrator: Take the scion
wood and make several cuts to expose
the cambium. >> Wells: Just make
your cuts on there. Most of the time... >> Narrator: Insert the scion
into the wood and make sure the flaps are
covering the cambium. Then pull up the rubber
bands to hold it together. Use wrapping tape to get
the wood stock good and tight around the cambium
of the scion. Use a film-like material
to cover the tape as an extra protection
for the scion. It's important to note best
results from grafting are done with moisture
in the air. This will allow the wood stock
not to be in danger drying out. Also you will be able to see
if your grafting technique worked in 10 days to two weeks. © 2015 University of Georgia College of Agricultural and
