I'm Teresa Coates from Shannon fabrics and I'm here at the fat quarter shop studios and today we're gonna be talking about how to make a strip quilt so the first thing we're gonna need is our cuddle kit this is one for a Fab five strip quilt which you can find the back of all of our kits you'll see what the finished kit can look like as well as the backing fabric that's needed and the size that it will make you can tell the difference between whether the kit comes with a backing fabric or not by looking for this if it has a backing fabric it'll just have one fabric shown if you need to find yourself one you'll see the three different varieties that are available also to tell you all the sort of notions and some quick tips on working with it so we'll have the kit and the other things we need we need to make sure that we have some 5:05 spray to do the spray basting for it which works really really well with the fabric because it's a knit fabric it's gonna want to move and curl on you so we use the 5:05 spray to keep it in check while we're sewing with it okay you're also going to need to get yourself some sort of batting to use in the middle of the quilt you can use just a cotton fabric just a muslin or you can use batting so we recommend that you use the finis paddy you can find you can use a cotton or you can use a polyester both work really well the polyester will be lighter weight and especially good for larger quilts you'll also want a scrap piece of paper this is just a piece of wax paper you can use parchment you can use scrap paper that you have around your house newsprint all sorts of things we're just gonna be using this to protect our fabric from the spray you also wanna make sure that you have a stiletto to be able to pull the fibers out when we for the binding and you'll use wonder clips and then I recommend the long clover flower head pins so the first thing we're gonna do is we're gonna lay our bat backing fabric out on the table we need to have it nice and flat so you need to work on a surface that's large enough that you can lay your entire quilt out flat so we're gonna lay it out and we're to put our batting piece over it we cut the batting just around the same size as the backing doesn't matter if it matches perfectly because we're just gonna trim it up later and make it even okay so what we're gonna do is we're to lay out the backing we're gonna put our batting over the top of it and we're gonna spray it with the spray just a nice light spray across it and then we're gonna push it up and I like to push it from underneath and push it up and over and get it nice and flat okay and I press it along here get it to stick really really well this is an important part because we're gonna be working with this piece the batting and backing together as one piece for the rest of the quilt okay so we get the backing entirely attached to the batting and then we're gonna do our center strip okay so we folded our batting and backing together so that there it's in half I have a nice fold and then I'm gonna take this is my first piece my center strip and we always start in the center and work out and I'm gonna fold this in half and I'm gonna put it on here and I'm gonna match these folds approximately one of the great things about working with the cuddle fabric is that it is pretty easygoing so while it can be it needs a lot of pins and I'm not a lot of attention it also is very forgiving so if I don't have this perfectly in the center it's gonna work out just fine okay so we're gonna get this in the center here's my folds are matching up okay and I can see that they're matching I'm going to fold I'm going to hold through all three layers and I'm gonna take this and make it open up and my strip is gonna stay basically in the middle okay so I get that all nice and flat I'm gonna fold this over here I'm going to spray the back of that bring it over get it to stick down I'll do the same thing with the other side get this to lay in the middle and then I'm gonna start putting my strips on so once we've got the strip on the winter layer the next strip and this is when we finally start sewing we're going to put this strip down and I'm gonna pin it in the center and on the edges and then I'm going to pin it in between and we're gonna use a lot of pins for this to keep it in check because it's a knit fabric like I said it kind of wants to creep and we need to keep it where we want it okay so we're gonna pin it and I pin all the way across here right next to each other and then I come back along here and I pin again and all this pinning will save it from moving around and you having to redo anything okay so once we've got this pin the entire way across I'm going to take it to my sewing machine and I'm gonna use my walking foot and a stretch 90/14 needle and I'm gonna stitch all the way across here I just use the edge of my walking foot to do as the guideline for it I don't yet necessarily need to backstitch on either side if you can if you want to stitch all the way with a 3.5 or larger stitch length okay stitch across here as you're going you're gonna take these pins out and you're gonna leave these pins and to hold it in place so it doesn't move on you so once we've sewn all the way across here we got this down I'm going to make sure that it's caught the entire way and that all both layers of my fabric are caught and then I'm gonna take my extra paper and I'm gonna slide it underneath this so that I can spray it and not over spray onto my other fabric so then I'm just gonna spray the back of this and push it up and I push it from underneath just like I did the batting to get it nice and flat you're gonna kind of push it up and out so that it's nice and flat and stuck you can see that it will want to curl if it isn't spray basin that's why we do that once it's been spray basted it's nice and flat you're gonna do the same thing over and over again keep adding the rows until you get all the way to the end okay once you've got all of your strips sewn on you're then gonna square it up with just a rotary cutter make it nice and neat and then I like to stitch just right across the end to hold that in place really well before I do the binding so the binding fabric is a luxe cuddle fabric and it'll come in your kit and a ten inch strip and you're just gonna cut that down into one and three-quarter inch strips we're gonna cut that you're gonna put them together if you need to lengthen them which you will it'll be a 60 inch strip and you'll need to add at least two or three of them together to make the binding for your quilt you'll do that same as you would just for a patchwork quilt where you're gonna put them right sides together pin it and then you'll stitch it and bring it like this you'll have a large a large binding strip to be able to go all the way around your quilt okay so we're gonna do this where we we stitch it to the back and then bring it around to the front you're welcome to stitch it to the front and bring it around to the back the reason I do it this way is because I can hide the stitches a little bit better if they on the front and I can see what I'm doing but you're welcome to choose either way either way so what I do is I put my use my winter clips and I put the binding on here I like to start between two wonder Clips where it'll hold the fabric down a little bit I slide it under my walking foot again and I stitch all the way across here using the edge of my walking foot as the guide as well okay so I'm in a stitch all the way over here removing the wonder clips as I go and once I get to this corner I'm going to stop here and stitch right off the corner that'll make it so that this will flip up really nice and easily okay so I'm gonna take this I'm gonna bring it up and I'm gonna hold my fingers here and bring it back down hey the one thing I need to make sure that it does is this fold needs to end right before the raw edge of that fabric okay and that'll keep it so that you have a nice tight corner and then I'm just gonna pin it down right here I'm gonna winter clip again and keep on sewing so once I've sewn this all the way around I've left myself a couple of good long tails I'm gonna finish up that binding okay and the way I do this is a little bit of a cheater method that's only gonna work on cuddle fabrics and it's only because it's a little bit stretchy that it works really well so I'm gonna bend this up and I'm gonna bend this one down in the direction that I want them to go when it's finished okay and I leave a little gap in here because it's stretchy it'll pull that nice and tight when I'm done if I pull this tight now put it here when I stitch it it's gonna be too loose and it's not gonna fit my quilt so I leave it just a little bit of a gap I hold it down real tight and I stick my pin through the folds okay and then it's about where I want it to be sewn but I'm going to bring it over here flatten it out again get it nice and neat perfect it a little bit and then I put the pins in just to the side of the seam lines just one either side and then I'm going to stitch it from this corner to this corner back stitching on either one and then I trim that trim that extra off okay then once we've done that we're going to bring it back down here stitch it down all the way around once it's stitched on we have our approximate half inch seam allowance on the front here and we're just going to bring the binding from the back here where we've sewn it bring it around to the front and wonder clip that down the Wonder Clips work really well to hold it in place just enough while we're stitching it I wonder clip eight about every four to five inches just enough to keep it in check and I do it just a little bit at a time and then I move my clips along to the next section once I've wonder clip this one side down I'm gonna stitch it with a zigzag so we're just gonna stitch right along this edge and I've used a five whip come on a five width and a five length for my zigzag we just want that to come right along the edge of that luxe cuddle binding can you take my clips off as I go and it's gonna hide all of that those fibers in the zig zag once we are finished so we're gonna stitch all the way to the end here then I'm going to take it out of the machine fold it again and wonder clip one more time okay we've got can you see that so we've just folded that corner over it doesn't matter how nice your mitre is because we're not even going to be able to see it because it's hidden all among the fluff which is great so I'm going to pin it down so I can get it to go back under the foot where I want it to be and I'm gonna take that pin out before I start sewing okay ready so I've just zigzag right along this edge with a nice long wide zigzag and they're going to come back in with my little stiletto bring up the luck scuttle to sort of hide those stitches and then we're done you can find lots of kids a fat quarter shop comm make sure you check out our other videos
