Please explain how to make a moss hanging garden basket with lisa

hi I'm Lisa Vaquero I'm the production manager here at Rogers Gardens and I wanted to introduce you to Anna she's one of her production team members hi and what we're going to do today and show you is how to Moss and plant one of our world-famous as we say moss baskets through the years the nursery industry has seen a lot of changes and bee plants that people are using to do container gardening with one thing that is constant through the years is that our Moss basket hasn't changed it still is a favorite of everyone out there and we are going to show you how to build one of those right now some of the ingredients you will need in order to create your Moss basket is Spagna Moss we sell our Moss and 5 pound bales you'll also need a wire basket the basket of choice that we're using today is around but we also have many different styles we have window boxes we have shallows we have wall pockets next thing you're going to need of course is the flowers and we'll go over the flowers that we've chosen as we show you how to plant it but we have a really nice selection here that is just going to make this basket come to life you'll also need the wire hanger in order to hang your basket in order to start your Moss basket you need to take your Spagna Moss and immerse it completely in water so what we have is a big tub that we filled with water and the sphagnum Moss you want to saturate it completely just like a sponge but you also want to wring it out completely like a sponge so you don't have dripping water when you start to Moss your basket so what Ana's going to do is she's going to start losting the basket she's starting from the bottom and she's just putting a nice layer I'd probably say about an inch thick of Moss you want to make sure you have enough Moss so when we fill it with soil the soil doesn't come out of it but you don't want to have it so filled with Moss that you know your whole basket is Moss and you have no room for the so it's a little bit of a technique that again as I say she's perfected over the years but with some time you guys can perfected also so she's taking a big clump of the moss she's pushing it on the side so everything is becoming kind of flush with the wire itself and you almost can't see the wire but again in thickness as you can see it's about an inch thick maybe a half an inch thick most important again is to have a very nice thick coating as an is Moss in the basket she's taking special care to kind of overlap her patches of moss so one layer will go down and when she places the next layer over here it'll kind of overlap this one a little bit to ensure that there's a clean coating and an even thickness throughout the whole basket she does start again from the bottom of the basket and works her way up to the top of the basket Anna has completed lossing of her basket up to the very brim it takes a little bit different technique to Moss the top of the basket or the rim part which is this part right here so the very top from the top piece of wire to the next piece down so she's taking the mosque she's starting to push it into the rim so it kind of creates a lip around the very top of it this will secure the moss and at the very top and will secure it through the rest of the basket where is mossing the rest of the basket she used big pieces of moss here she's using smaller pieces and she's using her thumb to push it up against the rim to the side in order to create a nice seal around the whole basket so she'll do this for the whole length of the basket okay anna has finished mossing the sides of the basket and also the top of the basket she secured her wire on the top of it and now it's time for a haircut have you noticed our spagna ms a little kind of loose and swirly on the outside and we need to trim it up so Anna's going to take her garden shears and just kind of trim up the outside of the basket so it has a nice clean now that we've finished trimming the basket we are going to focus on planting the basket we are going to show you the techniques of doing top planting of the basket and also sign planting of basket the flowers we've chosen for this basket are marigolds alyssum Spedding begonias and lobelia so Anna's going to go ahead and start doing the planting when side planting a moss basket the most important part is taking the cell of the one to one of your plants so right here we have a marigold cleaning off the excess soil around it so you kind of start with a smaller root ball itself now here's the important part you want to wrap some of your Spagna moss around the root ball so it stays intact when you insert it into the basket which is what we're going to show you right now when side planting a basket the process is as follows she's going to insert her hand into the mock empty moss basket she's going to create a pocket or a hole in order to put the flower cell in so if you see we started from the second row up she's created a hole and made a gap in between the two wires so she can insert the pre rup cell that we wrapped with moss and push it into that hole so you kind of have to kind of jiggle it around a little bit but the plants pliable and you want to push it all the way in until you see the flower sticking out you until you see the leaves sticking out but on the inside of the plant you will see the roots on the inside again notice how anna is taking the moss and she's wrapping it around the root ball but also around the top of the where the stem of the plant comes to the soil to kind of create a collar so when she pushes the plant into the moss it creates a collar on the outside so you have a seamless look between loss and loss - you see no soil sometimes she has six plantings per section sometimes she does find plenty per Section when she was planting this she felt it needed one more plant in it that she added the alyssum to give an effect of six but again there's no there's no right recipe it's whatever visually looks best for you as you're planting this but you always want to leave room for the plants to grow so you don't want them right next to each other and you don't want the whole thing covered because plants need room to expand Anna has finished side planting in her basket so now she's going to fill the inside of her Moss basket was soil till it gets to the top of the rim maybe about an inch down from the top of the rim because you want to be able to have your plants in here yet you still want to be able to water so it doesn't spill out the sites she's just putting the soil in kind of pushing it down a little bit compact as you notice that it just kind of puts the plants more into place and it has finished filling up the middle of the basket with soil now she's going to do her top planting and the way we like to create this basket and top planting is we are using the same plants as we have around the basket so it's just repeating the same item so it will be your marigolds your begonia your alyssum in your lobelia the one thing different about this basket is we're going to plant all of the plants around the edge of the pot or the edge of the basket excuse me instead of and we're going to leave the Center empty and open and that will be the water well that will be where when you want to water your plant you water from the center out the water will disseminate down the basket it shouldn't hit all of the roots and all of the moss on the sides if at any time you see that it's drying out a little bit on the sides just go ahead and give the side of your basket a little bit of water just to kind of hydrate it but again leaving the water will empty in the middle and watering from the middle of the top of the basket down should be enough to keep your whole basket nicely watered and growing properly so now that we've completed top planting our basket the next step in this process is to find a great location in your guard in order to hang a so one week later our basket is starting to really fill in the miracles are really starting to pop the alyssum is opening up as well as a little bit yeah we found our great spot hopefully when you plant yours you'll find your great spot if you're not up for the challenge of mossing and plant in your own basket we have pre moss and planted baskets here at Rogers and both Sun and shade color schemes that would just brighten up your yard if you are up for a slight challenge we do pep baskets already pre Moss so all you'll have to do is a plantain or again if you want to do the whole challenge please come on in we've got the wireframes for you we have the Spagna Moss available an amazing selection of plants in order to create your own beautiful creation
