Please explain how to drive a manual - (hill starts)

starting on a hill is a daunting task however if you live in a hilly area this technique is a must it's especially frightening if you're new to driving a manual transmission and if there's an expensive car parked behind you but to be honest with a little bit of practice and some patience it's not all that difficult if you're brand new to driving a manual car check out our instructional tutorial at the link below once you're done with that come back over here and we'll teach you how to start on a hill try to find an abandoned moderately sloped hill that you can practice on because you don't need to start with something incredibly steep it'll only make it more difficult there's pretty much two different ways of doing this one technique requires the ebrake you know if you're on a really steep hill sometimes you can use that the other technique does not require an e-brake and quite honestly even though I drive in San Francisco which was has some of the steepest most ridiculous hills I don't usually use the ebrake because as you perfect the technique it's not all that necessary with Hill starts there's essentially two main goals the first is not stalling and the second which is probably the most important is not rolling backwards into something behind you to accomplish these goals the real key is swiftness right now I've got my left foot on the clutch my right foot on the brake and I have the car in neutral if I let off the brake I roll backwards the reason this is difficult is because you have to switch from your right foot on the brake to the gas pedal quickly in order to prevent from rolling backwards so put the car in first this is easier on a more gradual hill because the rolling back is less extreme but really focus on getting your right foot from the brake to the gas as quickly as possible while simultaneously getting to the biting point of the clutch throw really quickly and then from there you release the clutch and press the gas in you can actually also start releasing the clutch a little bit the car started squatting down and the revs were dropping well I still have my foot on the brake and then right there give it some gas and let off the clutch so for the ebrake technique on steeper Hills same thing as before put the car in first gear left foot all the way on the clutch right foot on the brake now you're going to take your right hand and pull up all the way on the emergency brake it's key to keep your thumb on the button because if you don't you're not going to be able to push it down quickly and might cause problems to cause you to stall so keep your thumb on the button pull up and then the reason this makes it easier then without the ebrake easier meaning easier not to rollback is that you can take your foot off the brake and not roll backwards on these silly BMWs they sometimes roll backwards a little bit even with the e brake on but enough said pull up on it and then you're going to do the same thing release the clutch a little bit until you feel the rear end of the car bogged down and then put your foot on the gas give it some gas more than normal and release from the clutch the good thing about the e brake is that you don't actually have to have your right foot on the brake if it breaks all the way up you can rest it on the gas for a seamless transition so here we go so just like before didn't roll back at all which is good honestly hill starts are all practice it's hard at first especially if you're just learning how to drive a manual but the biggest thing is quickness that transition from your right foot on the brake to your right foot on the gas while you release the clutch makes it so you don't roll backwards it makes it so you don't stall well I hope you found this tutorial helpful honestly Hill starts are not that hard if you have some practice and some patience they do have an intimidation factor because it's embarrassing to stall your car in public as well as run into the car behind you but if you forget about the embarrassment factor go do this in some private area where there's no cars behind you and there's nothing to worry about it and you'll get it done and learn it quickly
