hey everybody what's up today we're doing something totally different I'm gonna be trying to make a broom using brute corn this is the first time I've done this I have no idea what I'm doing but hey let's give it a try obviously I have a big pile of brim corns and I picked it from the garden pair of scissors some twine and I couldn't find a stick that really would do the job I don't think but I had this tobacco stick so I'll just grab this one and we'll see what happens with it the first thing I've got to do is I've got to strip the seeds off every single one of these you can see the seeds this bristly part here is what we want so I have to take the seats off this I try to do this by hand at first on misson and it worked pretty well but it basically tore my hands all up so what I ended up doing is just grabbing an old beach towel and all I do is put seeds in there and run it through like so and you gotta kind of do it a little gently because you'll break the bristles if you don't but in general if you just do a few strands at the time it seems to work pretty well and it's definitely a lot less painful than the other way I was doing so I'm gonna go ahead and strip all this corn and then I'll be back to you after that all right so here we are my broom corn is mostly clean there's still some seeds in there but I'm not gonna lose any sleep over this because this is hard work anyway you can tell my corn not all of it was completely dry you can see some of them are a little more yellow and brown like they'd be dry like this one then some of these greener ones you know I planted it late that's totally my fault but I'm just gonna go ahead and do it and see how this works the Internet does not have very much information about how to make brooms so believe it or not from the record so I'm just gonna kind of wing this this makes a massive mess I'm not even kidding I don't even think that I picked enough broom corn it's looking a little sparse if you ask me but look at this enormous pile of seeds I tried to Google around to see if these seeds are viable I couldn't find anything about that so I don't know if you could save these and plant these I'll probably throw them in the yard and see if they go up next year or something like that I definitely don't recommend doing this project in the house because ironically enough if I'm successful at this the first project I'm gonna use it for is to sweep up my kitchen because there are broom corn seeds everywhere not even exaggerating all right let's try this the first thing I'm gonna do is just tie a simple knot around the base of the stem and I'm using twine it's nice and neon yellow I hope you guys can see it it's a little loose so I think I'm gonna tack it down with something I didn't have a tack or staple or anything like that but I did have some floral tape laying around and I'm just gonna give that a quick wrap around I think that'll hold it in place just enough alright next I'm gonna wrap this around several times have to deal with this roll here get it nice and tight now I'm gonna start adding my bristles I rearranged the camera so you can see a little bit let's start adding my bristles I gotta keep keep you guys in frame I keep accidentally going on a frame I'm just gonna slide it up under here and this will be my first row I'm gonna turn it add another piece right next to it basically all I'm doing is lining them up around the whole width of the board now as you're doing this you can kind of look at it and see well okay this one's way too long I need to push this one back that kind of thing that's another reason that I'm glad that I chose this smaller piece of wood my hands aren't very big so it's probably a lot easier for me to grip all the way around like I'm doing I still have seeds falling off this thing I figured if all else fails this would be like maybe a really cool fall decoration for the porch or something like that I think that would be really all right so you can see it here all I've done is I've gone around really tight around the length of all these so next thing I'm gonna do is I'm going to snip off these ends right here which might be a little difficult while holding this all right just so you know when I tie this I did not disconnect it from my twine I still want this to be connected I think this will get covered up once I add the second layer of broomcorn so I'm gonna cut these across right here and then I'm going to show you the next layer so as a quick note if I were to do this again I definitely would not use scissors these are not sharp enough I would probably use at my garden printers also I'm gonna go ahead and add a layer of this floral water to this just in case it's slipping and it makes me nervous I don't want to work hard on something and then it fail I actually and research at all this I was reading about how these brooms the heads of these would fly off the handle and it made me think of the expression when somebody's flying off the handle I was like oh that's where it comes from like I'd be out there waving my broom around at home and my broom would just fly apart I love it all right there that is wrap it around nice and tightly a couple times next we're going to add another layer so we're gonna do the exact same thing only it's going to go around this outer layer as you can see all I did again was layer it and wrap the broomcorn around the whole thing again and I'm going to tie that with my twine and tie it up with a piece of wire and then I'll show you what I do next all right now that I've got this drawn nice and tight I'm gonna start weaving the string all that happens is you go over under over under all the way around over under over under and this hopefully will keep this on here nice and secure so I started to weave and I realized it was gonna be impossible with all those stems sticking off here so I went ahead and I cut those off and now all I'm gonna do is just weave over and under and you see those two right there are kind of thin so I just went ahead did go through those together I think the thinner ones that'll work fine but doing this you can really tell how important it is that your twine is really strong because I'm pulling this really tight so that it will not come off my handle so I'm gonna go ahead and do this all the way to the top and we'll see what we get and hope that it looks like a broom it probably won't I did a rap here at the top and I'm taking my string just behind these and I'm going to tie it off behind these so you don't see it okay so here it is I've made a broom this is crazy the last thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna try to kind of like fluff out the bristles it looks a little thin and I'm gonna do this and then I'll show you the final product I'm honestly pretty impressed with this this is the first time if I had bigger brim corn I think it would look a lot better but this is definitely something I would put out on the porch with my fall decorations hope you enjoyed this video if you did you can subscribe follow me on every social media thing there is practically and check out the mug back
