okay so in this video we are going to be looking at how to hard prune a ramblin rose so on this wall here in this garden we have a few different roses climber here next is the Rambler that we're going to be pruning today I've got another small climbing rose here here small small area these roses all flower pretty well considering that it is you know a little bit shady here I'm doing this in at the end of July and you can kind of do this any time after flowering through the winter really because we're we're forming a new structure on this Rose this is why we're doing it so I want to create a bit more space between all these roses which is why we're going to be pruning this Rambler now the thing with rambling roses is they flower on old wood so what that means is this bright green vibrant growth this is what it's put on this year and this particular ramblin rose here has got one two three four five about twelve of these fresh new shoots so they're not going to flower this year and this Rose has already flowered this year but these will flower next year so these are the ones that we're going to be one of keeping and to train in thinking about the next season's flowering so what that means is we need to take out all of the older stems and on this particular rose because we've brought so many new shoots coming through I'm gonna be taking out all of the old stems if we were doing this and we maybe had one or two fresh shoots that we wanted to train in then we're only gonna remove maybe one or two of the old stems it depends how vigorous you plant is so that's the job for today the first stage is going to be taking these new sheets and just for the moment removing them moving them out of the way as best we can to be able to work around the plant and take out the old stuff without getting scratched to help so that's kind of stage [Applause] as you're working through here we can now start taking some of the old growth out this is going to be all of this we're going to remove and we're going to be we're going to take it out interceptions for these as cutting it out but we want to take it out eventually right down in there to ground we're doing here seems a bit brutal it's not rest assured that it's not roses need this rejuvenation to keep them keeping flowering with rambling roses you can leave the old stems on and they will flower very well for years it is good to get into a cycle taking out the old replacing with fresh scent we've cut all of the old Rose out now that's all gone so just left is the fresh stems a nicer case of tying them in so we actually have one two three four five six seven eight nine ten all in good Nick and only think about tying ones in there in good Nick example this one here this is one which actually snapped off here in the wind a little while ago I cut it off and it's it's regrow but as we don't need eleven stems if we've got one that's got that bit of damage in you'll probably just follow it down and take him out and it's um under one less to worry about how you tie these in is dictated by how much space you've got nicely climbing over there so we've only got a kind of you know reasonably limited amount of space here we've got one stem that's going up here and we'll probably bring another up following my finger straight up but the bulk of them don't want to get them going over in this area away from this tree and tied in so that's what we will do now get all these tied in this is a good opportunity before you tie in to have a check of all your wires and if you need to put additional wires in you can do that now this wall is obviously and quite it's not not great Nick it's a very old wall but we have suitable wires here for what we want but that would be a good opportunity if you needed to [Applause] so that's this one tied in now they're all tied in just with normal garden twine don't ever use of wire or even the wire covered round by the plastic that you can buy after a while that goes brittle and you can damage the roses so personally I just tend to use garden twine and replace it when I need to see you can see now how that's been trained in now obviously this wall goes to a certain height and a lot of things higher than that so I'm actually gonna nip these off some of these just above that top wire they will continue to grow a little bit which sorry you can't you can't really odds but I do just want to stop them there and that's it so as I said done this in July these will continue to grow this season but next year they will all shoot flowers out from here and have a really good display I'm quite pleased with that of course now there is another rubbish to tidy up this is when you need any questions in the comment section below
