Please explain how to sew a valance with ruffled top

hello this video by needlepointers.com will explain how to sell a valance with a a rod pocket and ruffle top first thing you have to do is determine the width of the fabric for the valance by measuring the rod and multiplying this measurement by one and a half or two the fullness of the valance is a personal preference I prefer a fullness of two which gives the valance a nice ruffled look and allows enough fabric for the side hem next determine the finished length by adding six inches you measure how long you want it and just add six inches to it this six inches allows enough fabric for the bottom hem and the rod casing and the ruffle at the top you cut the fabric to the desired size and then you start sewing cut the fabric to the required size you may have to cut more than one piece to get your desired width and that's what I had to do here so what you want to do then is to sew the two pieces together using a 5/8 inch seam allowance with right sides together now because I do not want to have these raw edges I'm going to show you the technique that I use in order to do it and we'll have to go over to the ironing board and use the iron and I'll show you what okay I'm going to cut away Oh about a quarter of an inch along the one seam allowance then we're going to fold under the other seam allowance over the top of where I just cut this will give it a nice finished edge it won't fray you won't get your curtain rod caught in it when you are putting your curtain rod into the pocket of the curtain okay the next process what we're going to do is we're going to stitch right along there and stitch it down I always like to back tack okay the next thing we're going to do is we're going to do the side seams on the balance okay we're going to do the side seams first you're going to turn under the edge a quarter of an inch and then turn it again one inch I'm going to put a couple pins to hold it in place and you're going to do the same thing on the other side okay we're going to sew the side seam or side hem close to where you folded it using a straight stitch okay see that's done I'm going to do the same thing on the other side next we're going to work on the header and the casing for your vet valance you're going to turn under the top edge again approximately a quarter of an inch and now we're going to turn it again three inches and pin it in place I'll continue to do this what you're going to do is pin it in place and then also you're going to press it so that it lays nice and flat and then I'll be back after I've done that what we're going to do is stitch close to where we just folded it now we're going to stitch one inch from the top edge and that is going to make the casing for the rod and also the ruffle for the top you can use your if your machine has a built-in seam a stitch like this has one inch right there I know where my one inches or use your stitch bag okay the last step is to make the bottom hem which we are going to turn it up again a quarter of an inch like that and press it and then one and a half inches is what I like for the bottom hem so I'm going to do that and finish it and then I'll show you what the valance looks like as you see I have finished hemming the bottom and now you can put your curtain on your curtain line and this is what it would look like thank you for watching this video if you like the video please click the like button and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more sewing projects visit our website needlepointers.com a link is in the description below happy sewing you
