how's it going guys welcome to another edition of cycling tips with daemon and the topic for today's videos how to prevent your bicycle from being so on so I do want to highlight the word prevent and the reason for that is because even if you have the most expensive bike locks or you have the most comprehensive system for locking your bike up they're all susceptible to being stolen so with that in mind let's talk about let's talk about buying a proper bike lock so I see a lot of people use these these little cable locks if you actually have if you have value for your bike you actually enjoy your bike then you should never use a bike lock like this these are one of the easiest locks to get through I've had a few bites stolen in the past when I was using a simple little cable lock like this and yeah if you if you have one right now I just highly suggest that you just take it you throw it in the garbage because if you're actually using it to lock up your bike chances are eventually at some day in the future you're going to come out your bike is going to be gone and you're going to see that lock on the ground and you're going to have to pick it up and throw it in the garbage anyways so you might as well do it right now while you still actually have your bike so the type of bike lock that you want to invest in is a D lock so D locks are typically made of solid steel and I would invest in a brand like kryptonite they have definitely some of the best bikes bike locks on the market and yes I know the kryptonite locks are a little bit expensive but at the same time replacing your bicycle is probably going to be even more expensive now the type of bike lock that I have is one that I actually bought at a outdoor good store here in Canada at MEC and I think the brand name is Magnum I think I paid like 40 or something dollars for this bike lock and so the great thing about D locks is that there are much more difficult to get through they're made of solid steel so you just can't go up with like a pair of like zippers or something and just kind of cut through the lock they're going to need either like a hacksaw they're going to need a crowbar or they're going to need an angle grinder in or to get through that lock so it's just it's a lot more difficult something else that came with my bike lock is a small cable now the cable isn't actually I'm not using this to lock my frame up to anything like that I just use it in order to lock my wheels to my bike lock so the first thing that we want to talk about when we're actually locking our bicycle up is that we want to find a secure place to lock our bike up to so in this video I'm going to be locking my bike up to a bike rack so you typically see these bike racks or bike poles kind of around cities this is a this is going to be a good place to lock your bike up to now if you can't find something like this because on they actually aren't in you know in front of like most stores or malls or whatever you want to find see that signposts in the background that's that's going to be another good option for locking your bike up too so first thing first I actually really like this bike lock because it fits within the a-frame on my bike there so I'm going to pop my lock off of my bike and we're going to walk around back around here and I'm going to lock the frame right to that bike rack post now I'm going to pull out my cable in my little backpack here and what I'm going to do is I'm going to actually wrap it around my back wheel and almost kind of make like a little bit of a almost like a little bit of a noose using the loops that are on the actual cable itself so after I make that little noose what I'm going to do is I'm going to wrap it through my front wheel and as I pull it up I'm going to grab my bike lock key unlock the lock and then the other end of the bike lock cable is actually going to go on to my bike lock so right now it's totally secure and just before you actually leave and either go into the store or going to work or whatever is you actually want to remove anything from your bike that is just easy to take off so I got my my bike pump my water bottle and then my little my little bag there that's got a spare tube in there you want to take off any lights that you have on your bike or definitely do not leave your Carmen on the bike either because if you come out if you go into a store and come back chances are it's not going to be on there so something else that you might want to consider locking up or removing from your bike is your bike seat so on my bike here it's not a quick-release seat so you would actually need a bike tool to get my bike seat off so that's one reason why I don't always lock it up because they would need a tool to actually get my bike seat off so I don't lock it up but if I wasn't say I was in downtown New York City or something like that what I would do is I would get another cable so I'd get another cable and run it through the rails of my bike seat and then I would run that cable to my bike lock and lock it up there as well if somebody actually really wanted my bike seat you know they can have it but just for the trouble of going through and unlocking out my bike seat like it's just not something that I really just want to do all the time something else that you can use to protect your wheels instead of using a bike cable like I'm using in this video here is to get skewers that actually require a hex tool to get them to open up so that's something else that you can use I know my buddy um he goes he goes to a university and locks his bike up there and he doesn't use a bike cable for the wheels he just has he just has these skewers that actually require a hex tool to get them to open so that's the Sun that's just something else that you can do as well something else that I think is important is deciding where you're actually locking your bike up so as your is your bike locked up in some kind of like gnarly a little alley or is it kind of like out in the open you know lots of pedestrian traffic lots of people walking by if if it's in typically in a place that has a lot more kind of like a lot more stuff going kind of going on like a lot more people walking around that might also deter bike thieves from stealing your bike just because there's people around and they could get caught so so those are all the tips that I have for preventing bike theft if you have any more good tips that you'd like to pass along to other people definitely leave them in the comment box below and if you have any questions or comments you can leave them down there as well awesome thanks so much for watching guys have a great day talk to you soon peace out
