Please explain how to use an egg lathe - craft and egg lathes demonstration tutorial by carolyn trout

hi Laurey papa here I've come from a wonderful egg shell called besakih at the gardens while there we filmed some wonderful tips from egg artist granted the quality of the audio and video is not spectacular since we weren't in a studio but I'm sure you will pick up some very interesting information I'm sharing with you today an amazing demo for how to use an egg laid by my good friend Caroline trout I am going to show you how to use four different lights and the first one is the least expensive it's craft blade you can buy it almost anywhere you can buy them on Amazon for 38 bucks or something like that selling for 24 right now now with the craft the craft lays the the little inserts here the little plastic inserts rubber inserts often fall out and they get old and they get tired so you can buy inserts what I recommend that if you get this that you put a little dot of glue in there because otherwise you're going to loose them they're going to fall out but it's basically very simple and if you want to draw a line in the exact middle that when you've dipped me about a 1/4 inch drop your hand right here there's your light and then you can I draw a grid every single egg I do I start with a grid this way and then if you have a table you can draw lines longitudinally this way this one is just a piece of laminate and then with the PVC but I'll show you how to make your own yes alright Sega 10:50 maybe 10:55 the sides in eighths and I marked the other one in sixths and the way I did that was with the templates that you can buy that have the holes cut out and marked off they're not exact unfortunately because those templates are not always cut exactly what I would do do it again I should get these marks off take something like Google and get those marks off and run a tape around and mark them exactly because I'm off just a little bit on these but if you want to draw the longitudinal lines you put your pencil on here and you need a pencil that is flat you cannot use one that's got a grip for a hole put your pants on here touch it exactly to that muck and then just draw your line then you advance if you're doing eights you advance to the next mark if you're doing fourths you advance to that mark and then just draw your line and then here now if you want to draw ovals you elevate this see that may be too much yep you can play with this raise the height of your table let's do another one you need something that's absolutely flat and usually a magazine won't work it's the binding or something but if you use something's absolutely flat what you can do here is this then be careful not to touch the edge turn it around that's super smart and you do this and then you've got you've got the oval and if you raise it higher you can still do we could still do more yeah the perfect doesn't really do it that's exactly guys so you're draining and don't you yes these are blown out before and I I am too lazy to blow my own eggs out now I buy mine already blown out but many people blow their their own H out okay and many people do not blow them out I like to work on blown aids because when you blow the eggs out they are vulnerable that's me that's one of the times we're vulnerable and I don't want to expend all the time you're just around on eggs now this is the least expensive made and this is a thing somebody else made for me but this was my first blade that's what I got my very first blade and it hasn't been manufactured for a long time but if anybody looks at this and takes it to machine shop it is dead simple in terms of construction I think somebody could reproduce that and the important thing to remember when you're making the table the table has to be the exact height so if you put your pencil on it it goes into the exact middle of that so what I did is get some pieces of flooring that had Bethany woodshop and played with it until I could get different types of wood until I could exactly match the very center of that spindle so here on this one I have just out of found items made this and you can do that as long as you have things that are perfectly flat and on this this is my favorite lathe it's my oldest but it's also my favorite it is the most secure the egg does not twist or turn in that and I put a piece of every label around and mark the markings so that I can do eight or six and also on this one I like to mark right around this edge because when you've got that end circle like that it's really easy to find the exact middle then when you have that smaller circle so this one is exactly like that one except this one is made out of metal I like the end caps better but it operates in exactly the same way and because this is perfectly flat and I can raise this one again to make ovals in do whatever I want when you turn it it is important to remember not to have your hand free rest it here and don't rest it here write it on top put the pencil down on the table like this yeah it catches you have much better control if you do this way because you are controlling the pressure and so it is much better and if you're ever curious about whether you have it balanced exactly do that and if the lines match you've got it balanced I always eggs are almost never perfectly symmetrical I had an ostrich egg the other day I was trying to get centered and it wouldn't Center because it had a flat side but if you just get it lined up and you can turn and can you can see that it is staying and then you can just adjust a little bit at a time so this is my question how do you get the egg in the lathe filiz you fiddle with it do you wanna do it you watching some easier no no you watch it and it wasn't nothing is easy but this makes it so much easier now this is the lathe but until very recently that crane Ukrainian gift shop used yes so I don't know 30 back 250 back something like that I bought it many years ago and I hated it it had a little set screw here and a little set screw here with a little tiny allen wrench and it was so hard to adjust also the cups on the end here are not very sturdy and it is hard to get this adjusted I took this to a machinist last year then I had him make modifications he drilled little holes in this and put this little thing here so it is very easy to move that I'm not going to move it now because of my egg will drop it doesn't have to be tightened all it has to do is drop enough to drop into that hole so you don't have to worry about tightening it to anything else and it got a long Ranger France was his arm and he had hers modified she would bring it but she flees in Pittsburgh she had it cut out very big and she had heftier cups put on it so she can do an ostrich egg on this one but I had I did not do that one I had this little thing put on it because the Ukrainian gift shop charged you 150 bucks for this and then the stop was a modified paper clip which was easy to lose whatever and then the little set screw so if you want to come around on the back I'll show you how this works this is a little I had them put I had them decide how to do this there's a little stop there and then you can turn that to the next thing and it provides a stop but I forgot to tell them that I needed to make a way to have the wheel free because I needed to be able to turn it freely to do this I forgot to tell them that so just this morning I fiddled with other things just this morning I figured this one out because a binder clip well I believe one of them not and if you use a heavy rubber band I can take this hold that necessities necessity is the mother of invention that leaves the wheel free then see this you if you hold it you could make something like this out of wood and a dowel and draw draw something how do you find the center this way with this you just decide to line oh I don't know no it's that way I measure here from end to end mark the middle approximately say it's there I just measure and then that is where I set my this one I'm doing the wrong hand now I carry separate tools this one the design flaw here is that that thing is in there and you can't get your fingers in so I carry a little pliers so that I can get in with that I carry a little screwdriver because this one adjusts down here with the screw where you have to move that back and forth you do not have to spend a lot of money go for an ostrich egg white my husband made me my first wing if you could reach now this this is big and clunky but it was scrap wood he made it a lot bigger than he needed to he could have made it this long but basically I used this for 20 years for ostrich eggs and it worked fine and it cost no money so that's you've got a huge variety of options here for lights
