Please explain how to dye yarn - part 3: speckled

its Nicole with you loco and I'm here with you for another yarn dyeing tutorial if you haven't checked out the first two I would encourage you to do that the very first one has kind of the rundown on the materials and stuff so check that out see what you need to get but I'm going to jump right into dyeing yarn today I've showed you how to dye solid color I've showed you how to do like a variegated tone color and today I'm going to show you how to leave the white on your Hank and get like this really beautiful kind of stripe speckled look and this is kind of like a two-in-one because this one doesn't have any speckles and this one kind of has some black speckles on through it so I'm going to show you it's like one little more step to do that I'm going to show you how to do that as well so this is kind of these are kind of an example three examples of something that you could create after watching this tutorial so I've already pre soaked my bare hank in citric acid and water so I have that ready right here and I have a stainless steel dye pot right here right and I'm going to go ahead and turn it on now I only have about 1/2 an inch of water in here and that's the trick to doing this sort of technique so I'm going to go ahead and put my citric acid in my pot about 1/2 a tablespoon because I always like to err on the more side make sure all my dye gets absorbed into my fiber and I'm just moving it around to make sure it gets completely dispersed and I've already pre-mixed my colors I'm going to do three colors today I have this this is a pinky purple tone I have a I believe it's in avocado and this really beautiful chocolate brown so you're gonna they're very they're all very bold and vibrant so you're going to be able to see and I think this is an eighth of a teaspoon in each and yeah that's right and I only have about a half an inch of water I want this to be really calm traded when I put it in hey guys really quick I wanted to insert it you need to be wearing a mask when you mix your acid dyes and gloves gloves are good as well you don't want those fine particles getting in your lungs I did not for this tutorial because you couldn't hear me it was too hard to explain what I was doing but I normally wear these 3m masks with the n95 so put your mask on so I'm going to go ahead and get my gloves on and get that Hank in the pot because I want it to go in at room temp into room temp water be careful about how I pick that up because I don't want it to get all fuzzy and I'm just going to very carefully set that in there and you'll notice it's not all in the water and this is pre soaked so it it's already holding some but it's not all sitting in the water and that's exactly what we want and I want to spread this kind of around so I can see all of the top edges of the whole Hank it's not folding funny so I'm going to let this sit and it's only going to take a few minutes to get up to simmering point and at simmering point that's the peak of when the fiber is going to suck in the quickest and the most color and once it gets once it gets cool enough it no longer will absorb color so right at that simmer point is when we're going to take these dyes and we're going to set them in very gently okay so at this point we're starting to get little little simmer bubbles so we're just going to want to turn it off so you don't want that yarn to disturbed and I just pushed myself a little tiny hole in the middle so I can kind of see how the Hank is distributed around what I'm going to do is start with my brighter color and I'm just going to slowly drop in these colors and my rule for myself during this part is less is more because sometimes I get a little overzealous and I get too much and I want to be able to see the white so I'm going to do a few little drops and it kind of looks it's not like really attractive in the pot but this technique ends up looking really really beautiful and it's quite desirable I think so I'm just slowly adding very gently I don't want to splash I don't want to disturb it I'm gonna go ahead and put in my pabich Otto I think this is cold I can't remember moss-green maybe setting that in really gently following along with my less-is-more rule and then I'm gonna put just a little brown kind of on the outer edge just to see what kind of fun effect I get with that don't I want to do this all relatively quickly so that I make sure the dye gets absorbed and so at this point you can see there's a lot of white left but that dye is falling through and getting all of the fiber underneath of it as well so you could just leave this and completely let it cool and clean it um you know rinse it wash it with soap and it would be beautiful but I want to take it one more step and do a little bit of speckling on top of this so I'm going to take my gloves off for this and kind of have a steady hand I'm going to take my chocolate dye and just get a little bit on the edge there and now I kind of like to the steam sometimes make it makes it difficult because it comes up and gets onto the spoon but I just like to tap on this spoon you can see I'm getting some areas that have more speckle more concentrated and some that have less so I'm just kind of looking and that less is more rules kind of coming up on Nina here now so I'm going to go with this and see what kind of effect we get there so I'm just going to let this sit nuts the trick you do not want to disturb the pot you need to completely you need to let it cool up completely to room temperature before you try to move this and clean out any excess dye okay so we brought our dye pot over here to the sink and I wanted to show you this part because it can be a little bit tricky with the speckling and the excess dye that we have just sitting you can see we just have it sitting right there on top and we really don't want a ton of that white area to be touched and even though the pot is cool to room temp I still wanted to be a little extra careful with when I'm doing this technique so I have a water bath right here with some sudsy soap will wash and when I pick up the skein I'm going to pick it up with two hands and put it into the water as quickly as I can to get that soap in there you can kind of see the little speckled eye that I put in at the end is getting on my gloves I'm going to rinse that off over here okay so for this one I'm gonna get a little bit more soap on my hands push that out to plea you can see there's a lot of excess dye with this method I'm just gonna continue to put soap in here and push and rain until I get all of that extra out you can see that our skein the white area is turned kind of like this light pink color and there also some wider areas on the inside there if you want even more white than this I would suggest using even less dye you have color spread out a bit further or you could I kind of doll up to this around the circle you could just have colors in like three designated areas too if you want a lot more white bring this out so you can see there's still some died not nearly as much as when we started but I'll continue to wring this out and get this all cleaned up and then I'm just going to hang it probably outside to dry but you can see that it has all of these really beautiful pinks Browns this is that really pretty green over here and then we got kind of some interesting stuff going on in the white some different light areas of pink and brown so this is a really fun technique to use when you're dyeing yarn but thank you so much for following along with this tutorial and remember you can download that free pdf it has the materials list it has tips and tricks and it also has a side-by-side comparison of dye pots and finished Hanks so if you do this hash tag me on Instagram so I can check out how you're dyeing is going and also you can subscribe to this channel for more how-to videos so thank you so much for following and check out the picture of the finished game
