hi I'm janae with Janae's tropicals in st. Petersburg Florida today I'm going to demonstrate how to prune a pomegranate tree you'll just need a few basic materials such as a pair of sharp pruners a bottle of alcohol or hydrogen peroxide or a diluted bleach this ensures that the pruners are bacteria free and that also you may need a stake with pi tape if you need to stake up any of the branches examine the tree and trim any decaying or dead wood next if you have any branches that are crossing you want to prune them basically you want your tree to grow or tree or bush this one is shaped like a bush you want it to grow outward like an umbrella well just tip some of these smaller branches you want to come in at an angle it's a great idea to get as much growth on the tips as possible and basically this tree is just coming out of dormancy this is a Vietnamese pink pomegranate and I'm going to tip these I would prune the tree probably once every 1 to 2 years it really doesn't need like continual pruning like some trees pomegranates really want to grow nice and bushy but it is possible to grow them like a standard tree if you choose to you don't have to I'm janae have a wonderful day
