hey guys it's me Sophie piggy and this video is how to tame a chinchilla by taming I mean getting your chinchillas to bond and warm up to you chinchillas are prey animals by Nature therefore they have the instinct and mindset that everything and everyone is trying to eat them however they have a curious and loving personality so it shouldn't take long for them to become inseparable from you the first thing to consider when you are trying to tame your chinchilla is where has your chinchilla come from and how are they treated before if you go to chinchilla from the pet store most likely they have been roughly treated and have grown fearful of humans with rescue chinchillas they may be scared of humans or they may have grown to love humans by that I mean in their old home they may have been mistreated and have grown fearful of humans however rescues usually take amazing care of their animals and rehabilitate them back into dressing humans my recommendation is to adopt from a chinchilla rescue once you are able to understand why your chinchilla may act the way they do you can relate to them and learn to be more patient when you first get your chinchilla you want to leave them alone and allow them to get acclimated to their new home on their own you don't want to grab them to take them out for playtime in the first week I know it can be tempting but after a couple of days you can start sitting by their cage and observe just quietly and soothingly observe them when you change their food and water and you put your hand in the cage to change it you can let them sniff your hand if they want to you don't want to stick your hand in front of their face don't force it just let them come to you make sure to have plenty of hiding places so that they have a safe place to run to if they get scared it's also a good idea to possibly get to to chose instead of getting one they most likely will feel more confident with a friend I mean I know I rather go through scary times with a friend make sure to have same-gender pairs or groups as that is the safest option because chinchilla pregnancy is very complicated usually after just the first stage in chela's will work up the nerve to come out of hiding and explore their new cage if you are worried your new pet isn't eating or drinking you might want to move the food and water closer to this safe spot so that they don't have to be so terrified to just eat a little bit so after the first week you can start hand feeding your chinchilla through the bars so just there pellets or rosehips remember though that a few feed treats too much through the bars you can show them might start mistaking your fingers for food and can begin to nibble on you be cautious with what you feel you can tell us and don't go overboard with treats if you want to handie your chinchilla multiple times in a day i remember bowl and feeding them those another safe treat option is just handing handing your chinchilla a safe wood twig for them did you want after your chinchilla starts eating out of your hand through the bars you can place a tree in your hand and then put your hand in their cage a safe tree would be a pinch of whole oats when you put your hand in their cage try to be as still as possible and just let them explore and sniff your hand if they jump on your hand keep still and don't try to pull your hand and the turn chilla out of the cage that will only scare them more and that's not what you want so the next step is to put more of your hand and arm in the cage place a treat farther back on your arms so they can jump onto your arm once again don't try to take them out just yet as that will scare them and you'll have to start the process all over again so once you should show is getting more confident in their new home it might be a good idea to try your hand at their first playtime so make sure to use your best judgment as a playtime that's too early will scare you to cello's even more because they aren't ready for that and it will be hard to get them back into their cage you should have the play time in the same room that your chinchillas cages in so you can just open the door and they can come out and go into their cage whenever they want likely your chinchilla won't just initially hop out as it will take a while for them to work up the nerve to come out of their safety zone Eve eventually they will though if you want to try to get them out quicker it might be a good idea to place a treat outside their cage try to learn them learn them out but don't force it another idea is to get to get them out of the cage would be to take a dust bath house put it in their cage and when they go and cover the hole and take them out however that should be a last resort because like I said you want to let them decide when to come out and they can start not wanting to go into the dust bats because they're quick learner learners so when you should show is out for playtime to sit quietly and talk to them soothingly usually chinchillas get adventurous and will jump all over you don't be scared just enjoy that they are warming up to you if you should show tries to leap at your face which my chinchillas do all the time don't freak out they're just trying to jump on your head or your shoulder and they might have missed or maybe they didn't miss so make sure that your playtime area is safe or else you'll be trying to get everything away from them and they won't like you and you are putting them in danger so make sure to block everything has are just off using either playpens like safe play pens or cardboard boxes so have playtime with them every day for at least 30 minutes and soon they will start to bond with you and kind of get into routine and everything so when you are trying to get your - Gela back into the cage which is usually the funnest part of all in the beginning it's usually pretty difficult but you can use the dust bath method and just place their dust bath on the ground wait for them to get in once they get in you put their dust back in their cage then take the bug dust back out because they don't you shouldn't let them have access to the dust path 24/7 the other method is just to be patient which is plain and simple just wait for them to go back into their cage and remember tangelos are worth it they are such rewarding pets and will love you unconditionally as long as you love them and care for them so now I'm going to adjust some signs that your chinchilla isn't uncomfortable or mad annoyed or scared by you and you need to slow things down so if your fimo chinchilla sprays your you that's an obvious sign she isn't pleased by you vocalizing and biting is also a sign that they usually are fearful of you chinchillas that show these signs you'll need to be extra patient with them when interacting with your fearful chinchilla don't look them in the into the eyes as that is a source of intimidation so you the first step to fixing these problems these behavioral problems you need to find out what triggers your chilla to either spray urine bite or vocalize so for example if your chilli gets scared when you make a sudden movement just move slower it's usually not that simple but sometimes it is that simple so you also have to know you have to know what triggers them to know how to fix it so personally Chico he used to bite me when I wore loose pants like PJ pants that moved all around when I walked he would get excited jump and he would try to grab the fabric but instead he would get me he would also bite me to test me and he also he still bites when he gets bored like if we have them out for too long he'll be like screw this put me back in my cage and he'll bite me so if your shegella just runs up to you and bites you likely they are uncomfortable with your presence or they are testing you usually it's a set that they're being territorial so to work on that you want to sleep with an old t-shirt or something and get your smell all over it then place it in your chinchillas cage and therefore they can get used to your scent and then how to fix and biting depends on if your turtle is scared is fear biting or testing biting by testing biting I mean like if they're trying to see their limits or they're just testing you just like a kid tests their limits if you chew is scared of you you need to respect them and don't push them like don't push it you don't want to force your relationship get them used to your scent and your presence let them come to you don't go to them and just UI show they don't want them to be your dinner you want them to be your friend so if your chill is biting you to test you whatever you do do not run away like don't show fear that's what they want so instead hold your ground some people recommend to lightly and quickly blow on their face and say affirm no because chinchillas won't like that it doesn't hurt them it's just they don't like it so I will not recommend doing this if you have a virus or are sick as you're sure we'll be able to catch it and this is where it's really important to know if you should show this fear of biting or testing biting because if you blow into it jaw that's scared face they're just gonna be more scared of you so don't hurt your shell that's a huge important factor do not hit slick throw any kind of violent action toward your chinchilla that will just ruin your relationship and I know I would bite a human if they were beating me up so it'll just need self-defense when it comes to that so chico knows he shouldn't bite me but he's cheeky and kind of evil so he likes to test me so all i have to do now though it's just say no and he stops cuz he knows he's not supposed to he just doesn't when he's bored really or he still kind of does it if I move too quickly but it's really not that bad it's not like good they're not attacking you or anything some chinchillas are just naturally a little more nippy than others like Chico nips me all the time but Titan has never ever nibbled me like he would not even open his mouth at me so it all just depends on your jaw however make sure to not mistake a taste test nibble for a bite as chinchillas may nibble you just to see who you are and they're gonna be like what the heck if you're like freaking out they've just nibbled you you'll know if it's lendable aura or by bites kind of hurt or their hold onto you so yeah that's really your side so remember don't move too don't go after to job be patient so I hope this video helped and if you have any more questions feel free to
