hey I'm Jason creo with Alabama lon pros you know after years in a lawn business one thing became clear to me and that's some people don't have a good idea of how to water their lawn now obviously we know how to put water on our lawn but what I'm talking about is you know the proper amount of water and how often the water here in Alabama you obviously know that in the summer we have very hot and humid weather and so water it becomes necessary a lot of times the amount of rain we get just does not keep up with the needs of the grass so you may use a sprinkler or maybe you have a full irrigation system installed so I want to lay out some general principles of watering and help you understand what we're trying to accomplish by water in the grass and then you can take that and adjust your water and practices to fit your specific situation so you know the overall goal in watering is to get a deep soaking you know as opposed to just a little shower that's why you know if it rains in the summer you'd rather have a good heavy soaking rain as opposed to a few you know 10 or 15 minute showers so the reason is that that encourages the roots to grow deeper which can lead to a healthier turf you know where if you just have a shallow watering it can encourage shower or root growth is not as as good for the plant so what I would encourage you to do is is to really soak your lawn when you water it now depending on what kind of sprinkler are you using or what kind of heads are on your irrigation system you know that may mean 30 minutes it may mean 45 minutes it's hard to say without seeing but as a general rule you want to soak it as opposed to a shower now if you have an irrigation system set up and you have different zones you know whether it's a rain bird or a hunter you typically can adjust how much water comes out in each zone so maybe you have one zone that just hits a little flower bed well perhaps on that zone you want to set it to run every other day for maybe just five minutes because the flowers need more regular watering but not necessarily the soaking that you want your grass so for on your grass you may set that to run 30 or 45 minutes you know maybe maybe once a week if you get rain another day or maybe if you if you're not having any rain you may set to run twice a week and then if it does rain you may have a sensor on it that will automatically shut it off or you may have to manually shut it off if we've been getting plenty of rain and you don't need to run it so they just want to help you understand the general principles behind watering your lawn I realize that even in Alabama there's different climate zones you know perhaps if you're down closer to the coast and you have st. Augustine grass you may need to water a little more frequently because of the different conditions there but you know the good news is for my child family when you're dealing with Bermuda grass you know it's extremely drought tolerant so even if it turns brown it would take a serious drought before the grass actually starts to die in it it's able to bounce back pretty quickly once applying water hope this helps thanks you
