Please explain how to install a satellite radio antenna (car stereo) | car audio 101

alright guys so on top of this install we're also adding satellite radio now do we get a lot of questions how do you route the antenna for the satellite radio it's actually pretty simple depending on where you put it of course there's some different locations that we can actually use when mounting the antenna typically obviously the easiest portion is gonna be right here in the corner on the roof the center or the patricide corner doesn't matter some people actually like putting it on the back hatch area of the vehicle so it's a little more hidden or on the trunk area totally cool and one thing to know especially with Sirius they like to be on the metal surface they're magnetic that usually doubles the size of the antenna so putting this serious or XM antennas on the inside of the vehicle like on the dash or inside the dash is typically not the best recommendation because you won't get the best reception I've done it in instances before it's an XM antenna and I mount it to the cowl of the vehicle where your windshield wipers are so it's a little more stealth typically use some double sticky tape because it's nothing metal there and the reception is not bad or right on the window but today I'm going to do it a little bit more differently I'm going to mount it up here in the corner to show you guys actually how I feed the cable through the weather stripping to the inside of the vehicle there's two tools that I typically use you can use an old credit card works perfect but I have my pride tools are plastic non-marring they're not a flathead screwdriver so you're not going to poke through your wires are not going to scratch paint on the vehicle hopefully if you're scratching paint the vehicle on these things I don't know you're doing so we're going to do is we're first going to decide we're going to mount the antenna as I said here in the corner this will be a perfect spot for us and the customer actually requested that so what I'm going to do they see the weather stripping on the outside of the window here is something I can't really get into and tuck a wire can but it's gonna be tight so I'm going to do is I'm going to see the weather stripping that's against the body of the a pillar right here I can actually move and twist up and get my pry tool in there see how it just slides right into the weather stripping so we're going to do get this weather stripping all pulled up here and you're going to press the wire into the weatherstrip then we're going to lift up this portion just like so get my head up right over here basically sliding this guy down a tad bit as you feed the wire down so we're just tucking it into the weatherstripping make sure just like the bluetooth microphones when you're routing these that you don't pinch this cable because it is an antenna with a shield and the center pin if you pinch it you're going to lose reception completely or it's not grade the reception degrade the reception overall and the customer is not going to be a happy camper so make sure it's nice and straight keep tucking all the way down now everybody has their own way of doing it this is the most common way that is requested or done in the industry honestly and it's a nice way of doing it too because the cable is completely hidden so we're getting down to the end here sort of hard to see but now we're on the inside of the weather stripping so if I took that again perfect so now you can't see anything all the way up I didn't compromise the weather stripping at all I didn't rip it still looks talked now mounting the antenna I know it's magnetic what happens when you go through a carwash rip it right off so typically you can use some double sticky tape like 3m between the paint and the SiriusXM antenna which will be perfectly fine doesn't hurt it or you can use a dab of silicone I actually prefer the dab of silicone because it rubs right off the paint you won't have to be dealing with the double sticky tape on your pain afterwards so if you ever do remove the t10 ax now once we got the cable down here at the very end of the weather stripping at the a-pillar now we got the challenge of getting it between the fender and the second second portion of weather stripping for the door I'm going to do I'm going to tuck it see how just snaps right in perfect so you can't see the cable here now we're on the inside the door jamb now a lot of people don't like running in it through the door jamb which is obvious because you don't your door shut on the antenna a lot of customers are a lot of installers will actually go through the door grommet sort of hard to see here but you can go through the door grommet if you please what I actually do is I run it right below this weather stripping and shoot it right into the car because this lip comes right up so I can hide my antenna underneath here and do that right now so I'm going to do here is I'm just going to pull out the weather stripping a tad bit perfect take my cable route it through this way pretty long cable so you can have a bunch of slack left over because these cables are designed to where you can run it to the back of the trunk lid the back portion of the roof of the vehicle top of the vehicle wherever you want to put it so long as it's on the outside for Sirius and XM that's when you're going to get the best reception so pull this through alright so we have our antenna here in the jam and go ahead and tuck it into this weather shipping so we can go ahead and put the weather shipping back perfect now I have the intent on the inside of the vehicle you can't see any cables so now that I got the wire inside the vehicle the antenna I'm going to drop it down in our air a pillar location like we did in our Bluetooth microphone video on car audio 101 once it's dropped into this area a pillar location which will be inside the dash I will then run it from the inside the dash all the way over to our radio location where our Sirius tuner will be located we're then going to actually connect the antenna to your sec-1 module you're serious tune or XM tuner whichever one you're using from there if you then have your cable out of the Sirius box go to the actual radio itself so that way it communicates the satellite radio information text to display album art in some cases will be displayed on your navigation radio you're doubled in your single din etc once this is inside the dash it's pretty much left alone there's really nothing too crazy about installing these since they're plug-and-play the hardest part is actually running the antenna and getting it mounted or not we're good to go
