field and streams the gun nuts presented by Smith & Wesson safety security protection and sport today's make the shot I want to talk about a very very simple very common upland shot and when you walk up to a bird dog you know it may be a flushing dog was on a hot center it may be a pointing dog at some point come up bird flushes goes straight away and you shoot it should be the easiest shot in the world none of us should ever miss it but we all do and and there's a few reasons like like the trap shooters say they're all they're all easy to hit and they're all easy to miss and there's a there's some pitfalls to avoid here what you're trying to shoot this straight away shot and it's one that will save you a lot of razzing from your friends no one likes to miss this one what I'll always do you know I want to hold my gun carry my gun safely with the muzzle up as I'm walking up on the dogs but as I get to the shot as the bird flushes the first move is not at the bird but I read the gun down here so it's ready and they can come pop its muzzle under the bird and make the shot and so it looks a little bit like this I'll I'll be here first move is here a little step then comes down and then up you've got a lot of time a lot of people missed this shot for shooting too quickly you shoot too quickly as chances are you gonna miss you're gonna shoot the bird up too badly you might miss by just a little bit and break a wing it's a lot better to take your time let it get out let your pattern open up and most of these birds if it flushes at your feet it takes a long time for if we get out to 20 yards a lot longer than you think so you can take your time and that you know I want to make sure Freddie and I see the bird clearly and then move the gun to it even want to sip the shot like this one walking in like this Paul take a shot that way the gun again once I've got it down here the other thing is that it allows me moving the gun down here where it's ready and it's just a little bit under my arm I can move it out and up and keep it from tangling up and light my vest or my shirt as the bird comes up Blake this time just pull it you know don't don't wait for me to call it just kind of pull it randomly as I'm walking in so sometimes you'll do it like that and say that first move is a little step with this foot bring the gun down even if you got it up here and make the shot that way so really the key to it I think is to bring your gun down take your time and that takes time bird flushing at your feet is a startling thing and I just that just takes experience but from there bring your gun down get ready for the shot see the bird keep the muzzle under it off the gun and that's how you make the shot
