well I there I'm Jen from the roving crafters and it's Sunday so that makes this Sunday stitch and this Sunday we're going to talk about how to make the Garter stitch tab the knitted triangular-shaped shawl starts from of course not every single shawl will start this way but the majority of ninja shawls particularly the ones that are the triangle shapes and they start from the V the neck edge and work their way out and down well this this is the neck edge this is how they start with this little garter stitch tab and once you have finished your shawl they're big long pretty lacy usually shawl you'd be hard-pressed to find that garter stitch tab but here it is on a fingering weight it's right here it serves as the very beginning and you'll usually have this Center spine of stitches going down the middle and that comes directly off the center of your garter stitch tab the Garter stitch tabs are sort of made a little differently you have to kind of what I always call go off the rails and find how to get these nine stitches and not every one is nine stitches but most of them are so those are the examples that I'm going to be making for you today let's get started on a brand new one okay let's get started on a new one I'm gonna cast on three little stitches and I'm going to cast them on fairly loosely you'll save yourself some headache and some fuss later on if you make this cast on edge a little loose because very soon you'll be picking up picking up and knitting three stitches off of this cast on edge so loose is better then most instructions will tell you to knit six rows or they might say knit up three ridges which you're going to need is three of those garters stitch ridges so - there's my first row I'm gonna add five more the hair is my sixth row with my very fiddly cord in the way and you know I'm gonna talk about how these fiddly cords he's big long so of course when circular needles can be an impediment when you're trying to make your garters to stab well done with knitting my six rows here but I'm not done yet this is your tab when they say the Garter tab there it is and you need to end up with nine stitches on your needle and here are your first three the other six come from the sides usually the instructions will say something like pick up six stitches from the edges and they might give you a clue and say pick up three from the edge and three from the cap three from the cast on here we go stretch this out some you're going to want to pick up a stitch in between the riches of all three starting with the first one and I like to go through two loops on the side to do my pick up a knit skip this Ridge go down in between the next Ridge and skip the ridge and go in between okay now I'm up to six I'm looking sort of lopsided 1 2 3 4 5 6 and the last three you have to come from this edge which was your cast on turn it sideways I'm sure you can see that little cast on edge go through one I don't know if you can tell but I've got my tail and I'm sort of holding in another way don't want it ticket needed up in anything yet to come here and the third one with you that's the tail where you're working yarn here now you have a little garter stitch down with nine stitches and you're ready to go you're ready to work your shawl pattern as I said this can be a little filly and I've worked with a lot of knitters and I think that the biggest impediments are making one of these isn't that you don't know how to knit six rows of course you do and it's not that you don't know how to pick up an it he said it's so fiddly and fussy so if you have double pointed needles it might be good to start not with a circular that you're gonna use to knit most of your shawl but on a set of double points like you for you I have a said ready to go here we go with my little garter stitch tab already made up let's get started make a second one here's my working yarn you know hold that working yarn off to the right and use this side in this side to pick up six more stitches start with a new double point three and then for the third double point do the cast on edge maybe you don't need this trick but I think anything you can do to save yourself a little headache normal fuzziness is always a good thing there now you have your nine stitches and you kiss with your working yarn over here let's get you facing in the right direction working down right here and I think that you from here you can certain lean it on to your circular shawl needles okay well hope that gets you started making your garnishes stab and on your way to making a whole bunch of lovely new shells for yourself till next time
