all right so I wanted to show you how I'm build a hybrid worm bin and so here come on in and I'll take you along for the journey the width at work first thing we're going to do is we're going to take this lid and you're going to cut out the center of this lid here and then to the right side of each one of these spaces right here along that supporting member we're going to cut down cut this line and we're going to divide this ring up into four individual pieces so that's the first thing we're going to do and for me what I was doing was I was just starting with a knife and and cutting it out like that and it worked fairly well for the most part not the easiest thing and I'm definitely it's probably not the safest thing so you know do this at your own risk but it does work alright now this you need to set it aside because we're going to use it later for a template so that gets set aside and you cut out cut this ring into the four sections and after you've marked it off and so again I'm not suggesting that this is the safest method but it is working for me so now we have the four individual sections cut out what we're going to do is we're going to flip them over and we're going to try to marry them back together in a way that will give us the ring that we're looking for now remember we're trying to build a ring that the worms will not be able to climb through and so in doing that we need to make sure that we get as much pressure pushing out as possible so I've taken a little screw and we're going to try to screw this or we are going to screw it there and we're going to do this with all four pieces all the way around alright now that we have all these four pieces screwed to the respective corners what we need to do is look at where this tab is and if you take a look right here you can see that this section is holding this section from coming against the side so what we want to do is mark this off and cut off this piece of plastic so it can set back against the side a little bit further and the same way goes for this side over here and again the goal is to allow this area right here to set back against this edge a lot more efficiently which we've done so the next thing we're going to do is we're going to go along here and if I don't know if you've seen my video a while back where I was repairing the plastic on the mower well we're going to do the same thing along these seams that we've cut in the ring all right so the next step in this process is to bind these four pieces together into the ring and I was just using these zip strips and I was starting on the bottom so that the the ugly head would be on the underside and I'm zipping this together as tight as what I can after putting one together I just decided that there was no need for an epoxy because this holds itself very well and really all we're doing is we're trying to prevent the the worms from climbing up and going through the crack between the tub and the lid so this holds real well and then I'll go in here and I'll snip off the tails that are hanging off there and we'll go on to the next step now that we have the ring all put back together I've removed the screws and I've cleaned up all the little tails hanging off of the zip strips and it fits in there nicely and it's serving the purpose exactly like it was intended to serve now you may at some point some different lids you may have to cut a little trim a little bit along this edge to get it to drop down below the rim of the tub and in some cases not because remember you're going to be putting the final lid on top of this so that's really all there is to it we set that aside now turn over the bin that the worms are going to be in and mark out a cross on the bottom of this and use a knife or whatever you're using to cut these squares out and leave the cross remaining there so what I did is I started out like this right here in the middle and work my way to the edge you stop about right there leave part of this curve here and that gives it strength and then as you come towards this corner cut up to a point right here on that corner and you'll see why as soon as I cut this out it's basically so that the worm tea can all drain out from the lowest point around the edge and for strength purposes it's better to put that lowest point at the corner like that so now when this is turned over the lowest point will be at all four corners and there will be a curve in here for strength to support so now that I have all four of these sections cut out you can see that the corners come all the way back to the low point on the tub when it's turned over we are ready to cut out the grade it's going to fit in the bottom of this to keep the dirt from all falling through and remember I said the Savior the lid here's where you're going to need it where you've cut out the top of that lid you're going to use that lid as a template because it fits perfectly in the bottom of that tub or at least mine did so now what I've done is I've used a marker already marked it out and drawn around that lid and you need to and yeah you know honestly I don't know the best way to cut these things they're a bear they're real brittle and weak so I found these snips and I just it makes a mess but what I found is they seemed to do the job all right so now you have Minister great that fits in the bottom and then the next thing that you want to do is want to have some way to hold this thing up out of the tub what I came up with was I got it's a half inch CPVC and drilled a 5/8 inch hole here which is slightly smaller than this --see PVC and put one on each side all the way through and you'll see after you know it's so tight that there's really no need to put anything on the end to keep it from pull it back out so once you have that in place you have the basic tub done for the top and this was just this lid I got a bad lid when I was at the store and what will make do with what we have but it just doesn't it's not nearly as well molded as what the first one was and then you're going to want to use something to block up the middle on the underside of this and so what I've done here is just taken one-inch pieces of styrofoam and cut an angle on them I glued them together with a silicon and this is to prop it up in the bottom and also to give the worms something to if they fall down into this area where there's a lot of water it gives them something to climb up back into the their habitat with so you can go ahead and make that and get that knocked out and then the next thing is going to be your top lid which is the lid goes on here and you're going to want to give it some ventilation holes so what I did is marked out this lid at two inches on center and then what you'll do is you'll drill a 1/8 inch hole and the reason why you're going to want to use 1/8 inch holes is because for the most part one of the holes are small enough that most worms don't crawl out of it and just in case they would get past your your ring that you've already created there so I'm going to go ahead and drill this and then we'll be done with the lid and then I'll come back to look what I found at Walmart the other day this lamp right here I don't have a bulb in it yet but it's a clip lamp and I picked that thing up for $5 on clearance the other day I think it was $20 originally I digress yes I go to Walmart but oh my gosh you know I couldn't pass that up so I brought that thing home and hopefully I can use that to add you know a spotlight somewhere where I need it you know if I'm running into any problems all right now back to your regular programming so now that we have our lid done we have our worm escape ring completed and this idea was from Larry Hall or Larry Hall's brother but I'll put his channel link in the description below we have our PVC @c PVC tubes that are put in here which support this and hold it up so the air can flow all the way around this top tub and get in there and really allow the air to move in this worm habitat we've got our worm ladder and middle support done you can use any material really for that we've got our great at the bottom complete the bottom cross is cut in the bin the section down there in the bottom the only thing left for us to do is to go around and first of all we want to put a spigot on here so what we've done is we laid out where the spigot could go the lowest and still get a seal with an o-ring and we picked up this spigot at Lowe's and I honestly have no idea what this thing's for or even called but the goal is that we put an o-ring on here stick it in and run the bolt all the way up on the backside to suck it down tight and then just for clearance purposes we're going to cut this thing off right here we also need to above the waterline wherever the waterline is going to be is to go around the base and I drilled 1/8 inch holes or my buddy Darryl Griffin I'll put a link to his Google+ profile down in the description but my buddy's been helping me and he drilled out these holes at 1/8 inch holes 2 inch on center all the way around and you can lay that out on the inside and really then the only thing left now is to put in our spigot all right so now with the spigot installed you've got the o-ring on it and then on the backside you have that that nut we've cut off that section on the back side of the you know that stuck out there really don't know what that was for I don't even know the function of those things but I've done with that and I think our worm bin is complete so what you'll do is you'll put this worm ladder in the bottom set your top bin on put in your material that you're going to start your start your worms in you might even want to put down a piece of well maybe some newspaper or something like that on the bottom initially just so that that your dirt doesn't fall through until they time to start to digest everything and go through it but then you can start to feed your worms on top you'll put your worm retention ring in and your lid goes on top and now you have a one bin that's very compact it's fully functional it allows you to get worm tea out of the bottom it has good air flow because air can flow all the way down the sides through the top through the bottom and you know it's just something that and it's aesthetically pleasing you know it's not ugly when you're using bins like this I'm really hoping that this works well on the red wigglers and the Alabama jumpers that I've got ordered well the the red wigglers are ordered the alabama jumpers are not but i hope this has been helpful if it's been helpful share it with somebody so that they can benefit from it and please don't forget to give me a thumbs up or like this video and let's all work together to change the world god bless you all
