everyone this is Heidi gusted with another knitting tutorials for you in this video I'm going to walk you through how to work staggered slip stitches to form a really cute chevron repeating pattern to work this stitch you're going to need to cast on a multiple of six stitches so for demonstration sake I have 12 stitches cast on my needle here and what we're going to do is work a repeat of 14 rows to accomplish what we're looking at in this swatch right here so you can see the Chevron nature of the zig zagging of the slip stitches and that happens over fourteen rows like I said so let's get started so we're going to start with Row one and what we're going to do is knit four stitches like so so what knit one two three and four next what we're going to do is bring our working yarn to the front and slip two stitches with the yarn in front and then we'll repeat that one more time so knit four and slip two with our yarn in front now we're going to turn our work to the wrong side and we're going to start with a purl one so we're going to purl one and then with our yarn and back so when our yarn is in back at this point it's on the right side of our work because we're working on the wrong side row so we're going to slip two stitches with our yarn and back bring the yarn to the front and purl three then we'll repeat that one more time with a pearl one slip to with our yarn and back and end on a pearl three so one thing to keep in mind when you work this stitch is that you're always going to be slipping stitches with the yarn on the right side of the work and we're doing that because we're like I mentioned earlier trying to create the visual texture that you see in this swatch here those slip stitches are what form these Chevron's throughout this swatch really creating the entire visual impact of the stitch so moving on to row three which is a right side row we're going to knit two slip two with your own in front and knit two all the way across so we'll start with that knit two slip two with our yarn in front and knit two again then knit two slip two with yarn in front and end on a knit two before we turn to the wrong side of our work to work Row 4 row four starts with purl three slip to with yarn in back and purl one purl three one more time slip to with your on and back end on that purl one row five starts out right away with slip to with your on in front now if you're working the stitch in the round or over more stitches you might want to include an extra stitch on each end if you're working flat to make the slipping at the beginning and end of a row a little bit less awkward but again for demonstrations sake I'm just showing you this over twelve stitches so we're starting with flip two with yarn in front so one two and next we are going to knit four then again slip two with yarn in front knit four now Rowe sticks our wrong side Rome we're almost at the halfway point we start with slip one with yarn and back and then now we will purl for slip two with yarn and back and now you'll repeat that purl for slip two with yarn and back until you have just five stitches left which is where I'm at now on this needle then we're going to end up with purl four and slip one with your knee back so we're doing this because if we're looking at the right side you can see that this row started and ended with a slip stitch so what we're doing there is the repeat of our slip stitches has run off the edge of our work and so instead of having two stitches to slip like we have for previous rows we just have one on each end just to keep that straight for you guys now 4:07 we knit all the way across so we have this gap row which indicates the halfway point in this split slipped Chevron stitch that's a little bit of a tongue twister but what's nice about this break Row is it gives you a chance to reset and to double check that you haven't messed up on your slipping stitches in front or in back or the placement of your slip stitches because kind of like with color work this slip stitch pattern is all about getting those slip stitches placed correctly for the visual repeating beautiful impact of the stitch can have moving on to the second half of this stitch to the last seven rows of this fourteen row stitch we're on row eight which is a wrong side row so we're going to begin with purl two slip two with yarn and back purl two and then we'll do that one more time purl two flip - with yarn and back and pearl - and that ro8 sets up our second direction of slip stitches so row nine we're going to knit three slip two stitches with our yarn in front knit one knit three again slip two with yarn in front finish off with that knit one row ten we're going to start out with slipping two stitches with the yarn at the back of our work one slip to slip purl four and then we do that again starting with our slip two with yarn and back purl four next four row 11 a right-side row we're going to slip one with yarn in front to start and this is another one of those roads that starts and end with just one slip stitch so slip one with yarn in front then we will knit four slip two with yarn in front and then we'll finish off with a knit four to that last stitch with our final live one with yarn in front like so so if you're looking at our swatch up close you can see that we slip stitches to the right for those first seven rows and now we're working on flipping stitches to the left so now row 12 and we're almost there on this stitch we're going to start with a purl four slip two with yarn and back purl four and slip two with the yarn in back row thirteen is our last stitch of this repeat that's worked with slip stitches we're going to knit one slip two with yarn in front knit three and again knit one slip two with yarn in front knit three and just like in row seven where we knit all the way across the row for a gapper row between our slip stitches we're going to turn to the wrong side and purl all the way across and this stitch works really well for cowls if you're a beginner who has mastered slipping stitches or even if this is your first slip stitch project they're a really great way to change up just knit and purl knitting without having to master something new like cables or twisted stitches or more complicated techniques so it's a nice step beyond just knit and purl patterns that have a really great visual impact so there is the 14 rope we appeal on this blue yarn and if we look at this swatch you can see I did a cast on of 18 rows so 6 times 3 is 18 so I did the 18 rows here for the cast on and then I worked this stitch to repeat so 28 rows of this stitch looks like this and you can see the really nice chevron pattern taking shape in the form of slip stitches this stitch is right at home in Afghan blocks cowls baby blankets and more if you have suggestions for places that slip stitches look great let us know in the comments and don't forget to tune in soon for even more tutorials
