typically one of the most common areas that you find you're losing heat in the wintertime is on the bottom of an exterior door underneath here hot air from your house passes out and cold air gets in a good way to solve that problem is with an bottom door seal these are pretty easy to install you cut them to link they slide along the bottom of your door and then you screw them into place here's another area we can look at these exterior doors have a seam right here and you can see up top there's no light getting through but as we go further down the gap increases and there's light getting through and that means that air is getting through so once again he can escape and cold air can come in here they have weather stripping it's a little bit corrupted but it's permanent weather stripping that is fixed to the doorframe what we're going to do is supplement that by adding extra weather stripping along the door itself so we're going to take the weather stripping put it right there at the edge of the door and make sure that we stay in line with the outside edge of the door it's just gently putting it in place and running her hand along it to make sure that it's sticking securely to the door that's good let's close the door and see how our seal worked out there we go well there you have it there was light that used to come in through here it isn't anymore which means that there's no air passing through you'll want to check for gaps and cracks around windows and doors water can settle into these cracks refreeze and cause further damage also gaps like this let hot air out and cold air in costing you lots of money thing you'll want to do is scrape off all the old caulk you can just use a scraper for this you'll want to use a weatherproof silicone based caulk all you do let's just slide it right down be sure to fill that gap then just use a scraper or your finger to smooth it out by doing these quick and easy tips you can better prepare your home for those winter months thanks for watching be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel
