so let us examine the way that we are going to tune a snare drum snare drum is definitely one of the drums that we hit the most in almost every style of playing whether it be school band marching band concert band jazz band rock band with your friends learning tunes we need to have a good sounding snare drum there's no point in also spending like eight hundred dollars on a good drum if it's going to sound something like this i don't know about you but i don't like that that sounds terrible that sounds like a 30 snare drum as opposed to an 800 snare drum so let me show you what i would do to get this drum sounding a little more realistic let's make it sound like a million dollar snare drum how about that i always start with the bottom head okay now the tuning principles are the same as they were with the bass drum we just have a much smaller drum to deal with the only problem is we have these snare wires in the way to create this i've seen a lot of guys do this where they get their hand under there after they turn the snare off get their hand in there and hold it up the whole entire time the problem with that is it it only frees up one hand to do the work try my little trick create a little bridge with your other stick now you've got two free hands i grab my drum key and i'm going to start tapping maybe about an inch from each of the tension rods okay i'm gonna go around again this time a little quicker could you hear the difference in some of them i definitely heard a difference here especially between these two right here heard a massive difference so i'm going to bring this one up now with the bottom snare head we can go pretty tight if you remember what i mentioned earlier when we were putting the heads on when it comes to tuning we can go quite tight okay so i'm actually going to crank this guy up a full half turn okay go over two full half turn across two full half turn and across over two pull half turn and across over two and that leads me back to my original so now you can notice that the pitch is quite high could you hear the difference there okay so i'm going to do the same thing again but this time i'm going to pay closer attention to which ones might need to come up a bit i'm hearing quite a few that are similar but i want to make sure that i can get them all sounding exactly the same hear the difference there i'm still hearing this one to be low so i'm going to bring him up a little bit now we're closer right so this guy's low bring the first one up okay we're getting there lower bring it up just a little bit small turn a little bit up it's not much go back around one more time he's still a little low hear that so they're all relatively close at this point okay i'm going to turn the drum back over and see what that did did that make a difference sure hope so turn the snares back on it made a difference but i still don't like it you
