Please explain how to make your amaryllis bloom again

Hi my name is Byron Martin, here at Logee's. Today, we're going to be talking about growing Amaryllis. These are some of the easiest plants to grow and flower in the home garden. Generally, what gardeners do, is they buy the bulbs in the fall, after they've gone through a dormancy; put them in a pot; and once the bulbs get warm and they're given a little bit of water, a flower spike will be thrown out of the center of the plant. We have some, here that actually are showing. After the flower spike has come up, the plants have gone into bloom, there's the initiation of a vegetative growth, or the leaves of the plant. And this is the beginning of the next growth cycle and flowering cycle of the Amaryllis bulb. So during the holiday season, or during the winter season-- whenever it is that your plant has woke up and started to flower again-- enjoy the flowers. Once they're gone by, we simply cut the stem off, and then we culture the plant and the bulb, and we move this into a window that gets very good light-- it could get some direct sunlight; an east or west window would be very good for that. And we're going to grow it just as if it was a normal house plant. Water it when the soil gets dry; as we get futher into the spring you can begin fertilizing it. Once the days get warm, and you can set it outside-- it's great to take the plant outside for the summer. And in this case, we would put it in a partially sunlit area. Doesn't need to be out in direct sunlight, but in a partially sunlight area, where they get good light, and you can keep your eye on the watering. The plant actually, is going to sense the decreasing day length that we're going to get as we come to the end of the summer, and it's going to, itself, pull itself back into dormancy. At that time, it's a good time to start drying the plant down; this will help force it back into its pot. The leaves will start yellowing and you can actually let them fall down, completely go back into the bulb, trim it off, and then you can store that pot in a cool area. A refrigerator's a great place to put it, until you'd like to see the flowers come again. And during that period of time, the bulb has actually made itself another offset-- or bulb-- to create the next flower. So, all during that summer time, we were actually creating that flower that we're going to see this next year. As far as fertilizer goes, you can use a granular organic, or you can put some in the water. Don't want to over-do it. I would call them moderate feeders throughout the summer time. Obviously, if there is a lot of rain, you want to supplement them with that. The feeding will help grow that bulb bigger and make that bulb bigger so that you'll get a great show in the next season, and that cycle can be repeated over, and over, and over again. There's a little bit of information on how to grow this most beautiful wintertime flowering bulb- the Amaryllis. If you'd like more information, you can find us at Logees.com
