Hello this is Dustin with Home Mender
here today to show you how to replace a pipe collar on your roof. also called a
vent collar. We did another video where we replaced a shingle tab. This time
we're going to do a pipe collar. Anytime you have a leak over a bathroom or over
a kitchen chances are the pipe collar is the
culprit. They start to crack around the rubber boot and it should always be
replaced. You should never goop it to try to save one. They're about five to seven
dollars. Let's just change them. Let me show you how. So we're going to start by
pulling the nails in the pipe collar. There's usually one tacked at the bottom
here on the corners. You can pull those up. Get under it and pull the nails. Then
you're going to gently tab up the shingle and start pulling nails out of
it. We've got one here. Gonna work the other side. We've got one on the pipe
collar in this area. There we go. Get that freed up and then we might have one more
on top. All of those gotta be pulled so we could get our pipe collar out. There we
go and you get one more on this side. Now, once our pipe collar's out we can usually
just pull back the shingle. Let's go ahead and pull this shingle cause it'll make
it easier for us. Alright we're going to pull that shingle, twist and lift off of
our pipe. There we are. Now we're going to take our new pipe collar and we're going
to fit it on to the pipe like so we'll lift up the shingles and twist the same way that we brought
it on. Oops it's backwards. Here we go twist it around. There that's looking
nice. Let's go ahead and tack this into place. Alright now it's not going to
move on us, we can put this shingle back. I'm going to put that right back where
you got it. Here we go. Now this pipe collar seems to be a little different
than the last one a little different size so it looks like we're going to
have to cut this small section out. We're just going to flip the shingle over and
then score out a little bit so it fits nice and flush up against the
collar. Just like that. Now we're going to work our shingle back under and this one
should fit in a little nicer. Here we are. I only like to tack the bottom of my
pipe collar. I say the less holes in it the better. Here we are. This one's in
good position. Let's go ahead and nail that one. There we are.
Now our next shingle down we're just going to have to nip the tip because
again this collar is a little bigger that's good to go and we're going to put
our last shingle in. Bring it up where it needs to be and make sure we put all of our nails
back that we pulled out. You can check under the top of each seam there. We missed
one here and that way it'll prevent anything from blowing off in the wind.
Alright we're looking good. We've got one more nail. Put a nail here. Alright our
pipe color is all done and we're just ready to seal it up, got our last nails
in it. We're going to take some roofing compound and just goop over the nails
and if you have a little thin tab something you can also just squirt a
little goop under the tab. Stick it down. Maybe that one too and you're good to go.
So our pipe color is all done, we're all fixed and best of all It's not gonna leak.
