Please explain how to: make a paracord jig (simple survival bracelet making)

hi guys everyday knife guy here and if you've been following the channel you'll notice that recently I started doing a few paracord bracelet tutorials and I had a few people ask me questions about the jig that I use to make the bracelets or make it easier to make them anyway and people asked and where can you get one can you make one and where you can get one that's basically eBay and that's where I got this originally but it'd be a pretty simple project to do having looked at it and so I thought I'd go over it with you show you how it's been made and if you want to make one up yourself you can really do so for five bucks or so it's pretty pretty simple cheap project to do so as you can see I have a bracelet on there at the moment and I know this is pretty self-explanatory but let's just go over the concept of what this is so basically you have two half buckles you have a male and a female already attached to the jig you come along with your opposing parts these will be the buckles that make your new bracelet attach those on you're ready to string together the base cords your bracelet and weave it on the jig you set the length of the bracelet you want before you start and when you're done you just pop these off and there you go whoops yeah not like that though and here yeah so it's pretty simple thing but makes life a whole lot easier keeps everything nice and neat and allows you to concentrate on how you're weaving so this has actually been made out of Home Depot yardstick you can see there it's even got the product number on it for you six one one two six nine and if you go look at their website and put that in it'll actually bring it right up and these are $0.99 in the US so pretty cheap and I actually read a few comments online when people say they'll actually give them to you free at the paint counter if you ask them the right way and you get the right person on the right day so that's worth the try and what the person made this has done is basically they've cut just over a foot either the start of the stick so starting at zero here obviously at this point and up to go into about 12 inches of food would probably be plenty I have this set for a bracelet for me which is about just over eight and a half inches that's a fairly standard size so you're never really going to need much longer than this so they've taken a fruit of the stick there and you can see this is actually a two-ply so they have basically taken two layers and glued them together they've cut a longer section on the base or you have your food there and then the base piece is longer you can see there is cut a little the remainder of the stick they have glued just you know their standard wood glue would do fine glue to your actual measuring piece onto the top of that so you leave a little space on the left they then cut three layers that which is an inch and a half long I've got three layers and stack those up here so you have a block four high and the base of your main Jake is is too high or too deep just glue the whole thing together they've actually used what looks like a brad nailer just to put forward nails through there and keep that block nice and solid at the other end you have a movable block and it is just two layers let me just see how long that is it's just two layers of the stick and it is two and a half inches long and they've just glued those together and of course that moves independently on top of the main base to adjust your length so once you have this block in place you're going to want to fix your buckles on they've just used a basic cable clip there and obviously you want the head of the join part in your buckle to roughly level at the end of this block because this is basically point zero for the distance of your bracelet so you want that to be roughly in line there and same at this end on this block the female end doesn't matter which way you do it of course you want that to be roughly level at the end of the block so you can get an accurate distance yeah so they put that on there the only disadvantage I see with using these kind of clips as you can't change the type of buckle I tend to just use this a small standard paracord buckle but if you did vary up between this and a larger one for wider bracelets or if you use any shackles like these which I use sometimes the metal shackle you might want to think a different way of attaching these so you can change them up between them won't be too hard to do you can just put a peg down in or you could actually bolt on there whichever type you want the treat and come up with some weight depending on what your needs are so a little modification there maybe but if you're making a jig just for the standard buckle this will work fine to make this block movable they have basically just use a what looks like a a miter saw to cut a slot or a groove into this down to about six and a half inches and you can see there where it's cut out of the bottom into that slot they've just put in a vault and see you roughly what that is it's about an inch now but an inch and a half vault there and it's just got a wing nut and a washer on top to clamp it down nice and tight if I slack that off so I'll just take it right off of this visa then go knock that washer off you can see that the vault they've use actually has a square collar on it which works quite well because obviously that slays if this focuses there you go that slides down into the slot and kind of keeps this this end nice and tight you don't need to use a spanner or sorry a range I'm in North America now you'll need to use a wrench or screwdriver anything to hold this hand but you know any kind of bolt will do I wouldn't say you don't even really need to cut a slot you could just drill holes for the diameter of your bolt every half inch or so because I mean how I just told you need really but I would say that the tip I'm going to give you next kind of will work with the with the drill so if you do a miter saw and do it that way one thing you can do when you just turn this back up again get this to fit on you go so one thing I do I have a set and say that's basically length of a slit that I need so when I go to weave I will tend slackness off and move it down you know a quarter inch so it's quarter inch or so short or maybe even slightly more depending on the paracord you're using tighten up their feed put on your new buckles feed through your core strands start making your bracelet and do quite a few weaves from the sand dome because usually I will have it positioned like this be weaving towards me do a few weaves down from this end and then it's lacking this off and actually stretch out the core so they're fully taut because it's hard to get it nice and taut when you're beginning the weave and it's easier to start slightly short and then just stretch so everything you know stays nicely in place and you should doing it that way end up with a bracelet that's exactly the right length and also there's no loose or sloppy weave it's all nice and neat and taut and where it should be so that's the way I do it the only downside the way they've constructed this jig for me is the fact that you so have the head of this bolt is protruding from the bottom here you can see so usually it's easiest if you can lay this flat on a bench but with the head of that bolt you tend to get a rock so there's various ways around that you could obviously rotor out a slot here the size of the head of the bolt so it sits just down below the surface at the bottom here you can actually see the bolt right through there or I don't know you could add an extra block on here and a block on here make the whole thing slightly longer just so it sits up off the desk there's no it's lots of ways around it for me it's not really a big deal at the moment I actually have I don't know if you can see it and shot here just that shot here I have a bolt into my desk so I tend to do is just slot this into there so the ball comes into the slot and then just tighten it down collapse the whole thing down to the - doesn't move around it makes it easier to weave so so there you have it guys we've got any questions leave it in the comments I think it's a pretty simple self-explanatory project as I say you can get these yardsticks super cheap you've already got your buckles sorry the need is a few of these clips or bolt a couple of screws maybe fix these down and that's about it so hopefully that helps and hope you enjoy they say if you have any questions just let me know in the comments and thanks for watching I'll see you next video
