Please explain how to make a hankie flower brooch, from indygo junction

hi this is Amy welcome to another IndyGo Junction how-to video today we are going to make the floral brooch from my book pinkie style I've been collecting vintage hankies for as long as I can remember I love the combinations of vintage colors with the addition the reproduction hang keys to the market I was inspired to create the book hanky style it's filled with a variety of projects from aprons to wearables embellishments to accessories and includes two full sized patterns to get started with a brooch you will need one hanky for your outer petals and another hanky for the center of the flower look for hankies with a colorful border and a nice finished edge for the petals for the center a hanky with a crochet edge and a coordinating color is ideal remember part of the fun is in the hunt we'll start with the outer petals using one of the reproduction hankies available on our website this part is also perfect for hang keys that may be stained or damaged to begin draw a line two inches in from the edge creating a square in the middle of the hanky take your scissors and cut around the line you've drawn discarding the centerpiece and keeping the outer frame after you're done you can set this aside while we make the floral center to create the center we'll start with a crocheted hanky you'll be drawing another cutting line around the hanky but this one differs from the first and that it angles outward as it turns the line doesn't have to be exact the key is to make each side a bit smaller than the last I'll show you start at one corner and draw a line about one in three quarters in from the edge getting a little closer to the outside as you go around after your third corner turn angle your line down that you're starting a corner like this then just cut along the lines and discard the centerpiece when you're done now I'll show you how to gather this crocheted hankie to make the center of the flower and our machine based a quarter inch from the edge of the hankie strip you've just cut pull up the basting together lightly just as you can see here now take the gathered strip and beginning with the narrow edge start winding the fabric keep the winding tighter in the center and loosen as you progress after a few wraps pull a needle and thread through the base and make a few stitches to secure then continue until the entire strip is island s stitch now let's go back and finish the outer petals cut the outer fabric petal strip into three or four pieces they don't have to be the same length but you'll want to include a corner in one or two of the pieces hand or machine based a quarter inch from the cut edge of all pieces and pull up the basting to gather light Bay we're ready to assemble the brooch wrap the first outer petal around the finish Center and pin stitch to the center with outer petal right side up overlap the second outer petal pin and stitch to secure continue until all outer petals have been used you can also add a leaf to your brooch using a hankie that has a natural leaf design or pattern like this one try adding some light to medium weight interfacing to the back of the leaf to provide some stiffness as you can see here after you've cut out the leaf simply stitch to the back of the brooch right side up the final step is to sell a pin back to your brooch and now you have a beautiful rhythm style brooch you can look to the pages of hanky style for more fashion accessories made with vintage or reproduction hankies some of my favorite projects from the book include this belt which uses both stitched and printed hankies as well as a nice vintage buckle I also love the idea of making something as useful as an eyeglass case this is actually made with one of our reproduction hankies and the Serge edge has a nice detail you can find more hanky style inspiration online in Deco Junction offers additional patterns using hankies as well as an assortment of reproduction hankies our sister site the vintage workshop com offers hanky imagery to be used with printable fabric sheets as an alternative to vintage hankies thanks for watching
