uh it's big al again i'm going to show you today how to repair your stopcock your main stopcock now i've got a big three-quarter one here just just to make it easy to show you how to do it um obviously this is in situ in your house it's probably facing up and going up to your main tank and around to your tap in the kitchen always are usually fitted on the mains very rarely anywhere else they're a little bit tricky to do which is what i want to take it out and show you but not impossible now if you find that your tap is really stiff really really stiff to turn and you do finally get it off then a lot of problems are to do with this packing gland here we call it a packing gland see that i can put this spanner on if i tighten this gland up then it makes it really really stiff but if you turn it too loose it will spin away but don't have it too loose because it is possible then it could drip out of there there is a little washers thing inside there that seals that up it's called the packing gland i've got a video on how to pack these glands if you've got a little drip from there on this packing land we call it i've got a video on what to do on how to fix that okay um and it's on on one of my videos here on youtube um so just check my channel out derriton33 and you'll find that is there on there okay if i'm not doing that today what i'm showing today is if you've got a stop and you turn it right off and then you find the water is still running so you turned it off but you're still getting quite a bit of water running out of the tap where it's a good possibility that the washer in this is gone um or if you're in a hardware area it could even be the seating may have a weak cut across it so i'm going to show you how to do it fairly simply and it's easier to show you with it out like this than it is under my cupboard sink which is you know desperately dark and horrible so i've got this three quarter one invariably yours will probably be well 22 mil uh invariably yours will be a 15 mil stop crop a smaller one but this big version gives you a bit more of an idea before we do anything with this stopcock to repair it okay outside on your path and turn your main routers apart okay shut it down come indoors make sure the tap stop and you know it's off then we're safe to work on this stop crop okay now this is going to be tight get it on there i'll crack this already but it they do require some effort to get them undone so you will need a good spanner okay and just crack it down okay and spin the tap off like so okay so we undo this about now there will be water here okay there will be some water as you undo this because this is the bottom of the line this is a the end they've got a roof tank pipe as it comes all the way down if it feeds any other taps if you've got mains in your bathroom there will be water here so i have a little basin dish under here and collect all the water all right just leave it running until it finally stops we've undone it we've cracked it or undo it okay now when you take this out of here you'll get this there's the washer and it sits in that little house in there now as you can see this is a brand new one and where you can see that you know all you've got to do is flip that washer off of there and ping a new one on a lot of times when they don't turn off properly is because there's a cut across there and the washer split and when the washer split it just will not go off at all and a lot of times it is because that washer has got to split across it okay and all you've got to do is pin it off and pay 10p for a washer from a plumber's version put it back on and put it back in and it's job done but for users live in a hard water area there is something else to just to check if you look inside there you can see a nice shiny brass seat see inside there okay i'll bring it up to the camera now in hardware as there is possible for that to get a cut across it a little nick and if you do get that um then that is the time when you you probably need one of these um it's a receipting tool it's a tap receipting tool um but you can get them uh to reseat these i haven't put the right head on to show you here but you can see that that that thread size is the right hit turn it around get the right size cutter on your tool and just grind it out okay until it's nice and smooth like it is now that's only if you can see a cutting air and if you put your finger in you can feel it there's one in there okay put your finger in if it's nice and smooth it's fine but get your torch and have a proper look and see if that's shiny like that okay make sure if there's any cuts you get one of these they're not very expensive these blue cheap plastic ones are about 10 pound we might be able to borrow one um okay but then we just get our um attack basically make sure it's full back on like so put it back in and turn it on okay screw it back in it's housing i mean i've got the whole thing out so it doesn't it's you know awesome easy for me oh also to check before we do that if you see that little washer there okay there is a washer here i must show you um and that that goes on the back of that makes this makes the seal okay if that's dodgy at all then get some ptfe and wind it round okay or if you've got some hemp embossed white and just put it around the end of there if that washes dodgy or if it's split okay um i mean you can get a new washer but yeah yeah i think just hemp boss white would do it okay just a little thought and obviously don't forget to put the washer back in and we'll screw that back in there like so now that really is all there is to it it's a fairly simple job but obviously it's easier for me to show you like this but it's a bit more difficult in position because you know you're working against so many obstacles there we are done and that's you had to do a repair on the stop clock if your water doesn't shut down properly um that's it well thanks very much for watching i hope it's been of some use to you um derek and 33 is my channel please feel free to subscribe and thanks for watching
