hello friends and welcome back to Swift lessons for another lick of the week tutorial and today's session I'm gonna be showing you how to make basic chords sound amazing use the support variations hammer-ons pull-offs and hybrid cross picking I got all the tabs available for you as always at patreon.com slash smith lessons you can become a one-dollar supporter there and gain access to tabs for all my popular youtube guitar lessons now let's get start with a full demonstration then I'll break everything down one two three four okay close look at the fretboard and also my picking hand getting started with section one of this lesson a review of the 1 5 4 2 progression in the key of G so that would be G major D major C major and traditionally a minor but we're gonna swap these chords out for some variations so we'll keep the G chord keep the D chord now instead of this Secord we're gonna play C ad 9 we'll throw in a little walk shape walk down shape then instead of the a minor chord we're gonna play a 7sus4 really beautiful shape here it's just a second fret of the D string and third fret of the B string okay so here's your progression gee d see at 9:00 walking down that's called G slash B by the way and then the a 7sus4 let's put those chords together in a rhythm then I'll show you how I embellished it in my demonstration one two three four G D why a 7sus4 okay so for the beginners out there just doing down down up up down up down down up down as you switched to the walk down shape and let the a 7sus4 ring just like that okay so what we have there is a very basic chord progression okay a very common strumming pattern with that down down-up up-down-up we call that the pop pattern or also at the calypso pattern and what we're gonna do now is we're going to learn that lick of the weak over D major and it can be a great example of how we can embellish basic chords once we have that then we're going to embellish the entire chord progression with some cross picking and hybrid picking okay demonstrating this lick of the week over the D major chord at full speed one more time memorize the way it sounds all right now that same thing very very slow [Applause] [Applause] okay let's break that down okay we have our D major chord Fred it real quick before we jump in I want you to know that your pick is going to be designated to the D string and g string but your middle finger and your ring fingers are going to be designated to the b string and the high E string okay that's very common for hybrid Pickers some players just like to use the middle finger I'm trying my best to use my pick my middle and my ring okay so it began with the D string open then we're gonna do a double pick the g string and the B string that's one and then we're going to pull off the pinky third fret high E string to that second fret okay and we're going to use our ring finger to pluck that high E string just like that a pull off practice that over and over again the D string our double pluck and our pull off then once you have that down grab the B string third fret there right there that's a very nice embellishment that you can throw it over top of a lot of different rhythms okay well we have safar one more time okay next we're gonna play okay so I hammered the middle finger down on the high E string second fret and then pulled it off remember when you're doing pull offs you're actually pulling down plucking the string okay so far you have alright then go to the b-string again back to the g string and then to the b screen that's the entire lick one more time a little bit faster and full-speed okay practice that over and over again get it into your muscle memory then we'll be ready to attack the entire chord progression okay excellent work everybody now that we had that look of the weak down let's embellish the entire chord progression that G major d-major see at nine walking to the a 7sus4 chord so originally over the G major chord we played down down up up down up one two and three and four and okay up strokes coming in on those ends we're gonna keep that rhythm but we're gonna do a hybrid cross picking pattern one cube in three and four so a base knit the low e-string strumming down to the B string then we're gonna play e B G and then back to be be strong bgb beats Trump very often I'll use that cross picking pattern instead of that down down-up up-down-up pattern just a great way to embellish the G major chord [Applause] okay then we have the D major chord we know what to do with that alright then I'm gonna show you what you can do for that C major C at 9 walk into the a7ii sus of 4 we're going to pick it apart with a basic arpeggio okay I don't really need all my fingers down on this see at nine anymore I can actually just play the a string and the B string AGB [Applause] same approach applied to the walk down chord G slash B and then a nice long strum over that a 7sus4 okay you put all that together and we have okay congrats everybody you're ready to practice our devil and thanks so much for checking out this look of the week tutorial remember when you're practicing these types of things you have to go slow build
