hey I'm captain Ricky wheeler and today I want to show you how to make a crank on quick change pin rig that we use my rollin Fortuna now here in Atlantic when we're trolling for tuna you don't only get so many shots a day so you want to make sure that you're able to get your baits right back in order as quickly as you can once you get on a school you get covered up your fish in the boat pop that hook gallon with a quick change pin rig takes you 10 seconds or less to put a new value on put you back in the water and get another bite so it's extremely important if you want to rack up numbers of tuna to use a pen rake the other thing that's very important when you're using a crank on penry is you want to use 30-foot a liter and fluorocarbon leader the HFA rules allow for 30-foot a liter and I always try to stay compliant with actually FAA rules so when I tournament fish nothing is different and also if I get a record it's coming on record books so you're allowed three for the liter when you use them more than 20 pound test in salt water the reason I use fluorocarbon leader is for three reasons one reason is light passes through it much easier so that makes it very difficult for fish to see in the water it doesn't collect light at all like monofilament leader does second it's less porous than monofilament leader which means it collects less water and it'll last a lot longer so you make couple pen rigs and you're good to go so less Riggin and more efficient all season and fluorocarbon leader leash the whole season no problem the third reason is it's highly abrasion resistant this is really important when you're catching bill fish or if you get to the critter or if you tune in this gets excited and totally gets cut hook on that mouth and those teeth are rubbing on the line it's gonna hold up and they're gonna catch that fish so all those things are very important but something that's extremely important when you're using a crank on leader is to have the right rod you want to ride with big roller guides because you're gonna be cranking on a swivel right onto your reel and you don't want that to get caught up when it's going in and out of your your rod having a lot when you use a router ring guides and you're trying to swivel one off the ring guards are big it's not so bad but they do get caught up so around with big roller guides you have no problems and it does a great job so having all that line the water without snaps level also give the fish nothing no homing in on except for your bait and when it's fluorocarbon leader they'd have a hard time seeing that line so all they don't see is your bait in the Lord and they're gonna eat it so this is how you make your crank on quick change pin rate all right so when you're making your crank on pin raise you need quite a few things so I always try to make a whole bunch at once and I always try to make them when it's a blow day like today I'm blown out so I'm gonna make a whole bunch of rings you can also do it before the season starts do it while you're watching TV or Sunday football I mean whatever you like to do and relax this is very relaxing I think anyway but well you want to start with today I want to use a hundred thirty pound seaguar fluorocarbon leader and with that fluorocarbon leader I use the 1.3 B crimps and for the hook end I use the 1.6 is because what we're gonna be doing is gonna be putting number nine wire through the crimp to create the pin you also need I always use Scrope our souls are 30 pound aren't 30 pounds plenty this these things are great they're low-profile they're small they go in and out your guides very easily and I get to have them break wood so also you need to lure they're gonna put in front of your valley if it was something like a sea witch like this or Islander I mean whatever your personal preference is I just like sea which is an Islanders and I've had a lot of success with them in the past so that's why I always use also you want to use must add 76 91 hook I always use nanos sometimes I'll use a toes or a 10 out depending on how big the ballyhoo are but now I know is the perfect medium and it works for pretty much most size values that we use in return for tuna which are usually mediums two larges also you need your egg singers fortune waits for your ballyhoo I usually use a 3/8 or a half sometimes I'll use 3/4 but usually a half for three days thousands plenty and I help to keep your values something right now for tools I just have these to cut the wire just side cutters and I have pair of crimpers I need this to burn the ends of my mono so in case the crimp is a good it's mushroomed out and you won't lose a fish because of a slipping crimp and then a good pair of scissors taystee miles so now what we want to do to start here is we're going to take our 30 foot lengths of fluorocarbon leader and cut it and we'll be ready to go so we're starting with our 30 foot leader right here 130 pound fluorocarbon so I'm gonna use my 1.3 B crimp and just crimp your Heim 30 pounds for a power sole to it nothing special here just all you're doing is you're crimping it so symbols that like I said I like to burn my ends just in case for some odd reason the line wants to slip this will save a fish once in a while so it's worth the extra effort do it make it nice you don't you don't want to have too much of a tag in because then it's one get caught in the guys you want to get it as tight to the crimp as you can like so and then make this nice and tight as well so crimp this all together and when I do crimp it I crimp it all the way through I don't worry about the ends getting crushed or anything it's never been a problem the all the way through because then it goes through your guys a lot easier simple as that so that's what you do on your one end and then the other end you want to take your lure that you're going to use in this case I have a blue-and-white Islander junior here one of my favorites and just slip your leader right through it like so and this one is at 1.6 bead crimp I was talking about and all you do is you just I mean self-explanatory you slip away through the crimp and you take your number nine wire which I pre-cut here eight inches is plenty and you want to go right through the middle here you stay on top of that fluorocarbon leader there all right next thing it goes through you want to put both the fluorocarbon and the wire through your egg sinker which is your chin wait for your value this case I'm using three sounds because I'm probably doing medium value on this rig and you come up from under you want to go up from under right here and when you come back this is something that's a personal preference sometimes I'll come back and I go back through the egg sinker I'm not going to an assistance it really honestly I don't think makes that big of a difference but anyway going over top and then I'm gonna come right back through the crimp all right now write down a little bit so you got all that your water and your fluorocarbon came back through your crimp and like I set out with like the burnt ends I'm gonna burn the end of this fluorocarbon alright and then I want to pull on it to get it tight to the crimp all the way there and pull it so it's nice and snug and you just kind of snug up the wire and I always try to get it so the wire and a fluorocarbon are exactly the same so we have a fish on it's pulling from the crimp and it's pulling on both the wire and the fluorocarbon nice and even I think it makes a difference having everything even and the nice thing about this rig is having this wire here if you got a lot going on it will save you some wannabe bites because they tend to hit out in front and then if they start shaking their head and they cut this my four-carbon leader you still got the wire to save you so it's pretty awesome but anyway you have that all your on do now is you crimp it okay nice and tight there and you want to flip this wire right up alright so now it's up that's your pin rig and that's what's gonna go right through the mouth and through the hinge of your value and then you're gonna take a rubber band and you wrap it real tight you can also use monel or you can also use copper wire instead just the rubber band is your quick change rig with a rubber band you can do it like that it's quick simple and easy and it keeps your values secure so what you can do here is you can cut one piece away or you can twist it up to create your pin I always tend to twist it up because when I cut the one piece away sometimes I get a really good hit from a big yell fan or a big I they break the pin and I can't fire it back out and that's the whole point of the quick change rate so I get nice to twist it up like that and that's like I said it's up going up so it goes up through the mouth of your value and then I'll just take my side cutters here cut it short and that's about as tall as you want it I mean about 3/8 to 1/2 inch is plenty you don't want a whole lot of excess because I know if you get a white marlin you're trying to feed it they feel that pin they will drop you that part sucks when you miss missile light because your pin ring but when you're doing this most time your tuna fishing so it doesn't really matter and like I said rubberband goes on here flip the ballyhoo long Orban it up and there's your crank on pin rig so go out catch yourself some tunas with the crank on pen rig have fun
