welcome painters to another episode of ghouls painting tips this is a bonus quick tip this week and it is just on some basing and it's how to build a trench base so I will show you how to turn this base into this one and this chunk of video that you're going to watch is actually from my patron only series at the painting desk so every month patrons get to ask me some questions directly and I respond to the following month in a video which is usually about an hour or more long depending on how much detail I want to show so basing I went into a lot of detail and there is a particularly good clip on how to build a trench base in there so I have pulled that out and I have cobbled that together as this bonus quick tip for those of you who don't have a 5 dollar or greater pledge on my patreon page here's a little sample of what you get every month if you're a patron ok so we have the base I'm gonna put trench planking on here so I used one of these stir to stir sticks from Starbucks I stopped these in a package somewhere too but just go to Starbucks and steal I didn't tell you to do that so what you can also do with these you can use your flush cutters on these if you want to cut a nice even a straight bit and it doesn't look too bad and it doesn't look rough you can use those where you can cut it with your so I'm just gonna put clanking all across the whole base I'm gonna do is just cut the first piece I'm gonna put on is to cover the slat slot so that'll be the first thing and if your overhangs a little bit that's okay you want the planking to look a little rough it doesn't have to be perfectly inside the base that's okay I'll have to get a little bit shorter as we go and you can just score it too and break it if you want a nice on new piece you really need a little bit of a skinnier piece here maybe we'll put the sandbags on this side and put one more trench piece here score it make sure everything fits always do dry fits first okay now when we look at these and really look like planks do that they kind of look like popsicle sticks so we will take the hobby knife again and these look a little a little more realistic so take the hobby knife and then just scrape these nice even corners off of here gouge it in and like scratch it up and make it look rough absolutely okay doesn't have to be all neat and nice oh and if you do that great even better you can split that piece off and you can put it back we'll move it back on there so it looks like that one's like split from all the warfare so I'll just I'm just trimming a little bit off this miniature camera just reading a few chunks off if you want to you can take some of chunks Alexander do damage and distress the surface and Scratchy when you paint that it'll give you some guidelines of how to throw the scratches and everything on there so very easy stuff yeah don't be don't be afraid don't be exact about it it's okay randomize it maybe look rough food distressed okay so now we have our trench clanking using a camera you'd be able to see and we'll take some Krazy Glue now or CA glue I use all kinds of technical terms CA was just short for cyan acrylate and that's what all in his crazy news instant dry beans are just a side acrylate solution reacts with the air and because this one's overhanging a little bit on this side here I'm just gonna trim that off so that's a more angled like this just so there's not so much overhang and we can put in our parking on there without being too confusing and you can tell which direction is facing just a strip of glue no a very much of this stuff and all of this is going to get white glue and all kinds of things on top of it and don't put the planking on there straight it looks more realistic if you put it on with uneven the crooked because it it's hastily built in the middle of a war zone so it's not going to be absolutely precision perfect or anything and then this side wasn't sticking so I just squeezed a little bit of glue in there and then I'll just trim on this side that's the first part of Harrison Gibbs Basel I use Mod Podge is cheap easy to use white glue and it's nice and matte so just take a little bit of water about 50/50 night save 75% blue and water thinned down on the glue a little bit yes I should put it in camera okay I just use the lid of the Mod Podge so that it's a lot super thin but not super thick either and then it's painted on top of these boards this seals everything in and this will help your paint and primer stick if you want to prime these boards you probably can but I find covering anything in white glue like terrain or anything is generally a good enough surface to for paint to stick to so don't worry too much about priming is you can listen as long as you cover the main bath so glue you can go straight into painting them and the glue gives them added durability as well when it dries it's like a hard layer or soft layer of plastic give this coat of white glue come back to it so I'm gonna do some other stuff while we wait for this to dry and sandbags here a few things that you need some parchment paper you can find it in your grocery store in the baking section need a hobby knife you will need a sculpting tool with a blade on the end or you can use your hobby knife you need some sort of lubricant I like chapstick you can use Vaseline you can use water but chapstick or Vaseline works the best you just have to wash your stone before you paint it of course some putty I use the green stuff me too tight and we need one of other two other things you will either need a piece of cloth this is a shear dollar store piece of bag here but it has an appropriate sized mesh the pattern of the cloth will work good for the sandbags or alternately you can use a band-aid and just wrap it around your finger to get the texture of the sandbag so let's get started I'll mix up some putty and let's start doing some stuff and make some sandbags first things first because we're working on parchment paper lube it up just put some chapstick all over it because we're going to be putting the putty on here and working with it before we transfer it to our trench base so I have a little trench base here the white glue is just about dry out it so I'm gonna be able to put those sandbags on here right wait okay and I'll mix up some putty and I'll be right back okay with your putty once it's mixed work it onto your parchment paper into a flat rectangular to make sure that the ends are fairly straight if they're not perfect that is okay so I'm going to make this into three sandbags here make sure your fingers are well lubricated so that you can smooth this over without leaving any fingerprints on here fingerprints just ruin the entire okay now that it's nice and flat and smooth you just score it very quickly in two three and then you browned each of these make sure your fingers are well lubricated too with lots of Vaseline I'm just round out the corners and round them off basically make it look like a bag do this with all three quickly don't worry about being too exact because it is a sandbag so it's just going to flop over and as much of its regular shape anyway the entire point of this exercise is just to remove as much of the texture as you can one-to-one easy stuff ooh I need to get me putty my buddies getting really old and really hard to work with because it's so hard okay let me take the base leave our sandbags on the parchment take the base and then I'm going to put sandbags over here so I'm gonna leave one just hanging a little bit onto the base and press it down and again you know make sure that there's lots of vaseline or lip balm on there so that you can smooth all your fingerprints off and pressing it down give it a little bit of a press then we take our sculpting tool or in case you don't have one then you just have a hot knife and score all around the edge here looks like two pieces of burlap around and I'll zoom in a bit I'll show you rest spit up a little bit I'll do this one in real-time and then I will just zip through the other two so wonderful we have nicely the sandbag shape looks like a sandbag feels like a sandbag okay and now the corners just take a little sculpting tool insert it slightly in the corner so it looks like it has that stitch holding together [Applause] and lastly what you do need to do is take your clock again make sure that you have fair bit of vaseline or your lubricant on the cloth and make sure that it's like a synthetic one that doesn't have lots of fibers in it like this one here there's no fibers in it it's just you know it's one of those ones that doesn't leave any residue and then you just put it on top of your sandbag and give it a fair bit of pressure and if your putty is not as hard as mine which it shouldn't be if it's new you'll have a nice texture on your sandbag as well zoom in so you can check it out and there we go sandbag number one and I will just zip through the other two really quickly [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] so there you go we have some trench planking and some sandbags so pretty cool very easy to do just about anybody can do this so major Harrison Gibbs will now sit here and then I'm going to put the cat on top of the sandbags here so the cat will have a little more prominence than the studio one plus it'll look like he's in a trench we can even add some razor wire or something around here later on once the base is finished so that's that that's how to make some sandbags well I'm not just how to sculpt sandbags I'd say that's how to make a whole trench base wouldn't you anyways there is 45 more minutes of material in that one episode so there is more where I build some different bases and do some different sculpting and all kinds of stuff it's mainly just building the bases in that episode the next episode which will release in March will have me painting all of these and finishing them off so if you want to see more of that head over to patreon pledge five or more dollars and you will be privy to that series every month and be able to ask me questions these special thanks goes out to sergey shipov Olaf thank you
