hello viewers for DIY is here with an interpreter for everyone this picture ready here I'll be doing a demonstration how to replace the butyl tape on your vehicle's door don't forget to check out my website at www.clemson.edu/peach is such as Google+ Twitter Facebook and recently created Instagram profile butyl tape is a non hardening sealant which seals and holds your doors vapor barrier into place over time dust and dirt can become embedded into the surface either from age or constant removal of the vapor barrier the vapor barrier can then be no longer held into place with this scenario here I'm working with a 1997 BMW 540i a 39 body style and instead of a plastic vapor barrier which is found on most vehicles this is equipped with a foam panel barrier issues may vary between vehicles for this car here if the panel is no longer held into place when it does rain it will leak and water will migrate into the vehicle's interior obviously this thing cause more issues if not addressed such as damaging the interior trim mold rust affecting electronics etc first it is required they remove the door panel on your vehicle removal processes will vary once removed you will then have access to the vapor barrier or in this case the foam panel barrier if you find the one on your vehicle damaged these can be purchased at the dealer or local auto parts suppliers with this vehicle here I'm able to reuse the barrier as it's still in good condition remove the barrier completely from the vehicle now we have access to the old butyl tape which I will be removing the easiest way I found is to heat it up the existing ceiling using a heat gun which will make it more pliable then scrape it off using a body filler applicator the reason I'm using a body filler applicator is because I have an old one kicking around and it's a very soft plastic material so I don't have to worry about it scratching the paint you should be able to remove a majority of the sealing there will be a light film leftover using some form of degreaser or cleaner be sure that it won't attack the paint or plastic here I'm using an orange degreaser made by LPS applied to paper towel and then wipe the surface down until there is no sealant residue left over new butyl tape can be purchased at a variety of sources such as the dealer auto parts supplier hardware stores online etc it is also available in a variety of lengths and widths for this car I did purchase it from the dealer but if you're unsure of the width refer to your manufacturer's specifications ensure that the barrier is clean as well these tend to be a little hard to clean and compared to the door you can use the same method to clean the barrier too as for applying the new butyl tape this can be applied to the barrier or door first you can pull it off the Roll and there will be a wax paper on the one side which helps you push it into place and can be removed once you're ready to install the new barrier into place make sure the area is clean of any residue I'd like to give both areas a wipe down with some rubbing alcohol now apply the new butyl tape for going around curved areas the sealant is very flexible but the wax paper on the other hand may cause some issues therefore you may need to tear the wax paper around the curves follow the same area where it used to be located and press it down into place once done we can then install the barrier back into place remove the wax paper off the butyl tape and carefully push the barrier back into place push around the area where the sealant is located and we'll adjust any shapes around the door surface make sure everything is sealed up properly then reinstall the door panel this concludes the rest of my tour video if you have any comments or questions please don't hesitate posting below also please subscribe to my channel and like my video thank you for watching
