Oh hey guys Jonathan here from guitar tips weekly calm as you can see i was playing in the key of G or I was actually playing the key of who what was that that would be flat but it felt like I was playing the key of G because this trusty little capo so today we're talking about cables and you're gonna say I've got a better capable than this this is one of those little little ones we actually have to kind of cinch it down with the screw there I've got one of those nice fancy spring-loaded ones except that I really can't find it today using this older capable technology I guess all the nice new ones are nice and spring loaded it's probably worth if you're thinking of getting a cable get yourself a spring loaded one it's just a lot easier to use a lot quicker I suspect my friend pinched one off of me but anyhow the tricks first off why would you want to use a cable well if we're playing in G the strings are longer right you're down here you're using the open notes if we use a capo it's essentially like moving the nut upwards or it's like having a permanent bar chord at a single spot basically are closing off all the strings at a particular fret the cool thing with that is that you can really change the sound that you're getting out of your guitar playing open chords so for instance you don't need to learn all these funky different chords you can just continue to play your g core your C chord as you normally would write and totally change the sound of what you're playing let me just move it up here demonstrate again they put this at any fret on the guitar that you want it really changes the sound I just changed it up an additional key from where I was right now I'm playing the key of C so a few things first off let's let's talk about how you put this thing on well you want to make sure you kind of put it as close to the center of the fret that you want but you can but let me just demonstrate here this one of course I have to tighten up by hand which makes it a little bit more awkward but a good teaching tool I guess because what you do is you want to tighten this here how my strings aren't properly connecting with the fret there just keep on tightening that until you get a good clean sound out of each string it's not bad right otherwise you're going to get string buzz and things like that which you don't want to deal with so keep it fairly close to the senator Fred if you absolutely can't get rid of that string buzz then you can creep it a little bit closer to the fret this direction don't do it too tight because I will change the intonation of the strings it's like pushing it down too far right is it actually changing the distance of the or the the tension on the string if you push it down too far so the other thing you need to know is that when you put on a capo what chords are you playing well you want to be careful with this one because you can't play the same chords I mean you can you can say for instance you have a song that's written in the key of G say you don't like singing in the key of G and it's easier for you to sing a little bit higher in the key of a right then what you can do is let me just demonstrate that federer actually so your song is written in the key of G ok it's G C and D right but you want to sing it in the key of a well what we have to do is move this gene this gene here on the third fret sixth ring that's our root note for the the core so what we want to do is move that root note up to a position right well if we play it G like that where's we've got these two open strings in the middle that are clashing with everything because now that now they're offering so that means we've moved our G up one fret so sorry two frets in a whole tone so what we want to do is bring the cable along and follow that right and I'll just show you this per second actually that's an opening right so now we bring up the capo 2 frets wish I had that spring loaded one hair is so much easier there you go now we've been an eight but we're playing the G chord pattern or G chord form right so now you can take the music that's written not talking about musical notation but if you've got courts written along with lyrics right that's pretty common then now you can play those chords in their open forum but you've transposed into the key of eight because this even though you're playing a jeep court formation it's actually an 8 because you've moved it up the sea becomes a d the movement up a tone and the Dean becomes an e because you moved it up at all as well right that's not so cool it changes everything like you can you're used to playing in G and then all of a sudden you can do that and it just sounds it sounds totally different I find it kind of inspiring sometimes to give thee new ideas different things to play with so that's pretty much pretty much all she wrote on cables I think yeah have fun with the cable I think I'll probably put a link to a cable on this page if you're interested there only like I think ten fifteen dollars typically definitely as far as guitar gadgets go pretty fun little tool can sometimes inspire you to play different things play different ways and how all sorts of fun anyways enjoy that we'll see you again next time straws in here from guitar tips weekly calm I
