Please explain how to tune a harp

okay so now I'm going to show you how to tune your heart now first thing you need to do is make sure that the pedals are in the neutral position which means they're going to be in the center knotch this way you make sure that you tune it in a neutral and not accidentally in a flat or in a sharp which will throw off the steps so make sure it's just right there in the center notch and go ahead and start tuning now what you're going to need to tune is your tuning key and I highly recommend an electronic tuner now there are two kinds of electronic tuners this is a chromatic tuner and it is meant for a harp there are chromatic tuners for guitars don't get confused because those don't cover as many notes and you want to make sure you get a full range of notes now basically what you wouldn't want to do and especially in the beginning when you're tuning the bottom row of strings especially those wire strings I have learned you want to tune those from behind the harp now unfortunately because there is so much tension pulling on these strings that when you do tune them sometimes the integrity gives way and they will snap and you don't want to be standing right here when that string comes straight for you you learn that mistake once and I have so just go ahead and make sure you tune those from back here now when you start to tune the harp go ahead and find the right peg now these are the tuning pegs and they correspond with the strings on the other side and since these strings if you can tell our strong counterclockwise the reverse option on the back is righty-tighty lefty-loosey so in order to make this note more sharp you're going to turn it clockwise in order to make it more flat you turn it counterclockwise now this string is flat it's really flat so what we're going to show is if you take a look on here this tells me that it at about a g-sharp so we're going to want to really crank that up a bit now it's got to be flat and if you listen closely you can hear it adjust and if you notice I just popped that string so this is why I talked about standing on the backside of the string because you just want to be really careful now if you're playing in an orchestra and you're not able to hear too well there are two ways to take care of this problem there are accessories for your tuner this is called a pickup it plugs right into your electronic tuner and you can place it right on the soundboard now this has a little tiny microphone that's going to be placed right into the tuner so you can get a better sound and this is helpful when you're playing with an orchestra and everybody's tuning up and you can't hear properly or the mic on the tuner won't pick up and if you listen you can actually hear when it becomes the proper note now this brings into the subject of tuning by ear sometimes the tuners don't get all the ranges and when you're dealing with 47 strings on a harp sometimes the extreme note don't register on an electronic tuner so then you're going to want to tune by ear so in the case of like say my f strings which are the black ones what is up here at a double aught or sorry a single odd you're going to want to tune it this way so you play the bottom string that is already in tune and then you play the top and basically what you do is you tune it until it falls into line with the bottom note it's the same note different octave and you will hear it line up and that's how you tune by ear
