now maybe you're wavering a little bit on whether you're ready to graft in pattern and i'm going to show you how to do this how to graft and pattern now this is for people who have had experience already with grafting maybe at the working kitchener stitch at the toe of a sock but this is just going to be that next step so that you can keep that beautiful line going all the way across the side of your garment i'm grafting my side tabs together and i'm maintaining the pattern across the side tabs and there are some things that i have learned over the years about grafting now you're always looking in pairs of stitches and what i have realized is that there is always something the same when you're grafting and always something different and your stitches are either the same type or they're different types and your direction is sewing is either the same direction or different directions so if you have the same stitches then your stitch direction must be different so here i have a knit and a knit my first stitch always sets the first direction you go in as if to knit drop it off come back as if to purl now on the back it looks like i have a pearl and a pearl i have the same stitches so my direction must be different and the first stitch sets the first direction so you come in it's a purl you come in as if to purl drop it off then go out as if to knit i have two knits same stitches different directions first stitch sets the first direct direction enter knitwise drop return purlwise back i have two purls same stitches different directions the first stitch is a purl so it sets the first direction enter purlwise drop it exit knitwise all right now the next couple of stitches are just the same there's still two pairs of knits and two pairs of pearls all right but now i have something different now i have a knit and a purl all right my stitches are different so my direction is the same the first stitch still sets the first direction and it's a knit but it's also the second direction so different stitches same direction knit drop knit now i'll go back and straighten out my tension later i'm not worried about that now now i'm just trying to get the pattern of the yarn set all right in the back this is a pearl and this is a knit my stitches are dirt are different so my direction is the same the first stitch is a purl that sets the direction enters up to purl drop and purl again so you're only ever looking two stitches at a time so i have a purl purl same stitches different direction first stitch sets the direction enter purl exit knit in the back i have knit knit first stitch sets the direction and since they're different stitches sorry same stitches you're going different directions so enter to knit exit the purl alright again here we have two stitches that are different a purl first then a knit different stitches same direction the first stitch sets the direction it's a purl drop pearl in the back i have a knit then a purl different stitches same direction first stitch sets the direction enter to knit drop knit okay knit knit so that's enter to knit exit to purl purl purl enter to purl exit to knit all right here we have another pair of different ones knit them purl different stitches same direction first stitch sets the direction knit knit purl knit different stitches same direction first stitch sets the direction purl purl all right same stitches two pearls different directions first stitch sets the first direction purl knit okay i'm going to finish this up and show you what it looks like when the tension is all straightened out so this is my finished grafted side tab and you can see that i maintain the pattern right through that ribbing along the side
