Please explain how to sew a fleece winter hat

hello and welcome to Professor pincushion in this tutorial I'm going to show you how you can make this fleece hat I'm not only going to show you how to sew it but also how to create your own pattern based on your head measurement let's go ahead and get started let's go ahead and take a look at the supplies we're going to need in order to make our hat first we're going to have our pattern paper or just a large sheet of tissue paper or paper in general you can use we have some fleece if you get a half a yard that should be more than enough to make a couple of hats pins and needles some thread some embroidery floss some tape just the tape or paper down and then I have different ways to measure so I have a ruler my measuring gauge I have my flexible tape measure fabric marker pencils so we can draft our pattern and on paper scissors and fabric scissors next you're going to take your flexible tape measure because we need one measurement to make our hat so that's going to be the circumference of your head so imagine you're wearing a baseball cap and where it says in your forehead you're going to take that measurement going full around your head and go ahead and write that measurement down next grab your paper go ahead tape it down onto your table so it's not going to shift everywhere now so grab your ruler and you're going to want to grab your pencil I'm going to go ahead and do this with the marker so it's going to be a little bit easier for you to see what I'm doing so you're going to start at one edge I'm going to start over here about a couple of inches away from the edge of my paper and I'm going to draw a line that's going to be 12 inches in length so the full length of my ruler you can make this a little bit longer if you want if you tend to have a taller head or you need more room but usually twelve inches is a good place for everybody to start so there I have here is the side and now we're going to work the bottom of the hat so this is going to be the circumference of your head divided in half because we're just going to do half the pattern instead of doing the full pattern so in my example the circumference of my head is 20 and a half inches so therefore from this edge I'm going to draw a straight line it's going to be a squared line that going to be half that so that's ten and a quarter so this is the bottom of my hat and then I'm going to draw another line that's equal to the same length as this so twelve inches up and then you're just going to close it so you end up with a rectangle here's my finished outline now you'll notice that I did not add any seam allowance that's because we want our hat to fit snugly we're going to have a very small seam allowance a quarter of an inch and we're also going to make sure that we cut it out right in our fleece because fleece if we do it right it's going to have a little bit of stretch to it so that's really going to help so this is going to be the bottom of our hat I'm just marking bottom you don't have to do this on this side it's going to be a cut unfold so I'm going to do these little brackets cut on fold and then we're going to mark what it is so then if we put our pattern away we're going to know what it is later if we want to make another one and you're going to cut one on fold now the last thing I need to do is from the top of the hat so up here you're going to measure down three inches and then you're going to draw a dashed line and because I'm using pattern paper I can go ahead and see where my line is going to be one two three and then just mark this line because this is where we're going the top of the hat is actually going to be here and then this we're going to use in order to create the little pom-pom on top so once you have your pattern you can go ahead and cut it out and then we'll cut it out of our fabric when you get your fleece fabric you'll notice one way will stretch more than the other way so my salvage is going parallel this way and if I go perpendicular that you'll see it'll be really stretchy a lot more than this way this way stretches a little bit but this way stretches a lot more so I'm going to fold it so my fold line is going parallel with my salvage then this that we have cut unfold is going to place them this fold and you're going to go ahead pin everything into place and then cut it out so you'll notice the bottom of our hat is going perpendicular to my fold so the stretchiness is going to go right along with that bottom and we'll be able to take advantage of it you'll make sure to transfer your dash line that's at that three inch mark at the top of the hat if you forget just use your sewing gauge and your fabric marker and you can just measure down three inches and then make your marks so now we're going to start sewing our hat you're going to fold it so right sides are together this is if you have an obvious right side of your fabric or just make sure that the writing is going to be on the inside we'll make that the right side so you're going to be bringing the two raw edges together here on the side go ahead and pin it and we're going to take it to our machine and sew a quarter inch seam allowance if your machine can do an overcast stitch like mine can you can go ahead and do that otherwise if not you can just do a regular zig-zag stitch at the quarter inch seam allowance and then trim off the excess seam allowance next I'm going to be doing a hand blanket stitch on the bottom just as a decorative edge you don't really need to because fleece doesn't fray but I just think it looks nice so I'm doing this on the bottom raw edge so this is the opposite side of the top of the hat where we have the dashed line you can see my hat is still inside out because we can see our seam right here and I'm just starting at one point we're going to go around the whole bottom of the hat so I have some embroidery floss on my needle and I'm using the full six strands so I'm not taking it apart and I have a knot at one end and I'm just starting about a quarter of an inch away from this edge here to pull it all the way through then I'm going to come out again so I go back underneath right next to where my first stitch came out and this time you can see I have a loop here I'm going to go through that loop then I'm going to go a little ways away from that and it's okay to go through your seam allowance again it's about a quarter of an inch away from the raw edge and I have this loop and then I'm going to go through the loop and then we're going to and you don't want to pull it too tight but the first stitch is always a little funky and then I'm just going to repeat the process whoops pulled it too tight so I didn't have a little but I can just pull it out again there we go and just go through it so come from back to front quarter of an inch and then go through the loop so this is the blanket stitch and the circumference of the hat for most people usually isn't very big so this shouldn't take too long to do and it'll look nice and turn your hat inside out so now we have the right side on the outside and now we're focusing at the top so this is where we have our - line go ahead and grab your fabric scissors because the next step is we're going to take this whole top part the three inches and we're going to cut them into strips and they're going to stay attached here at this line so for example I'm just going to cut straight down until I hit the line and then I'm going to stop and then on a quarter of an inch away I'm going to go ahead and cut another one straight down to the line and stop and then do the same thing a quarter of an inch away cut down and stop now I'm just eyeballing it because I just want to do it quickly if you want to grab your sewing gauge in the mark every quarter inch and draw lines you have cutting lines so it's easier for you go ahead and do that or you can just do like I do and you just kind of guess and cut down to the line so we're never going to cut along this line they're still going to be attached at this point and you're going to do it for the whole top of the hat you can see now that I have a bunch of French here at the top of my hat now because I did my side seam all the way up to the top I have this little piece right here with a side seam and it's kind of stiff if you did like I did what you can do with this is just cut it off once everything is gathered up you're not even going to notice and we don't need that extra stiff part or if you don't want to worry about that just stop sewing once you hit your dashed line point from your extra fleece fabric you're going to want to cut a strip this is about ten inches in length and about a quarter inch in width because we're going to use this to tie around the top to gather up all this fringe so I have my hat still right side out here's the back seam I just have in the middle and just like I just showed you you're going to take this top part of the fringe you're going to gather it up so it creates a little pom-pom on top of our Hat then you're going to take the strip you're going to wrap it around the base of the fringe and I usually like to tie the knot in the back that's why I'm looking at this back seam right here tie it really tight and then I do a knot this extra part right here you can just trim this off close to here and you may need to play with the Hat a little bit so that the fringe is a little bit more on top of the head last but not least put the Hat on your head and then you can go ahead and fold up this bottom edge and usually this is going to be a matter of preference how much you want to fold it up and then that's all there is to it so now you have a nice cozy fleece hat new tutorials are
