Please explain how to: 3 color anodizing - spyderco manix handle with engraving

here's my homemade vinyl sticker cutting tool it just uses a drag knife I bought this from Michael's craft store and here's my so I put a ball bearing him there I took the rubber shields off so that it spins much easier and I made the cone and I made the base part and I put a little magnet up in here so that it'll hold this guy I think of course it will there here it there so it just keeps it up and then it's drag knife so that the tip is actually offset about ten thousandths of an inch or maybe 20,000 so that at a curve like say a 45 degree curve since it's a drag knife it would tend to put a tenth our radius on there because it's dragging behind the cut so you need a program that goes and puts like a loop you know a tenth ow or 25 or whatever it ends up being on every single corner so that you get nice sharp 90-degree you know 90 degree edges or whatever so yeah I got a program does that and you know mount this up right now and cut some vinyl some vinyl roll that I got from Michaels you need to cut a little section off whoo-hoo not bad paper tries to lift a little bit but let's take a closer look it's kind of gross looking it might barely pass what I'm doing but yeah boy that could be better couldn't it huh well let me think about that it might be better if I could somehow code it to just go along the outside and one pass and then line line line line and then just for straight lines I could code that maybe I'll do that try this again number two state by the work didn't work because I was cutting too deep I cut through the backing let's not do that all right I moved it up $5 let's try it again it looks good but I don't think it's really cutting through but let's let it run I turned it down too so it's only going ten inches per minute instead of 20 and this is a code that I actually wrote pretty much by hand it doesn't have those loopies that I was talking about but I think it should provide a cleaner result anyway let's check it out shall we not deep enough well yeah it just needs to be a little bit deeper no biggie what I want to do is be able to take off alternating triangles so I'm left with four and kind of a windmill pattern so I'll try again right here little bit deeper looking good they'll its again I think I got it figured out right here and that noisy crap yeah oops - and once think I can be more careful next time but basically I mean that works so the theory with this one is that the scale itself is going to be stalks of green and four four triangles of the umbrella are gonna be silver and four are gonna be red so what I have to do is mask them off with various stickers that I cut out a la tada so I gotta figure out how to get those onto here and have them stick so first thing is to dry this off using either compressed air and a heat gun but it's my air compressor just broke I'm gonna use just a heat gun you want to go too hot or else it'll prematurely seal the part but let's do it [Applause] [Applause] the theory here is not so much to blow the water away or to evaporate it it's to heat up the part enough so that it's hot enough that it naturally evaporates the water by itself just there was Israel heated apart better watch out for these drips on the bottom [Applause] theory here is that I'm putting on some stickers exactly on to where I engrave the locator lines or whatever you want to call them notice I'm putting on a pair of new nitrile gloves these are unused because you don't want to touch this with your bare hands or else as I said before the oils will get in there and miss meth you up man so I cut lots what I think I'm gonna do is like for the first one I'll take out top down left right for the second one we'll take down the diagonals the first color I'm asking off is silver and I'm masking it so that no dye will ever touch it right now red is top bottom left right white is diagonal so the first one I'm taking out is diagonal now of course I would use my paramilitary take it out you know Spyderco working on a Spyderco but a finally exacto is more exact so I'm keeping diagonals I'm getting rid of verticals Booya somehow I have to get these four onto exactly those areas I might end up doing it by hand we'll see all right I decided to do these by hand now remember anodized aluminum when it's still open it's a very porous surface and the Glee were used in these stickers get sucked up by those pores so fast that there's no going back that was a little off but it sticks very well yes it's not like you can pull it off and reposition it because they're on there for good you have to use a chemical like toluene to get them off okay just don't mess up you know traditional you know vinyl stickers like you put on your car or whatever they have that sticky backing but that won't work for this because I cannot let glue touch the areas that I don't want that make sense so I haven't really figured out a better way than this to do it there's some paintball analyzers that are really good at this and do super intricate stickers but I can't figure out how they apply them not like this but not bad I have a little bit of wiggle room so that's that's okay that's acceptable and then same to the other side and then we'll dye it red all right got my stickers on I've got the press down with a clean gloved hand now everything under that sticker will remain silver aka white so that'll be the white part of the umbrella got this side done - all right I got my red dye here now I just did some other ones before in red and I found out that eight minutes gives a perfect red tends a little dark so for the umbrella dark might be really good actually so we're shooting for 10 minutes now the surface is so dry and so porous it's gonna suck up color in you know seconds one two three four five pink you know swish it around call that ten seconds it's already getting late so yeah so we leave that in for 10 minutes come back and check on it all right now we're putting these triangles very delicately up where they belong little off-center but alright now you may ask what if I get them off center and the lines don't match up I'll do why it's gonna look silly what I'm gonna do after the fact is engrave see the engraving that's here already I'm gonna agree if that much deeper and much bigger so it'll cut through any any improper lines that the colors are making well then now for the more silver half of them are red boo-yeah let's strip this red off next so here we're gonna strip off the rest of the red so I got three three tubs here bleach just household bleach kind of percent straight-up acid this is more like the anodizing acid hydrochloric it's about 20 percent acid and then just regular old tap water right here leaving the bleach to long will actually pick the metal and cause all kinds and what the acid does is it opens up those pores again so that they can accept died once again so I'm doing my my toxic green formula here 30 seconds in yellow which is right now I'm the doctor because it's lighter than than the last batch that I did I think probably because we did a couple dyes on it all right so we're hitting a minute 35 right now that's probably about good so yeah even though I have you know this formula 30 seconds yellow it's not always always perfect I think the other ones are even darker than that after 30 seconds this is a minute 30 but okay it's gotta be think on your feet try things out and then I just three minutes in so just like with the yellow let's keep an eye on it 10 seconds is already a little bit green keep an eye on modify as necessary beauty on to ceiling just pulled these out of the sealant which means that these bad boys are clean clear to touch and good to go my only complaint with this set and once this camera focuses I will show you it's right underneath that oval hole right there it's a little bit of a clear spot weird I did not take just write it south of my finger right there not a big deal tiny little bit up here in the corner - I don't know if you can see that not a big deal but I'm not happy about it although for a batch of 15 pairs of handles and that's the only mistake I made I can't complain too much and hopefully the viewers eye is distracted by the awesome logo under here so let's peel these off and see what we have now as with most stickers the sticker comes off easily the glue left behind stays and the glue will have to be chemically removed using a chemical called toluene and it is a no-fun chemical nasty nasty stuff you buy it from the paint store I got mine from Sherwin Williams and they ask you all kinds of questions before you buy it you know what are you gonna use it for because apparently it's that nasty I don't know if it's used in making drugs or anything like that but so I told them well it's for stripping stripping rubber cement and or these stickers what do you think it's still got sticker residue on it so it'll clean up a little bit better but boom-shaka-laka-laka even the lines are good I thought I would have to go in there and Riaan grave every line focus we can't look at blurry that's better right yeah it'll look better once I clean off the goo so like I said toluene Sherwin Williams I think it was twenty or thirty dollars for this enormous container you don't need that much but that's all you can buy so basically I have dispersed this already into this little container notice the gloves you do not want to touch this stuff probably also want a respirator so I guess one at a time so you just let it soak and then I got a toothbrush and you just scrub the glue residue until it's all off it doesn't take very long if you're doing a rubber cement mask like for a splash you do the same thing to get the rubber cement on and then compress there we'll blow dry it yeah hello kitty looks so cool and then here's the other side with the glue residue still on it focus glue residue no glue residue yeah that's what I thought all right I got both sides done so now what I'm gonna do is drop it in the sealant again just for another 5-10 minutes or something just in case the area underneath the stickers didn't get properly sealed now that I have the stickers off I can do that here's the end result what you think of that I'm very very happy with this it's a lot of extra work but the end results speak for themselves it's incredible and the cool thing is it looks like a sticker but you can't feel any difference in height or anything I mean it's it's completely flush and I thought I would have to engrave the outline and the lines again you know in case I didn't get my stickers bang on you can tell they're a tiny bit off but I think it's well within the acceptable limits of awesomeness so three-color anodizing silver red toxic green super happy
