Please explain how to hang heavy things on the wall ● using "french cleat" method

hello everyone today I want to show you how to hang a heavy object on the wall now I've got this metal tray here this one weighs about 4 to 5 pounds and it's kind of a nice looking tray so we want to put this on the wall so we could put a cable from handle to handle across the back but then you'd see the cables on the end and that wouldn't look so great we could put a shelf across the bottom but that's another thing that we'd have to build and put on the wall so the best thing to do is to use the system on the back that's called a French cleat and it's two strips of wood cut at a 45-degree angle and they fit together on the wall and they make a perfectly strong device for hanging heavy objects right on the wall so let me show you how they're built and we'll show you how we're gonna put put it on this tray here and we'll mount it on the wall so let's get to it okay so here's our tray let's have a look at the back so we're gonna put that French cleat somewhere between the two feet on the tray right here that distance is about 12 inches and we're gonna make it about 2 inches wide so let's get that French cleat cut so here we have our quarter each masonite pieces of wood cut so all we've done so we've taken a four inch piece of wood we've cut it into at a 45 degree angle and we're gonna put one piece on the wall and one piece on the tray and you can see how this is going to work so this piece is on the wall and this is gonna be on the back of the tray and when we go to put the tray on the wall this will just hook up to it like that so let me show you how we're gonna put this the 1/2 on the tray and then we'll mount the other piece on the wall after that what we're going to do next is we're going to take half of the French cleat and we're gonna adhere it to the tray and to do that we're going to use ourselves some good-quality silicone now before we put the silicone on we want to make sure the surface of the tray on the back is very clean so that the silicone can do its job I use a bit of rubbing alcohol and that cleans the surface really well and the next thing you want to do is make sure that the 1/2 of French cleat is also clean and put your silicone on the back apply some pressure and after you've got that done you want to wait and let that cure for a good 24 to 48 hours now take the part that's going on the wall and drill three holes in it now the one thing you may be asking yourself is why is there three holes and why they spaced the way they are you're only gonna use two of the holes in the event that the cleat is slightly off level and you have to real 'evil the tray you can always take the screw out of here and use this hole to move it slightly and put another screw in the wall and you want to countersink the hole when you have a spot picked on the wall put it on the wall and use a level and make sure that the French cleat is nice level and make a small pencil mark so you know exactly where it goes now in my house I have plaster walls it's wallboard covered with plasters so the walls are fairly thick and I have found that drywall screws do just fine in my particular instance if you have drywall in your house you'll have to get some plastic plugs and some screws and that will work just as well so if you have plaster walls like I do just drill a small pilot hole so that the plaster doesn't split when you put the screw in and now just attach it to the wall like I said earlier this is where the third hole may come in handy if your holes didn't seem to go in perfectly straight and they're a little bit off and it ends up not being leveled then you can always use the third hole to read rill a fresh hole to use it to re-level it well I hope this video has helped and we'll see you next time
