Please explain how to crochet a holiday garland

hey everybody this is Heidi from the blog hands occupied here today with a crochet tutorial for blitzing the garland behind me is what we're going to make today it's great for the holidays or you can customize it with any color for any event you can think of you first up I'm going to show you guys how to work each stitch that's needed to make this cute garland so the first thing you need to know how to do is how to make an easy Slipknot so you take your yarn and hold it in your non-working hand leave a little bit of a tail then take the working end of your yarn and wrap it around your two fingers crossing it over then put the working tail of your yarn in the palm of your hand along with that initial tail and close your fingers then grab your crochet hook and reach through that farthest out loop and hook the second loop pulling it through pull your fingers back through and as you pull on that loop your slip knot is formed and you'll know it's a slip knot if you can pull the loop bigger and smaller really easily next you'll need to know how to do a basic chain stitch once you have your slip knot on your hook you'll take your working yarn and wrap it over the front of the hook catching the working yarn with the hook of your hook on the way back through and pull it through that slip knot loose then to the next link in the chain you use your working yarn again wrap it over the front of your hook once more catch it bring it back through the loop and you've got yourself a basic chain stitch the main stitch you'll be using in this garland project is the single crochet stitch and just like it sounds it involves working one loop as you crochet so let me show you what that means on my hook here I've got one row of single crochet done in a foundation chain of just a few stitches to work the single crochet we've already got our single loop on our hook what we're going to do is dive our hook into the first stitch so see that V that I'm pointing my hook through that's what you're aiming for when you work a single crochet stitch so we'll dive into that V wrap our working yarn over our hook catch the yarn on the way back now there are two loops our hook will wrap the working yarn over the hook one more time and draw it back through both loops at the same time forming a single crochet stitch so let me just work a couple more to show you that again we've got the one loop on our hook diving through the V wrap the yarn to pull back through wrap once more pull through two and there's a single crochet stitch and here's once more just for your reference diving through the V bringing the loop back bringing that through both loops and there we've got a line of single crochet the last technique you need to know how to do to make this garland is the single crochet two and one so it's really exactly the same as working a single crochet you just work two of them in the same V or the same stitch so let me show you how that works we are going to be working in this first V twice with two separate single crochet stitches for the single crochet two and one so we'll dive through that V and work one single crochet and then instead of moving on to the second B will work in that exact same one forming the second single crochet stitch so there's two single crochet stitches in 1 stich hence the single crochet two in one name let me show you that one more time we're going to work in this middle stitch right here so we'll put the hook through there and work our first single crochet stitch and then work one more in that exact same stitch for two and one and then I'll just do one more to complete the row to show you again here is our first single crochet in that last stitch and our second so if you look at your work you can now see how it's forming kind of a v-shape because instead of just working three stitches across our row which we had room for we worked six so now the piece is growing wider and that's the point of doing a two in one is adding more stitches to your work now that I've shown you how to do each technique needed to make this garland let's go ahead and make it so we've got a slip knot on our hook and we're going to start by chaining too there's one and there's two next we're going to single crochet one stitch in this in the second chain from the hook so there's the first chain and there's the second chain we're going to aim for that second form so we will take our hook through that V and since this is just in the foundation chain you've got to be a little careful to go through the V only wrap your yarn to form your single crochet and the point of our first triangle has been created next we're going to chain one and turn our work so we can do the next row to turn your work you just turn it like the page of a book kind of like a little twist or a pivot then we'll work a 2 single crochets in 1 stich to start growing our triangle there's only one stitch to work in so this is pretty easy we're going to put our hook through that one stitch single crochet once then twice in that same spot and that's our second row then we will chain one and turn once again and we're ready for Row three every row starting at Row 3 is worked the same so in the first stitch of Row 3 we will work a two-in-one as one and two and one and then we will single crochet across the rest of the stitches in the row in this case there's only one more stitch so that's pretty easy and will single crochet which finishes out the third row then as usual we'll chain and turn at the end of that room for demonstration sake I'll show you how to work rows 4 and 5 just so you can see how your triangle begins to grow again we do a two in one in the first stitch of every row 12 and then we'll single crochet across the rest which in this case is two stitches and last time it was one so those single crochet two and one zadin one new stitch to every row which organically grows your triangle row by row forming each piece of the bunting or garland that you'll have at the end again and chain and turn here's row five worked just like three and four but with a couple more stitches as the triangles grown there's our single crochet two in one and now there's three single crochet stitches left to work chain one and turn to get ready for the next row you'll keep working that row three repeat which starts with the single crochet 2 and 1 and Chris and go crocheting across the rest of the row you'll do that seven more times for 10 total times you know you'll be done with your triangle when there are 12 stitches across the top that you can count to take your triangle to the next level you can incorporate another color for color blocking or fun candy cane stripes for the holidays the first thing you need to do to form a stripe is to break the yarn you're working with first so easy you just cut it with the scissors and then you've got this long tail now I can take my hook and put it in that first stitch and so for this road just like all of the rows after row three of the triangle we're starting with a single crochet two and one but in this case instead of wrapping the red yarn over we're introducing a new color so you last sue that white yarn over your hook and draw it through so now you've got a red loop and a white loop on your hook and then leaving the red and white tails just hanging out the back grab your white working yarn wrap it over your hook draw it through the two loops to finish the first single crochet then keep working just ignoring all these tails over here it's the same pattern as before you're just using another color so I'm doing the second single crochet of my two and one and then I just simply work across the row just like it was any other row the only difference is that i'm working with a different color yarn than before what you can do as you work to weave your tails in and save you some time at the end is if we go back a little bit to this first step so you'll grab those two tails and can place them between the working yarn and your hook so you'll go under the tails through that stitch and wrap your working yarn light normal go back under all those tails in that working yarn or with that working yarn and crochet around once you've done that first stitch you've locked in those tails and you can keep working just keep working around the tails on that first row of the new color and this will save you a lot of work weaving in ends later it also pretty invisibly incorporates the new color without having to do a whole lot of fancy crochet footwork so to speak so as we keep working across this row you can see that I just keep sweeping under those tails and through the stitch locking those tails in the row at the end of the row we can cut those tails and they're there already woven into our work almost invisibly which is really great so that's how you do a color change in a crochet triangle I'm going to keep working to finish this color block triangle but then we'll come back at the end and I'll show you how to weave in the tails so we finished our triangle and all that's left is to leave in the end now we're going to grab our trusty scissors and snip our yarn then we're going to draw will do one more yarn over and pull that tail through and it forms a really convenient not that's one of the really nice things about crochet is how easy it is to finish off a project then we'll use our crochet hook to pull that tail through all of these stitches you don't have to go all the way across since it's knotted we're really just weaving in the tail to finish our work neatly and then once you've gone through a few stitches probably about half way across the row is good you bring your scissors in and cut it close to the triangle without cutting the triangle snip there then we've got a weave in the tail from the beginning and just put your hook through whatever hole you can find in the triangle and draw the tail through this colorblocked example is a really good one because one thing you want to do if you are working with multiple colors is to weave the tail into the same color so that no one can see it that way you can be kind of sloppy or just quick if you're in a rush because the holidays and a holiday crafting there's never enough time for it just weave in that tail in its own color section and just like with the other end snip the tail and there's your triangle all ready to be added to the garland all that's left to do is assemble your triangles into a cute garland so you just grab some of your yarn however long you want it to be as fine cut it and take a tapestry needle or just a really big needle thread your yarn through it and then do just a basic running stitch so just sewing back and forth to attach your triangle to the garland just really easy sewing back and forth through those stitches at the top I'm just demonstrating this on one triangle but for your Garland you'll have a whole bunch like the one that's behind me in this video so you'll keep sewing them onto the yarn like this and they'll hang really nicely on a tree or as a nice home decor piece around the house so today we've learned a handful of beginner crochet stitches how to form a crochet triangle incorporate colors and get creative like the garland behind me there's so many possibilities for customizing these triangles in this garland for any event
