Please explain how to knit a dogwood blossom

in this video I will show you how to knit the the dogwood blossom and the pattern is available at prolab neucom and it comes in two sizes this one is the larger one with larger petals and here is a smaller petal so this one obviously is more true to the flower itself the dogwood flower has four petals and it it comes in two colors white and a pink color this one I was playing around with the smaller pattern and I thought well it would look really nice with you know five petals on it and of course it's yellow which you know it's not really it doesn't really look like a dogwood but and this one is a large one and as you can see it does curl which makes it really pretty and if you don't want it to curl you can certainly block it out block it and and then assemble the petals and the bud so let's begin in this demonstration I'm going to show you how to do the the larger petal which is not very different from the small petal so the first thing you do is cast on five stitches okay and then now Row 1 which is the wrong side Row 1 we're just gonna purl okay so you purl those five stitches and row two we're gonna start our increase so the first thing we're gonna do is make one this took makin one because there are many many different increased techniques out there the this particular technique that I'm about to show you is the most I guess invisible increase so to do this you're going to bring insert your needle from the back through like that you're pretty much going to gather this one one stitch right below the one that's on your needle you're going to bring that up like so and just place it on your needle your left-hand needle now what you're gonna do now is insert your needle through the back like that because you're going to knit through the back loop of that one stitch that you just made and then you're going to drop that so that's a make one now you're going to knit one okay and then you're going to do the same thing again you're gonna make one see this is your working stitch now right below it you can see that there's a V okay and you're just going to go in and pick up the right side of that V and going to place it on your needle and knit through the back loop of that stitch oh my okay and then you're going to knit one you're going to repeat that again all the way to the end so I'm going to pick up I'm gonna pick this stitch up right here place it on this needle now the easy thing is just to not even take this needle out just go ahead and pick it up put it on the left-hand needle and then just go ahead and knit through the back loop and then you're going to knit one and repeat make one knit one and this last one is a little bit tricky because the last stitch the tension is gonna be a little funny but just go ahead and pick up that stitch I'm gonna knit through the back loop and then you're gonna knit that last stitch okay and now you should have a total of ten stitches two four six eight ten okay yeah and you're gonna flip over and purl you get a purl all of the odd number rows alright so now we are on Row 4 Row 4 is another increased row so first we're going to knit one alright and then we're going to use that same technique to make one it's going to do an increase 1 by picking up the stitch like that placing it on needle knit through the back loop alright so you've just made one or an increase one now we're going to knit 7 1 2 3 4 5 6 & 7 alright and now we're going to do another make one to go ahead and insert the needle pick it up knit through the back loop alright and now you're going to knit two one and two should have a total of 12 stitches now - yep now row 5 again an odd number row you're just going to purl all right now row 6 row 6 through row 15 we're basically going to knit the stockinette stitch so for row 6 we're going to go ahead and knit all the way across and row 7 I'm going to purl all the way across and you're gonna repeat these two rows until you reach row 16 okay so now we are on row 16 so we did our stockinette right here now we're ready for our decrease so for row 16 I'm going to go ahead and knit one and then the next one is SK to P which is slip one stitch knit two together and pass the slip stitch over so we're going to slip one knit two together and we're going to pass that slip stitch over okay now we're going to knit four three four okay and now we're going to knit three together okay and the last stitch we're going to knit okay now you should have a total of eight stitches oh yeah four rows 17 an odd number grow we're going to purl all the way across row row 18 is another decrease row so we're going to knit one into the SK to pee again oh just slip one knit two together and pass the slip stitch over and now we're going to knit three together and you're gonna knit the last stitch okay and we're almost done row 19 I'm just going to purl and you're gonna have four stitches left at this point okay now once you've hurled this row you're going to bind off your gonna do a yeah bind off knit wise so you're gonna bind these off so once you've completed your bind off you'll have something that looks like this and this is one petal and I went ahead and did the other petals so this dogwood flower that I'm knitting is going to have four petals and now I'm ready to sew these petals together to do that I got some yarn green yarn actually green yarn that is from the bud that we will make in a minute so what you're gonna do now is go in right at the base of the petal so go in from the back and then go back here this way insert your needle like that and just pull your yarn through and you're gonna do that with every single one of the petals so starting at the base oops and the green yarn I think I cut about total of maybe a foot long but I don't think you need that long of a tail for just doing this so now I'm just going to gather all the tails from the bottom of the petals and I'm just going to pull it through like that this part is a little bit tricky but it's not too bad basically you want the tail to be on the back of the work when you're doing this so the easiest way is just to go ahead and tie a knot the green yarn I wouldn't tie it too tight because you have to put your bud in the middle - all right so we have something that looks like a hot mess so go ahead and pull all of the tail to the back all right and okay so your tails are all in the back of the flower and now we are ready to knit the bud okay so we've sewn the flower together and now we need to make the bud so to do that with your double pointed needles and some green yarn or yellow whichever you prefer we're going to knit an i-cord for the bud so for this I cord I did I cast it on four stitches and passed on four stitches and now I'm going to move the work to the other end of the needle and I'm going to be I'm going to start knitting and this is how you do not I cord for those of you who've never done it before and an i-cord is basically just a tube a knitted tube okay so all right I took one row there and I'm going to move it to the other end of the needle again and begin to knit and I chords are very useful a lot of people knit I chords for purse traps necklaces bracelets alright so that was the second row let's move it over to the other end again and knit and you're going to do this until you have an i-cord that's about maybe 2 to 3 inches long okay so now the icord is about two inches long and I'm going to go ahead and bind off and the method I'm using is going to be the knit two together through the back loop bind off so I'm going to knit two together again through the back loop and then bring that one back over to this needle and repeat okay I'm just going to pull that through cut the yarn okay so you have your I chord know what you're gonna do is with one of your ends go ahead and thread it through your your needle or tapestry needle and you're going to sew the two ends together and it doesn't really matter how you do it it just you know just get the two ends together so I'm just gonna simply sew it real quick this this part of the work doesn't really need to be perfect or really pretty it just needs to be sewn together okay now once you've sewn it together if you want to even just go ahead and tie a knot here just to reinforce that [Applause] so what you're gonna do now is put the the bud through through the flower if you want the butt protrude more simply knit a longer I cord mine is about two inches long so I think that's a good size for it and what you're gonna do now is with all these ends you can just sew the bud and the petals like the end of the petals here you can sew it to the bud so there is no real way to do this just whatever way is easiest for you because you can't really see this anyway it's gonna be in the back so you're just gonna continue to sew the ends through the bud or from the pedal to the bud and you're gonna continue with all the ends here and so you've got them all sewn together see the petal is still you know you can still sew that to the bud but the last thing you're gonna do once you've woven in the ends and you've sewn it to the bud and everything you have these ends up top this I use to sew the petals together so um let's see which I'll just use this one okay so for this I'm just going to weave in this end quickly weave it in again there is no right way or wrong way to weave in this end you can't really see it anyway and then continue to weave it down the side all right so once you've reached about half an inch from the the bud this is where you're going to sew these petals together I'm going to start right here so the easiest way to do this is just sew it like so and I'm gonna go ahead and bring that end through the middle of that bud I'm just going to bring in all of the loose ends and and sew it and bring it through the bud see now if you just still have movement with your petals but it's attached here so now it's not going to be there's it looks cleaner that way so you're gonna do the same thing with all the other loose ends and of course you know this is optional if you don't want to do that that's fine but I just find that it's a lot cleaner looking when you do it that way and the end results will be it'll be something like this see how I kind of showed those together and this one I actually attached a pin to it so you can wear it as like a brooch or attach it to a hat and this one does not have anything on the back see how I kind of thread it every three everything through the bud and then I tied it together and then I just cut the ends off so all right there you have it that is how you knit the dogwood blossom flower okay and I hope you find this video helpful and happy knitting
