Please explain how to: shadow chrome black-out coating

welcome back to the dupli-color garage i'm brian and i'm brian today we want to talk to you about a brand new product from dupli-color called shadow chrome blackout coating and one of the latest trends in the automotive industry is black chrome and that that is where the chrome itself has a black effect now to have these done professionally you're looking at upwards of a hundred and fifty dollars per wheel but what we're going to show you is a kit that'll do it for less than 20 bucks for all four what this kit includes is a translucent black base coat it also includes a clear top coat which will add gloss and added protection we're going to show you how to do it right now now the first and most important step in any paint project is prep we've already taken the steps to mask off the areas we don't want painted and we've also thoroughly cleaned and degreased the wheel with dupli-color prep spray now one thing you want to remember is not to scuff the chrome substrate that you're going to be painting because since this is a black translucent base coat any of those scratches are going to show right through it and also whenever painting in any shop you're going to want to remember to use a mask because safety first now this is the black base coat and since it's translucent each added coat is going to add a darker appearance so you're going to want to lay it down fairly light but you're going to want the paint to flow lay it down as evenly as possible so you don't get any blotchiness as you're spraying just rotate the wheel make sure you get around all areas like you said you want the paint to flow you don't want it too light we are creating almost an over spray effect and lay it down as evenly as possible okay i completed the first coat and i waited about 30 minutes now i'm going to start with the second coat and then i'll start really seeing the desired effect that i'm going for remember i mentioned each coat adds a darker appearance so you have to be careful of how many coats you really want to put down you wait about another 30 minutes and then we're ready for the clear coat after that all right now we've already got our three light coats down we're done with the base coat the next step is the clear coat which is going to give you the added protection and gloss and it's going to help it withstand road debris brake dust things like that so we're gonna start with a light coat just to get it to tack and then we'll go back over with some heavier coats okay i got a light coat down just to get it to tack up and now i'm gonna go with a little heavier coat around here to get some to get it to flow some nice gloss brian and i just finished up applying the dupli-color shadow base and clear coat to this wheel and it looks awesome now this is a kit so just two parts it is you know like the base coat and the clear coat the clear coat is going to be for the added gloss and protection you can achieve this entire look for under 20 and you're going to want to wait at least three to four hours before mounting your tires back on the wheel now we did a wheel here but the blackout chrome effect looks great on any chrome automotive accessory or trim with dupli-color shadow yes you can achieve these results in your garage
