drink jugs I'm going to treat myself to a visit to grayshott pottery in the southwest of salary the pottery was opened by em tippetts in 1956 although it still makes beautiful earthenware and kills it is now run as a working benefit trust which enables staff to beat their rewards all the things I'm enjoying about my travels is finding local businesses and crafts that are still thriving today everything you see for instance in this room is made in the pottery here what I really want to see is how they make a traditional pot at a potter's wheel otherwise named is throwing I pulled up with top thrower Phil where they've been doing this then to do this now for seven and a half years yes I'm going or I taught myself how to do this come on throw me a pot what did they mean throwing a pop you think stirring the pot is frowned upon exactly exactly that's right so what i'm doing here is i'm just centering on clay and you've got to make sure the bullet play is central to what you're doing otherwise you end up from what we've got now we're doing our second movement of making the base so as you can see there are just push my fingers down and make the base why do I know this is so much more difficult than you're making it I mean I like to make it look like it's nice and easy so there we go we've made the basics the correct thickness so from there is a case of forces from the outside to the inside to putting the claim up in opposition and now that it's nice and even that section there now it's a case of just thinning the sidewalls out I'm making the start of your pot and it's just a case of letting the coast like between your fingers and making it to the desired shape and then from there now you've got your cylinder and everything is in check we start pushing from the inside out to define your shape and then let go of the pressure on the inside and make the pressure on the outside and then using this little tool here we just take the edges away and this is just the shape definer so this is just defining the show that you've done taking away the slurry so it doesn't have too much water on it otherwise it will crack I can't believe you've done that in three minutes two minutes I think people's lives perfect it is a mess for years or what they have amazing absolutely amazing I'd add gobsmacked and often I go quiet is it so oh yes obviously I need to make a complete mess of this poor thing I should give it a go and a whole new meaning to throwing a pot okay before I make my own fault I want to see what inspiration I can get from the rest of the pottery so I met with manager Chris greenaway who helped explain the difference between a and Johnny so Chris this is the help this is the hub this is where it all works where all the machines that make some of the shapes we have ran presses Jai Kisan jollies sorry can't see tickets to essentially yes that's the normal method of making pots part the man plant a mold 1 parser one pass the Jolly we're actually got its name from I'm not a hundred percent sure but it up like that it is a process that's long way back and we still use it today that's what I think it's nice because what inspires me that is that traditional crafts are still thriving how much can you keep the old mechanism that day well there are still be the need for traditional methods which is making by hand as well as the machines and we do have high street customers food still require traditional made pot so in the way the commercial side the restaurants and that it pays maybe for your the handcrafted of all artistic side it's definitely supports that we've got people were wanting something 100 sent made in Britain is made in Britain my favorite yes once the pots and plates have been made they get passed on to Claire and Robin who hand paint and decorate them just like icing cake these are limited editions aren't they yeah so people collect them yes I think it's wonderful you seem to be paid users black dots yes that's the wax so that would come through on the finest I see what happens to it good this will go into the kiln out like that I'll go through w so yep they're finished they're going to kill and then I think it takes a bad day they'll come out I don't go around the world I think so but of course my visit wouldn't be complete without me having a go at throwing a pot lucky i'm back with top thrower feel well this is where they say please don't try this at home I haven't done this since my disastrous pottery lessons at school I'm ready I'm talked up you look lovely right then right so old it over to you damn okay so on you jump just log it in on the horse just realized I've got the wrong thing on here every other time i've walked racks that's attack bigger so you're comfortable this is this okay so down or your right hand side you have a foot pedal because you down like a car accelerator so first things first we need to get hands consequence if you could to get here is Morse away from notice you sent up the pot for oh yes i did want to be too mean so now you've got a good start and we're going to make a nice big pot that's nice and even but it's not going to flick off put your father better let me get the wheel go around slowly fire stuff ok now when you want to concentrate leaving on the illness on the trade there ok now you want to put your thumbs in the middle can you pop the phones in the middle that's lovely and we want to push down now you don't want to go right to the bottom otherwise you'll end up with a hole in your pot I get a bit slow no that's absolutely fine so you want to pull your thumbs apart and I should put your thumb to par yet logo then slow the wheel down that's it that's right i think i need more water that's the touchable water in four games back as i said oh thank you i forget to keep going then keep putting those thumbs haha yeah that's right leaning on the truck sleep that thumbs in the same place yes leaving if that has any clothes so that'll do you you've opened it up enough so what do you want to do now is there we need to actually start making the pot ah ok so from there we get our hands not somewhere in and what not to do pleasure and back in the position they were ok now concentrating more with your right hand than your left and let the clay slide between your fingers you want to squeeze and as you squeeze you feel that the clay will start moving and you want to end up bringing your hands up with it I can't believe how easy Phil made this look what slicing ghost oh yeah it's a better now put your left hand on the inside left hand on the episode of the verizon sore but that asset and now you what you want to do is just as you want to just sleep it or pushing from the inside out or the outside in with no squeezing involved push that's it just push your fingers out that's it now take your fingers away and now if you want to just fold the top out into a little lid or just placing your fingers at the top I'm just turning your hands over so you this is folding the edge oh oh hang on not going to let this go this is big this is a bit different does happen it again more of you are the new left is for therapeutic translation dozin yes it's annoying it's going to unlost me I've lost me and I lost big I'll just help you out milf it just by turning the edge over to see so just probably belong there well it's it's rustic is the word very very different it is closer it has a one-off differently thank you very much that's my lesson down I don't think my pot will make it into the kiln let alone the shut up
