Please explain how to: rosin the violin bow & how often.

subscribe hi everybody and welcome my name is Alison the UH no piano and the online violin tutor now today is a tutorial on how to rise in the bow and why I'm not getting any sound out of the bow on the violin so um I will talk about today how much to put rosin on the bow I'll demonstrate that I'll just have a quick I'll just show you quickly as some reasons I've got some raisins down here that I can show you how to rosin the bow how often to Roz in the Barry Blue River and all that kind of stuff so some of you specifically have been putting comments underneath the video saying that you're not getting any sound whatsoever at the violin now when you buy a brand-new violin they will not provide rosin on the bow they would provide rosin in the case for you but they will not have any rosin on the bow so I don't have a brand new bow to hand actually so I can't show you what that's going to be that the well that's what that's going to sound like but I can only say that when you do start to put the bow on the violin it is a brand new violin and there's no rosin you haven't put anything on you will not get a single sound out with the violin at all the bow will just slide across the sound so the bow will just slide across the violin silently and you will not get a sound out of the violin at all so the reason why you're not getting anything out of your violin especially if it's a brand-new violin with a brand new bow is because you need to put some rosin on the bow in order to make a sound so that's probably our number one reason why you're not getting any sound whatsoever now moving on to rosin I've got three different types of rosin here I've just got the kind of cheap sort of bog-standard rosin that the kind of students get in the violin case so it's this one here I've got some / Astra gold flecks filings so it's got like bits of gold in it whatever and this this is a red one it's these two a nice quality ones I think this was um I don't know seven eight pounds something like that and this is really similar which does not sound like a lot of money in context but for some rosin this is really expensive for rosin however rosin will probably you are very long time a good number of years at least anyway because you just used very little of at a time so these are very good quality Rosen's if you've got if you've got a nice expensive bow nice set of strings on your violin you've got a nice violin it will make a difference I never put this on on my bow because I don't want it going on my strings I've paid a lot of money for my violin a lot of money for my strings a lot of money for my bow so I really kind of don't want to sully it by putting some some cheap rosin on but if you've got a beginner kit then this is fine you can use this as well it won't make a huge amount of difference because you've got a cheaper kind of student equality violin but it doesn't hurt to put this on it might it might improve the sound a little bit but probably not enough that you know that if you if you did a blind test with it on you'd notice any difference so these are three different types of rosin you can get this sort of rosin for about a pound but it but it all works the same so this is my gold flex / astro rosin and when you do get a bit of rosin it's obviously this this one's been used now but what you probably should do is maybe get a knight nail file or a piece of sandpaper and just sort of rub it along along the top to kind of score it so you kind of break the surface if you like so you can start to sort of put it on your bow and things you can but you must be careful you can kind of rub it on a brick wall outside but just be very careful if a too heavy-handed then you end up kind of you know ruining all the rosin but I mean that's kind of a last resort if you don't have a nail file or any sandpaper or anything like that to hand you can score it as well I've heard of people doing that but I mean I've always I've always got no nail file that's why I'm sure you can find some with a nail file I just kind of you know with the width or one of the sides of the file just kind of go over it just see break the soft sorry so you break the shiny surface of it so it works a bit better but don't drop the rosin especially gonna drop it on concrete otherwise you'll smash it into a thousand pieces and you won't be able to use it the rosin really should be whole like this so I was in my bow I don't know maybe maybe once a week something like that for me I'm I teach full-time so I don't get an awful lot of playing done and I certainly don't get as much playing practice in during the day as I would like to and simply because I'm a teacher all time and I do other things and you know performances and stuff so I don't I don't get a lot of time to do an awful lot of practicing but if I was practicing for maybe two three four hours a day I'd probably I probably was in my boat every other day I guess some people might say that they rose in their bow every two hours they play or they rose in their bow every time this and every time that well it's everybody's going to have a different answer this is just what I do it doesn't hurt when you rosin it you're not going to do any damage you just don't want to over rosin the bow you'll know when you've over rose in the bay because you'll get a lot of your get another fall out on the actual wood and you'll get a lot of fall out on your violin and all over your strings and all under your strings and it will just look like a sheet of white snow sitting near the bridge on the violin so that's when you know you've put too much rosin on the bow and therefore you probably don't need to rosin it for quite a while if you do get lots of build-up and dust on your violin then then you need to wipe it off quite quickly quickly otherwise it can it can damage the violin and it goes sticking it's not very nice so just get a plain cloth nothing on it and just just wipe it off so the only danger of the only damage you can do with rose and I guess it's just over Rosling it so it could just be a trial and everything for you now when I was in my bow because because I've already got a good sheet of rosin on and I might just want to put a little bit more on I'm not actually going to put tema I'm going to show you what I'm going to do but I'm not going to actually press the rosin dang so I've already put some rosin on my bow and I don't want to over rosin for you but what you do need to do is I would probably just do a couple of swipes just up and down the bow I don't know maybe half a dozen something like that and then what you need to do is give a good good kind of swipe at the bottom here another boss running you need to go right to the very end there a lot of I see a lot of students where the rosin is about only going down to here but what about all this part here you know you are going to use that when you need to use a full bow and there's no point rolling up to this here because when you get down there you don't get any sound out of it so make sure that you don't neglect this this part here right near the Frog so go right up until don't kind of push teeth by the way you'll damage the rotten butt right up to the Frog and right up to the point as well until until it won't go anymore so you probably need to give the bottom bit a good a good little swipe and then I give the top bit a good swipe and then I just do up and down maybe once two three more times and that's it so I've kind of done it in 30 seconds but that's because I'm constantly maintaining the the amount of rosin I put on my bow and I'm always putting rising on my bone every kind of once a week every fortnight depending on how much I've played it to be honest and but for students I end up putting a lot more on because they don't obviously rolls in their bow or what's something they forget to do that sort of thing if you are a beginner in your playing every day I've probably still only say I don't know once a week maybe a little bit more but again it all depends on how much you practice how much you're playing the violin how much rosin you do put on when you do put the rosin on so really kind of how long is a piece of string and like I said some of you are going to say oh I put more rosin on the net I put less rosin on than that well again that just depends on what you do there's no point me saying to do you guys out there the you know well you've got to put rosin on every single day because if you're not playing the violin you know only once or twice a week you're not playing it every day then putting it on every day is is a bit silly or putting it on every time you play and you're already playing for 10 minutes or 20 minutes that's too much you're going to be putting on too much rosin so it's a trial and error you will know when you haven't got enough rosin because the bow will start to slip across the violin and especially when you get to the bottoms there a good telltale sign the bottom at the top they're a good telltale sign that you're running out of rosin as well avoid touching the hair with your fingers because even if your hands are clean they do contain oils moisture and grease and every time you're putting that on the hair its gobbling up all the oils and grease and you know it's creating kind of barriers and film so it stopped the rosin kind of going on the hairs properly just imagine mixing oil and water it just doesn't work it's not going to happen and that's what you're doing so if you notice oh I never touch the hair on my violin I always sorry the hair on the on the boat I always avoid it because I don't want to put my greasy kind of oily hands all over the the hair of the violin as well so I hope that answers questions if you've got any more questions leave some comments in the box underneath I'm sure either myself I'm getting kind of really busy with comments now so if I don't if I don't reply to you I do apologize in advance I just have a lot of comments going through so obviously I can't answer them all but maybe one of you guys out there will be kind enough to to reply and help you know help each other out there that would be a really good idea if I'm not always there to help you so I hope that answers the question on how to rosin your bow how often to rosin your bow and why you might not be getting a sound on your bow so thanks for three months for watching and I'll catch y'all next time subscribe
