hello home talk I am Paula Blankenship and I'm the creative director with heirloom traditions paint and I'm here today to talk to you about redoing some damaged things that you may have in your home using a simple technique and the Heritage Collection no wax no prime paint products this great paint product will allow you to do so many awesome things without going to the trouble of sanding and removing paint and so on but it also will allow you to do something like this what we're getting ready to show you here this is a laminate conference table as you can see that has quite a bit of damage on it and looking a little bit poorly but rather than throwing it away we're going to show you something really cool to use we're going to make this appear to be a marble looking stone tabletop it also has a lot of damage and a lot of the edge has been torn off similar to what you might see damaged on the countertop the first thing you want to do using the heritage products always is protect your hands and gloves with a pair of gloves any kind you have will work surgical gloves whatever gardening gloves just make sure you don't get it on your nails it doesn't come off very easily and also give the paint a stir I am using Cathedral and it's a dark gray a gorgeous color and what I want to do is show you using actually a gift tissue paper what we're going to do and how we're going to camouflage the damage on the table as well as give it a great look I've already done an area earlier to show you how we're going to fo this and give you a great look if you're on and join us please tell us where you're from chime in with me ask questions melissa is here Craig is on the camera we can answer any questions that you have live give us a thumbs up and tell us if you're liking what we're doing here and also what you do have a giveaway during this live so stay with us and we'll ask that question then you can start posting your answer to see if you're going to be the winner tonight so stay with me so first thing you want to do is just apply the paint liberally to the area that you want to get started I'm going to actually put this tissue all over the entire top and the edge of this table so I you don't do anything special to it just give it some paint you can see I've not covered the entire area that this is going to lay down on you just put this paper right into the wet paint and then what you do is you your brush and just paint over that there's wet-on-wet is what you're doing now I haven't got the whole area covered in paint obviously I want to make sure where my paper is going down then I get paint under it and on top of it so making it really easy now people are going to ask the first questions can you do this on countertops you can you can do it on tables countertops anything that you want to add this great visual texture to and when you see what we're going to do down here with a couple of other colors we're gonna make this really look like a faux stone it's gonna look just like marble when we're done with this table so we've been in the process of moving and this was a table that was left in the conference room here and of course everybody was ready to throw it away and we decided that we weren't going to do that that we were going to use this and make a great table out of it so I think you're gonna love what we do with this room once we're done so here we go got this piece on and can you see that hopefully the camera will show you exactly what's going on here so all that paper begins to lay down when you get a little air bubble just keep on pushing down with your brush and just gently push the paint and that will bubble we'll just lay right down any of the excess over the edges just allow it to kind of move on over the edge if you have a spot that maybe you don't have paper on or something where you've torn the paper you can just give it a little tear the width will just pull right away once this is all dry on the edge you can take a piece of sandpaper and just lightly hit it and that will just peel right away super easy to do if you've done decoupage before it's very similar to that except we're trying to create bubbles we're trying to create this texture so the wet go right ahead ask away yes absolutely I am doing a wet-on-wet technique and I am showing you how I'm gonna move over here so I can get to get a better camera angle and see exactly what we're doing here I am camouflaging and hiding the defects as well as adding a nice look to this tabletop simply by using the Heritage Collection paint products I'm using a color called Cathedral which is a beautiful dark gray I'm allowing and placing a good liberal coat of paint down onto the table and then what I'm going to do is lay this piece of tissue right into the wet paint so it's acting as my bonding agent as well as the top coat and the heritage paint products do not require require a top coat over them nor do they require a primer so this paper bonds right to this wet tissue and now the question I asked earlier is would you want to use this on a countertop yes you can you can use it on a countertop you can use it to any place that you have maybe detail that you don't like in a bedroom or in a bedroom so you could lay this right over it you can put it over a peeling veneer any anything that you want to hide and cover you can do that really easily using this technique so it's just going to give us kind of a veining look once it's dry and all settle down the air bubbles kind of lay down you'll have some air bubbles that pop up just keep on using your brush if you have one you don't like you can just touch it with your brush tip and just kind of knock a little hole in the paper if you get a tear in your paper you can just lay over another piece right on top of it you can see I'm doing pretty normal brush strokes right over the paper and it's strong enough that it's not tearing the paper so you got some working time before the paper begins to get too soft now you definitely want to get paint under and on top of the paper you can just do an area where you can see exactly where you're going and just lay it down as you go and you cannot see where the pieces overlap each other they just hide each other beautifully and I'm going to show you that right here we're going to move down now that we've got two pieces laid down and you can see how quick this is going to go again ask questions and tell us where you're from melissa is here on the computer she's trying to answer some questions if you have any please ask sure absolutely go ahead one layer just the thinnest of gift wrap paper the thin thin stuff that's all you need just one simple layer it's not about doing anything other than just creating this fine little texture and hiding the actual pieces of the laminate that have peeled away here so once you've got that on again don't worry about the edge just get it on there and then you can come back with a little sandpaper after it's good and dry and already hardened up just sand it just knocks it right off you can actually peel it away with your hand while it's wet but sometimes you may damage it so just wait till it's dry take the sandpaper just a sanding block and just go right under the knee underneath and it will take it right away so now move on down and I want to show you a couple of great ways that we can finish this off I did some earlier here today and I want to show you some of the things that we can do and create some great texture on something that's already dry I did want to show you the great colors that the heritage paint collection is available in this is our all-in-one paint product it doesn't require a topcoat it doesn't require priming and doesn't require sanding of your old paint products away it's self leveling and dries to a beautiful low luster velvet Sheen so it's available in all of these gorgeous twelve colors as well as a fantastic product that we offer called the antiquing gel so if you wanted to add that other depth or that dimension to your project the antiquing gel does that beautifully you wipe it on you wipe it off so it's such an easy thing to do you can go in and redo your entire kitchen or your furniture projects in just a flash simply by using the paint and putting on the glaze to give you that great French Country look at your PIN look or just that cottage an antique look that you're after you can distress the product and you can give it all those great looks that you see without half of the work generally associated with a top top paint so I want to move over here and show you we've poured out a couple of colors we're using the true applicator of course you can do it with any applicator you can do it with a simple brush but I wanted to just show you this I did earlier today and this is good and dry let my camera get over here so you can see what it looks like this piece is already Drive did this a few hours ago you can do something else here you can actually go in and take a sander and sand back any of this on top I don't really want to do that it would add a lot more grain and bring all this and whiten this up if you wanted to do that but I'm going to do mine with other paint colors and what I want to do is now poured out Kashmir this is also from the Heritage Collection and this is our color called iron gate which is black I'm just going to dip my little applicator right into the paint you just want to rub it on all right I already had some white in my applicator so what I want to do is add this marbleized texture I just want to double dip here just do a little of both you need to be the one if you start this to finish it because if you start off and then you let someone else do the other side they'll never match I don't know if you've ever done any faux painting and your day but you need to kind of be the one who does it start to finish because everybody paints a little differently now you can take a rag and you can wipe this back and get any kind of a look that you want you can make it dark and light or highs and lows you can it's kind of up to you whatever look you're after but you can get a quick marble look what do you think of that if you like the looks of that you look like marble I use the texture of my rag to go back just using a terry cloth rag and just kind of DAB dab it and pull it away and lift and add these spots and these dots that all adds to the stone look just kind of pounce your rag and let it pick up and remove if you think an area is too light you can just go in and touch it with some more of the black touch it with any thing you want to do just kind of redeposit the paint and then move it around move it around to get the lows and the highs any way you want it to look you don't have to totally rub it out you can do anything you want now this is ready to go you can choose to topcoat this over because this is a conference table like a countertop you might want to put a polyurethane on top but on standard furniture pieces it's not necessary you're going to get good durability this paint hardens and cures are very very hard and very very strong so it's not necessary but again in wet areas or something that's going to get a lot of high traffic you can choose to put on that top coat if you like but if you don't it's perfect as it any questions you have Melissa all right great this is a laminate table we are working on a true lemon and you can see this is a plastic piece here totally plastic so yes works on laminate great I did not do any sanding and you wouldn't have to do any sanding this paint bonds and sticks to literally anything so I am also going to do a little technique here just kind of dry brush just to show you what you could get just laying my brush on a 45 degree angle just kind of giving it a little look here and then I'm gonna go back and I'm gonna remove that I just wanted to do that just to softly add a little more white again just being creative up to you and we have a giveaway we want to announce that real quick and get you guys entered is entered into our giveaway this afternoon ask that question and the question is what would you fix in your own home using this technique using the tissue paper if you have a great idea please post that because we are going to choose a winner here and announce it here live with you and what are we get it what are we giving away Mel a quart of the color of your choice of the all-in-one paint products so I just want to show you quickly just by me laying my brush coat here see how it's hitting the veins of this table just pull down closer if you can so you see how that's picking that up now I'm just moving any direction that here's what paper does and beautiful just continue on giving it that little dry brush showing up now so can you believe that that was this Formica table gonna look just like a piece of stone when we're done so I created the base using the black and the white over Cathedral and then we're going back and adding that final layer of a finish using our just a dry brush technique and just doing a soft little flat brush to pick up on all those highlights just to create that faux stone look and if you get something that you think looks harsh you can always just go back and touch it and move it continue on doing that all right be sure to answer the question what would you do in your home using the tissue technique again we applied tissue wet-on-wet to this tabletop this is a Formica conference table and this gave us this great look in just minutes one coat of paint we laid down and then we put a coat over the paper once we laid it down and that's what we got simply by doing that so quick so fast so easy and looks great I want to go back and put on another piece if you're joining us late I will we are using a wet on wet technique and we're using the heritage paint products from heirloom traditions these are our all-in-one paints that don't require priming they don't require stripping or sanding away the old finish we are working on an ultra slick piece of laminate on an old damaged conference table we've recently moved into our new location we are trying to get ourselves together here today and the rest of this week but this was one of the pieces that we decided that we wanted to keep because it was a great table it just had a lot of cosmetic blemishes and the edge was peeling off and so on so we decided that we were going to give the show this little table some love so here's what we're doing we're just applying our first layer of Cathedral which is our beautiful gray color and along the countertop it earth along the edge of this table all of the it was peeling away so what I want to do is just literally lay this piece of paper just a plain piece of gift-wrapped tissue wet right into wet now you can buy tissue anywhere this came from the dollar store you don't have to worry about getting it flat and smooth the whole point is that you want it to wrinkle just let as flat as you can load up your brush again and start flattening it out it's going to make its own lines there's no way that you can get it flat so that's the whole beauty of it you don't want it to be flat you also won't see where the two pieces blend where you just overlap the other piece you will not see that yes you do overlap it but you don't have to worry that you'll see that and the line totally disappears among all the lines that you're creating you don't even see that at all so just continue right on and you can see this table I'm gonna literally put down five probably ten pieces of this paper which are taking me a couple of minutes each I could have probably changed this whole table and even faux finish it even giving it the stone look and probably an hour project before we're done so pretty pretty awesome flip for this little table here so if you get a bubble like I'm getting right here I'll just go in here and just kind of Pierce the paper with my brush just pop the just basically give it a little air hold release and just kind of gently push the air away you can just kind of smack it stipple it just whatever you need to do to get the paint to lay down now this when it dries it does shrink down so a lot of the areas that you have that stick up a little bit they will begin to lay down as they start to dry too because if you feel like you want to just smash them on down you can do that too just don't if you make a hole in it it's easy to repair you just take some of the tissue just lay right over it or actually it doesn't even show when you do make a hole in it because I've made one down here earlier and it didn't even show so it does once it got painted it looks just like the rest of the table same Sheen so again these products are just so easy to work where they don't require any topcoat I am probably going to put a top coat on this because this is our work table we'll be here writing and using it I'm sure drinks will be left and set here so definitely going to add something on top of it because it is a hard-wearing surface here on cabinets on furniture pieces there's no need to do an additional top coat this again something you're going to use for wet areas if you wanted to put this on your kitchen countertops you can certainly do that but I would put a polyurethane coat over the top of that because it would be exposed to wet areas all the time so just so you know but it is a great technique and it works with any paint products it's just some super easy to use it with the heritage paint products you don't need that top coat and you don't need that primer and you don't need to do anything additional to this table to get ready to go so I'm going to go ahead and finish up uh-huh well Debbie uh you wouldn't have to do anything but if you don't want that to show just get you some wood filler and do you know a decent job at filling it once you put the wood filler in there take a credit card and just smooth it away since you're not worrying about the actual look of it just pull it away make it smooth and flat and once you lay this over the top it will never be detected so here's our last piece on this side so you can see what this little guy is going to do pretty much got me right where it needed to be and that's going to finish up this whole edge now be sure and answer the question what would you do in your home using this technique we are giving away a quart of the all-in-one paint products and the color of your choice so we're picking a winner here tonight so post please what you would do and aha yes we do we have a great promotion we didn't do one through Labor Day as we were busy laboring I've find that funny we the time if you're interested in trying the paint products and go over there you get yourself a great savings right now any other questions you have for me Melissa can you use this on countertops yeah I'm sure this would make a great treatment for a wall oh my goodness yes this would be beautiful it looks like leather actually so when you put it up there well there's so many beautiful colors and the Heritage products but once you put that antiquing gel over it you just get such a great look and such a dimensional look now I did it with colors of paint here because I wanted mine to be more dramatic the antiquing gel already is a grayish color so I wasn't going to give me the highs and lows that I wanted to mimic stone but when you put it on in on a wall and you want it to have that leathery look you can sure get that using this product so I've got a hole in my paper here I'm going to show you a quick fix for that wouldn't have to fix it but I notice it so I'm going to think someone else is gonna notice it I'm just gonna tear me a scrap of paper I already have it wet here I'm just gonna lay that right in there and again we're just doing wet on wet no other adhesives hear nothing else bonding it so you can't even see that I've got a spot here in the front go ahead and patch that you can see anyone can be this it's actually very fun yep let that dry girls let it come to a total until it's completely dry no wet at all make sure maybe even tomorrow just take a little block of sandpaper little sanding block just hit it right there and it will just peel right away and it won't damage the edge if you do it when it's a little wet or where it could possibly have a wet spot you may rip your paper and you have to go back and do a little repair so best just to wait and let it harden up let the paint dry really well and then remove it so this is such an easy technique there again if you want to fix things with busted veneer or antiques that are damaged and you can't figure out something to do with them without spending a ton of time this is an awesome awesome technique that will give you a great look very very fast so have you got a winner have you found a winner
