Please explain how to cut glass with water! - make shot glasses / glass cups!

g'day everyone check out this awesome way to turn your old glass bottles into cups or shot glasses okay so step one what we need to do is somehow cut the glass this can be done by getting a five dollar glass score and scratching a nice straight line around the bottle this is where you want the glass bottle to be split so once you've scored a nice semi straight line around your bottle we can go on to the next step now hopefully the small scoring and scratching that we've done the bottle will be enough so the bottle will hopefully follow this line of weakness when it's stressed so the process of how we actually cut the glass is through using thermal shock by quickly changing the temperature of the glass from hot to cold the glass then becomes stressed and will hopefully break so how this works by thermal shock is to rapidly change the temperature of the glass as fast as possible so you can do this a few different ways the first way is using acetone and a bit of string you need some nice cold water so get a nice bucket fill it up with any cold ice boxes you can find anything will do even some rank old juice that's been sitting in the freezer for five years should do nicely cool that water down to break the bottle you can use a bit of string soaked in acetone wrapped around the bottle and set this on fire to bring up the temperature of that specific area on the bottle and then dump it in the ice so we're going to have to go this way first even though you can't quite see it it is actually burning oh grab your bottle and dump it into the icy hot water if it isn't already broken give it a slight tap with something heavy and there you go we've managed to cut glass with fire and water an alternative method to using the string and acetone is to just use boiling hot water but we've got to keep the hot water just on this particular area so we induce the fracture in that particular zone only there's a pretty easy way to do this by just using blue tack just roll some long sausages in your hand and wrap them around tightly making sure that they're high enough so the water won't flow over them and here's a little extra tip and when you're cutting you might want to use a permanent marker like this one just so you've got a nice defined line to cut across especially with those areas where there isn't any labels or other lines to follow that way you don't end up with a bottle like this one oops and you're not just limited to round bottles all different shapes and sizes can work wow oh my gosh that was frightening she blew up the depth charge oh my gosh it was actually scary hopefully caught the sound of that i wonder what caused that size the air must have expanded a whole heap because the lid was on probably a good tip is to take the lid off when you do this in case it explodes in your hand like it almost did for me well there you go time to fish out the other bit and there we have it three cut glass bottles i think this one turned out the best which is lucky because it's the best looking glass as well that nice blue very very almost perfectly round this one helps with the water this one wasn't too bad it didn't quite turn out as well as the other ones unfortunately there's a small crack in that one this one turned out alright but look how thick that glass is it worked out pretty well but i think if i poured the water a bit better or stuck my blue tack on a bit better it would have succeeded some more we wouldn't have had this big lost bit here it would have turned out quite nicely because look how flat this one is the boiling water method is definitely better than using string and acetone or other flammable liquids now we've got to do something about this sharp lip that's around the glass it's a really coarse-grained sandpaper will do the trick then you can have a go with some more finer sandpaper to refine it even more remember to be very careful when sanding glass not to breathe it in unless you want to die or to touch the rim of the glasses it may still have little bits of sharp glass in it and there we have it we've made our own awesome homemade glass cup we could even use for a vase and it was actually pretty damn easy although i could have sanded the lip a little more it still looks really good if you like this video consider subscribing i'd really appreciate it or check out these other videos thanks for watching see ya
