Please explain how to install bead board wainscoting & chair rail.

got a really cool project we got a living room here we got two walls right here we're gonna be installing some real wood hemlock bead board and some mdf chair railing so stay tuned for this video we're gonna show you the simple process of installing it that you can do it yourself and then we're gonna be painting it at the end and i'm gonna show you the process of painting the real wood hemlock and the mdf um chair rail so here we go stay tuned so we're gonna begin installing our chair rail and b board now and the standard height typically is 32 inches of chair rail or it's actually one third the height of your ceiling so if you've got eight foot ceilings that would mean it would be 32 inches but we have a window here but we've got to incorporate a natural look to this and how the it's actually trimmed out it's going to be best to set it on top of this window sill ledge right here and run it right out there so we're going to run it right off this window sill level it and begin the process right there so typically a fast and easy way if you have a window like this to actually work with if you're just going to measure on your wall if your chair rail height stays going to be 36 inches that's approximately what ours is going to be what we would be installing it you're going to measure up on here 36 inches then you would measure another mark down the wall 36 inches and then take a chalk line and snap a chalk line or which some that's really simple is actually just to get a laser level you'll set your laser level out here and it's going to shoot a laser sight out and put a line on your wall very convenient easy to do you can pick those things up for about eighty dollars but um a chalk line is you know about four or five dollars that you can actually just snap a line with which is really easy we're not going to be using either one of them because we're just working off the height of this window sill on both ends and we're just going to be leveling using a level off those both ends so here we go so a few of the simple tools that you're actually going to need to actually complete this process you'll need a level we just got ourselves a 12 12 inch level gonna need a tape measure we've got a speed square to make sure we're getting straight cuts when we draw our cuts on our lumber and then you're gonna need a miter saw to actually make all your cuts and then to install it we're gonna be using a brad nailer nailer gun and then an air compressor so our starting point on these two walls is going to be right here this is going to be our first piece of chair rail we've got now we're going to be taking this measurement right here from this window and then we're going to be making this cut and we're going to install this using a level right here and then we're going to work our way that direction so our first piece we're going to set this one on here and nail this one up we're just using our finished nailer we've got a 15 gauge two and i think about two inch two and a quarter inch finished nails on it it's also a good idea to wherever you're nailing your chair rail on to nail it to a stud so we're just going to use a stud finder to find those studs and we're going to mark those so we actually pin these things into studs now in this cut over here we've got this other end of the window we're coming to this wall we're going to be running down the opposite wall we've just made ourselves a 45 degree cut right here and then the next piece of trim is gonna butt right into there [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] so we're gonna start from this corner right here and we're gonna start installing our bead board working this direction right here and it's when you're installing the very first piece what you want to make sure is this piece is actually level you don't want to just butt it up to that corner because it might not be level so we're going to stick a level on here make sure that piece is running level vertically and then we'll start running our next pieces all the way down the wall so we got our two end pieces installed we're just gonna start running down that line now all we're gonna do is just measure the top of our baseboard to where our cut is and then we're just gonna start cutting them and working our way down the line we're just gonna use small little pins to just pin it right to the drywall now we're going to start just pinning all these things up we got all of our cuts done we're pinning them with 18 gauge two inch little brad pins so in order to actually work around this um all these curves right here we're just using a contoured gauge right here which is a very simple device to use these all these little pins will slide you push it up against there it gives you your contour whatever um the shape is and then you just draw that right on your cut for your cut so to make this contour cut that we're working around that windowsill i'm just gonna be using a battery operated skill saw [Applause] free [Applause] so so we have these wall outlets we're just working around with and we're just cutting them out with the jigsaw so i'm just taking some measurements we're measuring you know to the bottom of the outlet the top of the outlet and then over from the edge of the previous piece of bead board just taking that and marking that on our bead board and just cutting the hole right out and then this little box the screws that attach the electrical helmet you just loosen them up and that will just move out a little bit and then we'll just install our switch plate over the top of that so we got this side of the wall done now we're running this side of the wall and what we want to do is continue this on here and continue it level we want this chair rail to be level so we're just gonna use one of our boards right here which are completely straight we're just gonna and we're gonna line it up with the bottom of the chair rail there we'll set a level on it here and then we're gonna get this level right here and then that's lined up at the bottom of the chair rail and now we're just drawing a line right here on the bottom we're gonna draw a line right across here and then now we'll just remove this and that's the height we're gonna start cutting all of our pieces of board right here and install all these pieces of trim our chair rail will be installed along that line right there that we just drew and then we'll fill it in so we're going to take this piece and we're going to make sure it's vertically level because not all walls are perfectly square once it's perfectly level we'll go ahead shoot it in and then that'll give us a level start to work our way across the baseboard so i got this wall all done right here now we're finishing up this wall we had some of our trim that was delayed being delivered so i got it now so we can finish it up we actually just got as much as we can get done then we actually painted it because we had a party here but now we're gonna start the finishing process and we've got this one board right here you can see they come in eight foot lengths and it doesn't extend all the way to the end so we gotta do a splice here and we're gonna just cut a 45 degree angle splice two together glue them so we have a nice uh seam there so that looks good instead of just two straight cut flat ends a 45 degree cut is going to make it look not a lot nicer we're going to cap it in the in at the end because where it ends you just don't want to blunt in so we're going to cut a 45 degree angle on this and then add another piece to the end of it so it's capped off nicely we capped off our uh bead board at the end with 1x4 trim that actually matched the baseboard so it looks really nice how we finished it off first so we got to our our cuts made right here so we got a 45 degree angle right here we wanted our seam back here this is back where our couches are gonna be so it's gonna hide it a lot better versus if the seam was on the other end where it's open where people can see it and the cut was facing this direction so it's less likely somebody would see that cut so these two are gonna butt up against each other right there and that's gonna be our seam and then we got our end cut we'll show you over here but we're going to take and glue this together first we just use a rapid set glue right here that we're going to glue this two two ends together we're going to put it up here and nail it after that glue dries so we're just going to take fit our pieces together you can see how we got this this end we've created looks really cool it's going to look nice instead of trying to drive nails in there which could actually split our piece and break it we're just gonna glue it so like that over there here's a look at how we ended the end right there of our run of chair rail so now we've got it all masked off with our paper masker and we're going to shoot this section that we finally completed there you have it just installing some simple beadboard and chair railing it can be done very easily just with some simple tools we got this project done and it was about a day and a half to do it hope you've enjoyed this
