hi my name is Karen and I work for sir needs a polymer clay manufacturer based in Belgium distributed throughout the UK by clay ground in today's video I'm going to be showing you how to create a very simple flour cane okay let's make a flour cane we're going to be making a flower cane that looks like this one the word cane means a two-dimensional design inside a three-dimensional roll and this dough this design goes through all the way through from end to end so what I've started off with is a packet and a half of Cerne eat these will create the petals and what I've done to start with is I've cut the purser net into five equal parts and I rolled them into five sausages so I've done four so I'm just going to show you how to do the fifth one so I'll just put those to one side and I'm just going to roll the fifth petal just to show you how it's done so I'm just giving it a little roll and a press just making sure that there are no air bubbles in there if there are air bubbles in there then the clay does just break up so you just need to lots of little presses also pushing inwards that's a good good tip for getting rid of air bubbles and lots of little rolls so once you have your role there I'm going to make sure that it's the same size as the other roles that I've done so I'm just going to place them all together and I'm going to take the blade and I'm just going to trim the ends just so that I've got nice sharp clean ends there just check that they're all roughly the same size so now what we need to do is we'll get we need to wrap the petals like this one so we're going to wrap the roll and we're going to insert a piece of clay in the center to create the petal so just put that one to one side and what I've done is I've rolled through on the number five setting on the pasta machine some red clay and I'm going to wrap each one each white sausage in the red clay so just pop it on there and one end and then just rock forward and back and there should be a faint line along the clay and that gives you a good mmm a good guide if you like as to where to cut the clay it's not accurate but it's it just gives you a rough guide so it's got the clay and just but those two edges together again just lots of little rolls you don't want to do anything quickly because you will create air bubbles in the cane so it's all little movements when rolling and pressing the cane so I've got my role there and now I'm going to create this line down the center of the petal and what I'm going to do is I'm going to take the blade and I'm just going to take the blade and make a cut down the center but not all the way down the center just about halfway so then what we have is a gap there we have a gap there ready for me to insert a slither okay so I've taken a slither of clay there from the piece that I originally rolled out to wrap to wrap the roll so I'm just going to pop that just slot it inside and then I'm going to close the roll again even eat lots of little presses and then just wind it with the knife just trim off the ends there do be careful you don't want to be cutting yourself just remember as well when when you actually start the cane and you cut your white into five sections I've forgot to say just remember to condition the clay because the conditioning of the clay is important so there we have our first petal I've made the others ready so what we've got now is five petals already to arrange around the center of the flower so the center of the flower isn't is a yellow piece of clay that I've rolled into a sausage and I've got at the ends so the yellow piece is the same length and the same width as the petals so I'm going to start arranging the petals around the yellow center so just giving them a slide press not too much you don't want to press too much because we're going to insert some more clay in the gaps so we need those gaps to be there so there's your flour and now what we're going to do is fill in all these gaps around the flour so what I've started with is some red just squeezed into a ball and roll out into a thin sausage so there's lots of rolling and stretching and pinching if it was just to roll then you would create air bubbles in there and it would just break so it's lots of little rolls lots of pinching and lots of stretching so I need five of these again what I've got there is a sausage a thin sausage that I'm then going to press along the top to create a sort of pyramid shape if you think more if you think Toblerone then you've got the right shape there so pinched all the way along the top I'm just going to trim off the edges and what I'm going to do is we're going to insert each one into each Ridge on the flour so the pointed end goes sits nicely into the ridge like so just give it lots of little presses all the way around there just one more to go as you can see the flowers taking shape now so there we have your flower and there's just one last thing to do and that's to wrap the whole of the cane in sir more red I thought I've got it already prepared what - haven't so I'm just going to very quickly roll through the pasta machine just need to give it a little bit of a press there so I use the number number 5 setting on the pasta machine if you use in the pasta machine that is you can use a roller but you wouldn't get the same results using a roller as you would the pasta machine so so what I've done now is I've rolled a piece through the pasta machine and I'm just going to wrap the whole thing in a sheet of red clay and I'm going to squeeze all together so they have the cane with everything all in its place now what we need to do is just to bind it all together so I'm just giving it lots and lots of little squeezes little rolls there a little roll on the work surface pressing down quite hard as you can see the ends all go a little bit messy you think that you've lost the design by squeezing it together but once you take the knife and you cut the end off you'll see that actually the design is still there now I'm just going to show you very quickly how to reduce the cane to get it really small so I've just taken a small slice of the cane and I'm just quickly going to press in my fingers to reduce the cane down to a smaller size the smaller size then can be used for beads or buttons lots of things actually you cannot also put it onto glass wood metal so the game lots of little rolls there what suppressing lots of stretching and again the ends go messy and again you'll think that the design is gone what when we take our knife put into the cane and the flower is still there sometimes you will have to cut a little bit more bit more off to see that the flower is still there have it and as your flower game you
